As the holiday season winds down, many households face the question: what to do with the Christmas tree and holiday greenery? Instead of sending them to the landfill, consider recycling them! Repurposing your tree and greenery is an eco-friendly way to give them a second life while benefiting your garden, wildlife, or community.

Here are some practical and creative ways to recycle your Christmas tree and greenery:

1. Turn It in to Mulch Most natural Christmas trees can be chipped into mulch, which is excellent for garden beds and pathways. If you have access to a chipper, you can do this yourself. Otherwise, check with your local recycling center or municipal services—many communities offer free tree chipping programs.

2. Create Habitat for Wildlife Place your tree in your yard or garden to create shelter for birds and small animals during the winter months. You can even decorate it with birdseed ornaments, suet, or peanut butter-coated pinecones to provide food for wildlife.

3. Compost the Greenery Cut branches and greenery can be added to your compost pile or used as a base layer. The needles are rich in carbon and can help balance the compost's nitrogen content. Keep in mind that large branches should be trimmed down for easier decomposition.

4. Protect Your Plants Lay trimmed branches over perennial beds to help insulate them during the cold months. The branches can act as a natural mulch, protecting plants from harsh winter temperatures.

5. Check Local Recycling Programs Many communities have specific programs for tree and greenery recycling. Some cities collect trees curbside for recycling into mulch or erosion control products. Contact your local solid waste department or extension office for details.

6. Use It for Erosion Control In some areas, recycled Christmas trees are used for erosion control in wetlands or along riverbanks. These trees help stabilize soil and provide a natural barrier against erosion.

Don’t Burn It Indoors: Dry trees are highly flammable and can create a fire hazard. They also produce creosote, which can build up in your chimney.

Remove All Decorations: Before recycling, ensure all ornaments, tinsel, and lights are removed to prevent contamination.

Avoid Artificial Trees: Artificial trees cannot be recycled and should be reused or donated if in good condition.

We want to warn our community about a concerning scam circulating in our area. Scammers are spoofing the Junction City Police Department’s phone number and pretending to be a detective. Here’s how it works:

1️⃣ The scammer claims the victim has an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court or missing jury duty.

2️⃣ . They insist the victim is under a court-issued gag order, which forbids them from discussing the situation with anyone.

3️⃣ They demand immediate payment within 30 minutes to avoid arrest.

4️⃣ Victims are instructed to send money via Western Union, Money Zone, or by purchasing gift cards (e.g., Walmart, Dillons) and providing the codes over the phone.

5️⃣ Victims are told to wait 24 hours and bring a payment receipt to the police department to clear the warrant.

The Junction City Police Department will NEVER solicit money over the phone.

Hang up immediately if someone calls making these claims—it is a scam!

The Junction City High School varsity girls wrestling team placed 4th out of 12 teams at the Wichita North tournament on Friday. 

Five of nine girls placed in the top three. Znylah Slaughter and Elizabeth Edgerton-Diaz took 3rd.&nbsp; Placing 2nd was Jordis Serrano and the champions were Bre Villanueva and Jaidyn Alvarado.&nbsp; &nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward from AAA Kansas told Hutch Post that Perry Como had it right in his Christmas song, across the Sunflower State, the traffic will be terrific.

"It has been a boon this year in terms of all kinds of travel," Steward said. "We're going to continue that throughout the holidays ending the year. We're projecting about one point two to one point three million Kansans will be traveling 50 miles or more from their home during the holidays. We're talking about Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 is our holiday period. Almost 92% of travelers will be driving to their holiday destination."

That's well over a million Kansans that will be on the roads between now and the end of the year.

"Gas prices, as they've been all year, have been very moderate," Steward said. "We're looking at $2.68 a gallon on the average in Kansas right now. That's about thirty five cents less than the national average. That puts us fifth lowest in the country. So generally, if you're traveling in state or to our south and southeast, that's where you'll be seeing the lowest gas prices in the country."

There will be a few calls to the side of the road for AAA, but the estimate isn't too bad, given the volume of drivers.

"Last year during the holiday period, AAA Kansas Emergency Roadside Service crews responded to about 4000 calls throughout the state during that holiday travel period," Steward said. "We anticipate about the same. A lot of the same reasons we talk about, tires and batteries are among our top reasons for for getting calls from members, so make sure that you're getting your car checked out, make sure it's ready for the road trip, because, you know, we're always out there to help. We'd prefer that you not spend part of your holiday stuck on the side of the road. Get your car checked out before you hit the road, if at all possible."

The Kansas Department of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) will offer six regional Local Food Producer Workshops to assist farmers’ market vendors and managers, and for those wanting to sell food products directly to consumers, according to a media release from the agency.

Kansas farmers’ markets not only provide a fresh food source, but also stimulate the local economy. In 2024, more than 100 farmers’ markets were registered with KDA’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

“We strive to provide education to Kansas farmers’ markets and agricultural businesses to help them thrive,” said Sammy Gleason, KDA’s&nbsp;From the Land of Kansas&nbsp;manager. “These workshops will support local businesses by providing up-to-date food safety information and new marketing insights for direct consumers.”

Workshop topics will vary slightly by location. Highlighted topics include:

Calvin Pottberg, the chairman of the Greater Geary Community Foundation, highlighted this year's Match Day numbers at the city commission meeting on Tuesday night. Pottberg noted this was their 6th annual Match Day. 

The donations from the public were $443,467.22 plus $162,000.00 of matching funds. The total with the matching funds equaled $605,467.22  distributed to 57 local nonprofits. 

This compares to $389,363.25 of donations plus $154,516.50 of matching funds totaling $543,879.75 for 2023, going to 51 local nonprofits.&nbsp;

The local foundations that provided the matching funds were the R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation, Central Charities Foundation, Crosby Family &amp; Hoover-Koken Fund.

Pottberg and the Greater Geary Community Foundation thanked the city of Junction City for the use of the Municipal Auditorium, Josh Gray and his team from Parks &amp; Recreation for the set up of the auditorium, and  Mike Vacanti from the I.T. Department for the I.T. set up and use of the department’s laptops.

Match Day numbers were highlighted at the City Commission meeting

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.5% in November. This is an increase from 3.4% in October and an increase from 2.6% in November 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 7,900 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 7,100 over the month, while government increased by 800.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is down from 5.1 percent in October to 5 percent in November.&nbsp;The rate is also down in Riley, Wabaunsee, Pottatawomie and Dickinson counties.

“Total nonfarm job estimates for Kansas rebounded in November following a temporary drop last month. The fluctuations were partially due to the impacts of strike activity in October,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen.

“Over the last three months, Kansas has averaged 2,100 jobs added per month.”

Since November 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,100. This change is due to an increase of 14,100 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,000 government jobs.

The last 5 months allowed me to reconnect with friends, meet new ones, and create memories to cherish. I truly enjoyed working with the City Commission that take their roles thoughtfully and seriously; joining a team of dedicated and hardworking City Staff; and serving a warm, welcoming, and spirited Community.

On Tuesday evening, the Junction City High School boys basketball team visited residents at Valley View Senior Life. The Blue Jays spread holiday cheer by passing out hand-written cards, gifts, and candy. The team also sang Christmas carols to the residents.&nbsp;

Transportation to and from the school will be provided via bus. Children can ride the bus or be dropped off by their parents.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged phone scam.

Just before 11:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of theft&nbsp; in the 3300 block of Mercer Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 73-year-old woman reported an unknown subject called her posing as someone from her place of employment and had her purchase gift cards. 

Total loss associated with this report is $1,000. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Woman lost $1,000 in gift card scam

Mckenzie Heidrick wins the girls division of Hoop Shoot hitting 3 out of 7 free throws.

The finals of the girls competition in the 2024 Hoop Holler N’ Shoot free throw shooting contest were held during half time of Wednesday’s KSU women’s game.

Participants won their way into the finals via shoot offs conducted at Manhattan area elementary schools among 5th grade students. Over 550 students participated in the competition.

The winners and the schools they represent are as follows:

1st Mckenzie Heidrick, Oliver Brown – hitting 3 out of 7

2nd Jimena Chavez, Bergman – hitting 2 out of 7

3rd Colbie Peterson, Bluemont – hitting 1 out of 7*

Prizes awarded to all finalists included a plaque and a K-State coaches autographed Hoop Holler N’Shoot t-shirt.

This is the 26th Anniversary of Hoop Holler N’ Shoot, during that time over 15,000 5th graders have participated in the program.

Hoop Holler N’ Shoot is a free throw contest for 5th graders in the Manhattan area schools. A boy and girl champion is determined at each school. The grade school champions move on to semi-finals and finals at Kansas State University basketball games. 

Participating sponsors are Manhattan Optimist Club, KS StateBank, McDonalds, Manhattan-Ogden USD 383, Manhattan Parks and Recreation, K-State Bands, Q-Country 103.5, and Power Hits 97.5.

Girls Hoop Holler N' Shoot Contest Champion decided Wednesday night at KSU game

On Tuesday night at the Junction City Commission meeting, Addison Allen, a local Junction City girl, announced that she raised $1,000 and is donating it to the Junction City Animal Shelter.&nbsp;

In a social media post, the animal shelter publicly thanked Addison for her donation.&nbsp; "We are honored to acknowledge Addison for her remarkable hard work and commitment to our shelter. This is not the first time she has raised funds for us, but this time, she made it to $1,000!! Addison is a true inspiration to everyone, and we are thankful to have her in our corner."

It will also provide materials to renovate the police department breakroom and refresh the interior paint at the office.&nbsp;

-- Commissioners voted to approve the remodeling of Junction City Fire Station #2. ARPA funds will be used to cover the cost. The bid was awarded to Riley Construction for $103,662.&nbsp;

-- Commissioners voted 3-2 to approve using ARPA Funds to purchase new playground equipment at North Park, South Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, and Bramlage Park. The amount is $499,806.04. Mayor Pat Landes, Vice Mayor Ronna Larson, and Commissioner Jeff Underhill approved. Commissioners Al Gordon and Richard Pinaire did not approve.&nbsp;

Junction City Commissioners approve use of ARPA Funds

Several Students have provided Christmas Cheer during the holidays this year.&nbsp;

Vicki Bobbitt, the Executive Director of I.C.A.R.E,  said that on Dec. 16,&nbsp;225 Sheridan Elementary students visited Valley View Senior Life and sang Christmas Carols to residents. In addition, Mrs. Slaughter's first-grade class had fun coloring Christmas trees with residents.&nbsp;

Other highlights include Grandview&nbsp;Elementary STUCO &amp; honor students and Junction City/Fort Riley Homeschoolers serving approximately 75 older adults lunch at the annual Christmas Luncheon at the Geary County 4H Senior Center. Entertainment was done by the Junction City Community Choir.

There are 28 Pen Pal letter exchanges, along with approximately 150 Christmas Cards &amp; gifts from students at the HD Karns and Spring Valley Elementary School to older adults in the community.

 </figure>Several Students have provided Christmas Cheer during the holidays this year.&nbsp;Vicki Bobbitt, the Executive Director of I.C.A.R.E, said that on Dec. 16,&nbsp;225 Sheridan Elementary students visited Valley View Senior Life and sang Christmas Carols to residents. In addition, Mrs. Slaughter's first-grade class had fun coloring Christmas trees with residents.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Other highlights include Grandview&nbsp;Elementary STUCO &amp; honor students and Junction City/Fort Riley Homeschoolers serving approximately 75 older adults lunch at the annual Christmas Luncheon at the Geary County 4H Senior Center. Entertainment was done by the Junction City Community Choir.There are 28 Pen Pal letter exchanges, along with approximately 150 Christmas Cards &amp; gifts from students at the HD Karns and Spring Valley Elementary School to older adults in the community.

Winter Break Skates will be December 23rd and 26th from noon-4p.m. each day and January 2nd and 3rd from noon-4p.m. Admission is $7.00 per skater.

 On the December 23rd skate, they are hosting a special skate with Santa! Staff will be handing out candy canes, playing Christmas music and doing prize drawings every hour.
