The girls team placed fifth overall on Friday in Wichita, while the boys team closed competition in ninth place at Bowlero Northrock.

 Individually, senior Janiyah George placed 17th overall to lead the Lady Jays. Senior Jesse Holtcamp paced the boys' squad, wrapping-up competition in 23rd place out of 72 bowlers.

2025 St. Patty's Day Potato Bar

The funeral on Friday for SSG Louis Jordan has been cancelled.&nbsp;

SSG Jordan's sister has been found and will be taking him home to Dallas where he will be laid to rest.

Many thanks for the amazing outpouring of support everyone has shown for this veteran over the last several days.

A veteran with no known family will be laid to rest on Friday March 14 in the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery in Manhattan.  

According to a Facebook post, SSG Louis Jordan will be laid to rest in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Manhattan. Obituary information states that Jordan died at his home in Manhattan on Feb. 19.&nbsp;

Flags will be placed at 10:15 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. 

The Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery is located at 5181 Wildcat Creek Road in Manhattan.

Water main break forces closure of portion of 8th Street

&nbsp; Geary County Rural Fire was dispatched on Sunday around 6:00 p.m. to 2413 S. Milford lake Road for a structure fire. Three fire units and 2 supervisor vehicles responded. Junction City Fire/EMS sent a medical unit for standby. 

 The fire was contained to the hot water room located on the northwest corner of the residence.  Units were able to knock down the fire and prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the residence. The resident safely exited the structure prior to fire units arriving on scene. A dog and several cats were located inside the residence and they were all fine. 

Cause is being ruled accidental due to an electrical issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Terry Butler has filed for election to the Junction City Commission.&nbsp;

Geary County Clerk Courtney Gilbert announced the filing, which is the second in the city commission race. Sam Yoskowitz filed earlier.

Three seats on the commission are up for election. The filing deadline is at noon on June 2.

&nbsp;JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– The National Federation of State High School Association announced on Friday that Junction City High School USD 475 junior Jamarcus Tyson has been invited to serve on the NFHS National Student Advisory Council - NSAC.&nbsp;Tyson is one of only two students chosen from section 5 to represent on the advisory council in only the second group of NFHS members since January of 2024. In all, two students from each of the eight NFHS geographical regions were chosen for the NSAC, all of whom have exhibited outstanding leadership skills, achievements in academics and sports/activities, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

A total of 16 student leaders from across the nation, all juniors in classification and all involved in sports or performing arts activities in their respective schools, will be attending several meetings throughout the calendar year to provide the NFHS student perspectives on participation in high school sports and performing arts.

NFHS is the national leader and advocate for high school sports and performing arts and works with its 51-member state associations and 19,800 high schools to provide participation opportunities to the more than 12 million students involved in education-based activity programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged fraud and theft in Riley County.

Just after 8:30a.m. March 7, officers filed a report of fraud, theft, and criminal use of a financial card in the 1100 block of Garden Way, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

An 86-year-old man reported people entrusted with his accounts were using them to make fraudulent purposes. 

Total loss associated with the report is approximately $10,000 and dates back to at least August of 2024.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2025 Chevy Trax driven by&nbsp; William J.&nbsp;Bartunek, 19, Lincoln, Nebraska, was southbound on K113 at Top of the World Drive. The SUV drifted right onto the shoulder and struck a southbound bicycle driven by Eugene Thomas Rice, 54, Manhattan.

EMS transported Rice to Via Christi. Bartunek and a passenger in the SUV were not injured. Rice was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

The SCC consists of five elected commissioners;&nbsp;two appointed members representing the Kansas State University Agriculture Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service; and two appointed members representing the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Brayden Coffman of Milford, KS was traveling west in the 6900 Block of Old Milford Road, in his 2014 Chevrolet Cruze when he attempted a U-Turn. This caused Donovan Myers of Milford, KS who was also traveling west in his 2004 Dodge Dakota to run into Brayden. No injuries were reported, the two vehicles were removed by their owners and sustained functional damage.

Joshua Mercer of Junction City was driving his 2007 GMC Denali east bound when he fell asleep and the vehicle left the roadway to the south. It struck a fence, a large sign then the guardrail along Taylor Road and caught the grass on fire near the guardrail. The vehicle sustained major damage. Hurt was seen by Junction City EMS and declined to be transported for any injuries. The vehicle was towed by A Homestead Recker Service.

Deputies respond to accidents

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in January. This is unchanged from 3.8% in December and an increase from 3.1% in January 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas increased to 67.3% in January, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate in Riley County remains steady at 3.2 percent from 3.1 percent in December. The rate in Geary County fell from 5 to 4.7 percent last month. Wabaunsee County saw an increase from 2.7 in December to 4.5 percent in January.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 3,600 from December. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 2,600 over the month, while government decreased by 1,000. The largest job gains in the private sector were in trade, transportation, and utilities (+800 jobs) and manufacturing (+600 jobs). The largest decrease was in leisure and hospitality (-3,800 jobs).

Since January 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 7,800. This change is due to an increase of 7,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 600 government jobs.

DALLAS (AP) — Once again, most Americans will set their clocks forward by one hour this weekend,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/daylight-saving-time-spring-forward-sleep-health-5d7b96c3bc1ed243dd6e41b17ec8ee25">losing perhaps a bit of sleep</a>&nbsp;but gaining more glorious sunlight in the evenings as the days warm into summer.

How we came to move the clock forward in the spring, and then push it back in the fall, is a tale that spans over more than a century — one that’s driven by two world wars, mass confusion at times and a human desire to bask in the sun for a long as possible.

There’s been plenty of debate over the practice, but about 70 countries — about 40% of those across the globe — currently use what Americans call daylight saving time.

While springing the clocks forward “kind of jolts our system,” the extra daylight gets people outdoors, exercising and having fun, says Anne Buckle, web editor at timeanddate.com, which features information on time, time zones and astronomy.

“The really, really awesome advantage is the bright evenings, right?” she says. “It is actually having hours of daylight after you come home from work to spend time with your family or activities. And that is wonderful.”

Here are some things to know so you’ll be conversant about the practice of humans changing time:

In the 1890s, George Vernon Hudson, an astronomer and entomologist in New Zealand, proposed a time shift in the spring and fall to increase the daylight. And in the early 1900s, British homebuilder William Willett, troubled that people weren’t up enjoying the morning sunlight, made a similar push. But neither proposal gained enough traction to be implemented.

Germany began using daylight saving time during World War I with the thought that it would save energy. Other countries, including the United States, soon followed suit. During World War II, the U.S. once again instituted what was dubbed “war time” nationwide, this time year-round.

In the United States today, every state except Hawaii and Arizona observes daylight saving time. Around the world, Europe, much of Canada and part of Australia also implement it, while Russia and Asia don’t currently.

After World War II, a patchwork of timekeeping emerged across the United States, with some areas keeping daylight saving time and others ditching it.

“You might have one town has daylight saving time, the neighboring town might have daylight saving time but start it and end it on different dates and the third neighboring town might not have it at all,” says David Prerau, author of the book “Seize the Daylight: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time.”

At one point, if riders on a 35-mile (56-kilometer) bus ride from Steubenville, Ohio, to Moundsville, West Virginia, wanted their watches to be accurate, they’d need to change them seven times as they dipped in and out of daylight saving time, Prerau says.

So in 1966, the U.S. Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which say states can either implement daylight saving time or not, but it has to be statewide. The act also mandates the day that daylight saving time starts and ends across the country.

Confusion over the time change isn’t just something from the past. In the nation of Lebanon last spring, chaos ensued when the government announced a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-daylight-savings-time-9aee80838f6dfd53fd3564981f9667a8">last-minute decision</a>&nbsp;to delay the start of daylight saving time by a month — until the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Some institutions made the change and others refused as citizens tried to piece together their schedules. Within days, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-daylight-saving-time-a85575b650af7fcc419e3fdb1b2090e8">decision was reversed</a>.

“It really turned into a huge mess where nobody knew what time it was,” Buckle says.

What would it be like if we didn’t change the clocks?

Changing the clocks twice a year leads to a lot of grumbling, and pushes to either use standard time all year, or stick to daylight saving time all year often crop up.

During the 1970s energy crisis, the U.S. started doing daylight saving time all year long, and Americans didn’t like it. With the sun not rising in the winter in some areas till around 9 a.m. or even later, people were waking up in the dark, going to work in the dark and sending their children to school in the dark, Prerau says.

”It became very unpopular very quickly,” Prerau says.

And, he notes, using standard time all year would mean losing that extra hour of daylight for eight months in the evenings in the United States.

In 1908, the Canadian city of Thunder Bay — then the two cities of Fort William and Port Arthur — changed from the central time zone to the eastern time zone for the summer and fall after a citizen named John Hewitson argued that would afford an extra hour of daylight to enjoy the outdoors, says Michael deJong, curator/archivist at the Thunder Bay Museum.

The next year, though, Port Arthur stayed on eastern time, while Fort William changed back to central time in the fall, which, predictably, “led to all sorts of confusion,” deJong says.

Today, the city of Thunder Bay is on eastern time, and observes daylight saving time, giving the area, “just delightfully warm, long days to enjoy” in the summer, says Paul Pepe, tourism manager for Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission.

The city, located on Lake Superior, is far enough north that the sun sets at around 10 p.m. in the summer, Pepe says, and that helps make up for their cold dark winters. Residents, he says, tend to go on vacations in the winter and stay home in the summer: “I think for a lot of folks here, the long days, the warm summer temperatures, it’s a vacation in your backyard.”

Junction City and Washburn Rural met for the third time this season, and a trip to the 6A state tournament was on the line. Similar to the first two meetings, the game went down to the wire, with the Junior Blues holding on to win 54-49.

The first quarter featured Washburn Rural leading 9-4 early in the game. Junction City's defense locked in, and shots started falling with the Blue Jays going on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and leading 11-10 after one. 

In the second quarter, both teams settled in on the offensive end, with several lead changes. The Junior Blues led for most of the quarter and took a 23-21 halftime lead. 

Both teams began making shots in the third quarter, and it was the Blue Jays that led 37-31 after back-to-back three-pointers by seniors Jeremias Cruz, and Jackson Austin. Washburn Rural responded with their own run, going on a 10-4 run to end the quarter, and the game was tied at 41 heading into the fourth quarter. 

With eight minutes to go, and the season on the line, the Junior Blues edged ahead, leading by six, 49-43 with 4:35 to go in the game. Junction City responded again, cutting the deficit to two, at 49-47. With less than a minute to go, Rural led 52-49. After a missed free throw by the Junior Blues, JC had a chance. Head coach Nick Perez called a timeout with 14 seconds to go. The Blue Jays failed to execute the play and turned it over with seven seconds to go. The Junior Blues made their free throws and won 54-49. This is their third time beating Junction City this year. 

Junction City was led in scoring by senior Jackson Austin with 12 points, seniors Jeremias Cruz and Larkin Turner both added 10. Senior Ja'Twaan Williams scored nine points, and Lovell Autry, Brody Boeckman, Isaiah Handy, and Jayden Mears each added two points. 

The Blue Jays finished the year at 14-8. There were nine seniors on the team. 

For Washburn Rural, the Junior Blues will play in the 6A State Tournament next week in Wichita.

The 1st Infantry Division is hosting the "Year of the Warrior" kickoff event March 14, celebrating resilience, teamwork, and exceptional leadership within its ranks. The Big Red One’s “Year of the Warrior” is the annual campaign of 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley to recognize and honor the Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, their relentless pursuit of excellence, and their commitment to warfighting mastery.

According to a release from Fort Riley the day's activities will begin at 6:30 a.m. with a Division Run around Custer Hill, featuring an Apache flyover, followed by an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding participants. At 9:00 a.m., the celebration will continue with an exhilarating Warrior Competition at the Fort Riley obstacle course, where squads from each brigade will showcase their skills, determination, and camaraderie.

The morning will culminate in a Warrior Lunch at 11:30 a.m., honoring the competition winners with a ceremonial cake cutting featuring former 1st Infantry Division Soldier, retired Col. Greg Gadson, who served as a battalion commander in Iraq and lost both his legs in an IED attack in 2007.

The day's activities will conclude at 1:30 p.m. with a Division Leader Professional Development conversation on perseverance, led by Col. Gadson. Slyter, DSc, FACHE, a Kansas native and longtime healthcare executive, will be the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Stormont Vail Health. Most recently Slyter has been President and CEO of Dignity Health (DH) Arizona East Valley Market in the Greater Phoenix area.

Stormont Vail announces next CEO

Hays Municipal Court introduces its newest court clerk, a rising professional in law and order.

Megan Kisner, a Junction City native, moved to attend Fort Hays State University before finding herself managing police records and greeting everyone who arrived at the Hays Police Department.

"I really wanted to learn a lot more about law enforcement and the legal system. This was a really good fit for me to learn about something I was interested in," Kisner said.

Kisner spent over a year as a police records clerk before transitioning to the municipal court on Feb. 16, bringing experience from her previous role.

Kisner said the police department and municipal court offices are cross-trained. Both are located under the Hays Police Department building.

Eager to take on new challenges, Kisner embraces new responsibilities, including court attendance, legal paperwork, and regular communication with attorneys and defendants.

"It'll be a learning curve for myself," she said.

Kisner grew fond of Hays and the region, which influenced her to stay. Three months ago, she married a local farmer, further solidifying her ties to the community.

Kisner earned an associate's degree in general business, which she credits with providing valuable skills that can be applied across various professions.

"Business classes are essential for anybody in any career. You learn about effective communication, management and marketing," she said.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler highlighted several staffing changes, including a new city prosecutor, which has delayed some cases and added to the municipal court’s backlog.

"That's a bit of a challenge, but I'm excited for Megan. She's a really good fit for the position," Scheibler said.&nbsp;

Kisner appreciates remaining in the same office with her colleagues and does not see herself going anywhere as she focuses on the court's growth.

"I'm very happy just staying in this position that I have been promoted to. I think there's a lot of growth that can be done within the municipal court, and there's a lot of exciting opportunities," she said.

By TONY GUERREROHays PostHays Municipal Court introduces its newest court clerk, a rising professional in law and order.Megan Kisner, a Junction City native, moved to attend Fort Hays State University before finding herself managing police records and greeting everyone who arrived at the Hays Police Department."I really wanted to learn a lot more about law enforcement and the legal system. This was a really good fit for me to learn about something I was interested in," Kisner said.Kisner spent over a year as a police records clerk before transitioning to the municipal court on Feb. 16, bringing experience from her previous role.Kisner said the police department and municipal court offices are cross-trained. Both are located under the Hays Police Department building.Eager to take on new challenges, Kisner embraces new responsibilities, including court attendance, legal paperwork, and regular communication with attorneys and defendants."It'll be a learning curve for myself," she said.Kisner grew fond of Hays and the region, which influenced her to stay. Three months ago, she married a local farmer, further solidifying her ties to the community.Kisner earned an associate's degree in general business, which she credits with providing valuable skills that can be applied across various professions."Business classes are essential for anybody in any career. You learn about effective communication, management and marketing," she said.Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler highlighted several staffing changes, including a new city prosecutor, which has delayed some cases and added to the municipal court’s backlog."That's a bit of a challenge, but I'm excited for Megan. She's a really good fit for the position," Scheibler said.&nbsp;Kisner appreciates remaining in the same office with her colleagues and does not see herself going anywhere as she focuses on the court's growth."I'm very happy just staying in this position that I have been promoted to. I think there's a lot of growth that can be done within the municipal court, and there's a lot of exciting opportunities," she said.

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce honored both individuals and businesses during their annual awards banquet at the Geary County Convention Center Thursday night.

Hillside Investment Group was presented the Eldon L. Hoyle Economic Development Award. It was accepted for Hillside by Matt Hoover of the Highwind Brewing Company, which has been open for approximately one year.

Margaret Kilpatrick received the Outstanding Citizenship Award. She was recognized for organizing the Thanksgiving Community Dinner, work supporting the 1st Presbyteian Church and as a former teacher for her commitment to education.

Dr. Ferrell and Nita Miller received the Seitz Family Military Community Award. They were recognized for their ongoing work to support Fort Riley Soldiers and different chapels, the JC Breakfast Optimist Club and Ferrell's effort for the Past is Present progrm on KJCK Radio.

The Business Excellence honor went to Eagle Railcar, who has injected more than $5 million and plans another $5 million in 2025. Their railcar capacity will be expanded and a new warehouse facility will be in service effective on Friday.

The Tourism Advocate Award was presented to the Black History Trail of Geary County. It was accepted by Jim Sands.

So far the Black History Trail has designated six project sites ranging from the Buffalo Soldier Monument to Rathert Field and Ward Chapel. One future project will involve East 9th Street.

Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce Past Chair Matt Junghans was recognized while 2025 Chair Joel Poole also addressed the large audience for the program.

Chamber of Commerce presents annual awards

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Thursday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Parol reported a 2019 Jeep Compass driven by Paul J, Pacholski, 32, Junction City, was westbound on Farnum Creek Road from U.S. 77.&nbsp; The Jeep struck a pole, a delineator post, traveled off the roadway and came to rest in Milford Lake.

EMS transported Pacholski to Stormont Vail. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP

The Geary County Sheriff's Office/Junction City Fire Department joint dive team was able to recover the submerged vehicle and the Farnum Creek Boat Ramp is once again open.

The Geary County Sheriff's Office said there is a vehicle submerged at the Milford Lake Farnum Creek Boat Ramp that is not visible. 

The ramp is closed for use. Please avoid the area from the water as well.
