Aria Ralston, a volunteer for CASA, was honored by United Way of Junction City-Geary County Tuesday as the 2024 Ben Kitchens Volunteer of the Year recipient.Lisa Hatt, CASA Executive Director, nominated Aria for this year’s recognition.&nbsp; 

Lisa shared why she felt that Aria should be recognized as the 2024 Ben Kitchens Volunteer of the Year.&nbsp; Lisa stated in her application, "Aria has been a dedicated volunteer since 2022, and in that time, she has made an incredible impact on the lives of the children she serves. She goes above and beyond in every case, building deep and meaningful connections with each child to truly understand their needs. Her advocacy has led to numerous successful placements where children have found stability and sense of belonging."

The Ben Kitchens Volunteer of the Year Award was established to shine the spotlight of gratitude on deserving individuals for their selfless giving through organizations that serve the people of Geary County.

Ben Kitchens Volunteer of the Year is recognized

TOPEKA - A new course focusing on work zone safety has been launched for Kansas drivers.

Kansas Work Zone Safe is a free online driving course aimed at teaching teens and other new drivers how to safely navigate through work zones. The course will include information on safe behaviors, laws and situations drivers may encounter in work zones.

Current data from the Kansas Department of Transportation shows 1,705 work zone crashes occurred in Kansas in 2024 – an average of 4.6 per day. Those crashes resulted in 508 injuries and eight fatalities.

“Behind every flag, cone and flashing light are highway workers and first responders who have families that want them to come home every night,” said Haley Dougherty, KDOT State Highway Safety Engineer. “This course is designed to raise awareness in new drivers about safe driving practices in work zones, which should make the work zone safer for all.”

With an estimated 2,500 miles of construction let by KDOT in the last several years and taking place this year, many highway workers will be relying on drivers to slow down and pay attention so everyone can make it home safely.

New online work zone course geared to assist new Kansas drivers

The Junction City Ladies Reading Club will celebrate National Arbor Day this Saturday, April 26, at 9:00 a.m. The event will be an Arbor Day seedling give-away at 224 N. Jefferson St. in Junction City.&nbsp;

Ladies Reading Club will celebrate National Arbor Day

The Junction City Brigade begins the 2025 baseball season in just over a month. The first game of the season is on Thursday, May 29th, and the home opener is on Friday, May 30, at Rathert Field.

With a roster full of new players, and a new league this season, the Brigade need host families for the upcoming summer.

General Manager Cecil Aska explained that this year the Brigade joined the Kansas Collegiate League and most of their games are approximately two hours away. With a new league, a new head coach, and a new recruiting area, more host families are needed this season. In total, 19 players need a host family for this summer.

Raquel Cinco, the housing coordinator for the Junction City Brigade, has been a host family for the last two summers. Cinco said being a host family is rewarding for both the player and the family.

“The kids that we have hosted have literally become part of our family,” Cinco said. “It is an instantaneous bond with these kids.”

If you would like to become a host family, there is a simple screening process that must be done. The screening process gathers basic background information to ensure that the home is a good match for a potential player to live for the summer.

.Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association will be holding a Spring Archery Fun Shoot on Saturday, April 26 at Sportsman’s Acres, 3922 Highway K-244 Spur, just south of the Milford Lake Dam. Spokesman Larry George noted that the start time is 9:30am with sign-in starting at 9:00. &nbsp;

Entry fees are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for under 18 years old.&nbsp; The shoot will have a variety of 3D targets arrayed on the archery walking trail with varying distances.&nbsp; It will include 20 stations with 2 positions at each station for a total of 40 shots.&nbsp; 

Shooters must declare one of three categories of bow: Traditional, Bowhunter, or Open/Target Bow.&nbsp; Once signed up you can traverse the course at your own speed.&nbsp; &nbsp;Range finders will be allowed and Lunch will be provided.&nbsp;

Gift certificates will be given to the best overall score in each category and one for the best youth score.

Kansas will “Go Orange” this week as buildings, bridges and fountains will be lit in orange and people will wear orange to help raise awareness of work zone safety.

Governor Laura Kelly has officially proclaimed April 21 to 25 as National Work Zone Awareness Week in Kansas. The proclamation reminds motorists to slow down, stay alert, minimize distractions and be patient in roadway work zones – it can mean the difference between life and death.

People are encouraged to wear something orange all week, but especially on&nbsp;Go Orange Day in Kansas on Wednesday, April 23, to show support and appreciation for highway workers and their efforts.

The Go Orange effort is part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, a national safety campaign that KDOT and numerous partner organizations participate in every year. The campaign highlights the dangers faced by highway workers and motorists in work zones and encourages motorists to use safer driving behaviors.

--A facility feasibility study was authorized by the county commission. The collection of data and scheduling of interviews from vaious stakeolders are being organized. Onsite assessment is scheduled for April 29 to April 30.

--Criminal Interdiction Team 1st quarter statistics under traffic stop seizures included 115 pounds of Cocaine, 4 .5 pounds of Fentanyl, 26 pounds of Mthamphetamine, 228 pounds of Marijuana, 17 gallons of PCP, $32,000 in stolen property, seizure of $64,677 in drug/criminal currency, three criminally possessed firearms seized, these cases led to the arrest of 12 subjects.

--Two of the above cases led to the controlled deliveries of illegal drugs, which resulted in the seizure of an additional 130 pounds of cocaine and numerous arrests.

--The are pursuing a joint SWAT Team consisting of members of the Geary County Sheriff's Department, Junction City Police Department and Grandview Plaza Police Departments.

Sheriff's Department provides 1st quarter update

Many conservative-led states rely heavily on dollars from Washington.

Early this month, the U.S. Department of Education issued an ultimatum to K-12 public schools and state education agencies: Certify that you are not engaging in discrimination under the banner of diversity, equity and inclusion, or risk losing federal funding — including billions in support for low-income students.

The backlash was immediate. Some states with Democratic governors refused to comply, arguing that the directive lacks legal basis, fails to clearly define what constitutes “<a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/reminder-of-legal-obligations-undertaken-exchange-receiving-federal-financial-assistance-and-request-certification-under-title-vi-and-sffa-v-harvard-april-3" target="_blank">illegal DEI practices</a>,” and threatens vital equity-based initiatives in their schools.

After lawsuits from the National Education Association teachers union and the American Civil Liberties Union, the Department of Education agreed to delay enforcement until&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aclu.org/cases/national-education-association-et-al-v-us-department-of-education-et-al?document=Agreement" target="_blank">after April 24</a>.

But states across the country, both liberal- and conservative-led, are worried about losing other aid: the pandemic-era money that in some cases they’ve already spent or committed to spending.

The Department of Education has long played a critical role in distributing federal funds to states for K-12 education, including Title I grants to boost staffing in schools with high percentages of low-income students, and emergency relief like that provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conservative-led states — particularly Mississippi, South Dakota and Arkansas — rely the most heavily on these funds to sustain services in high-need districts.

The 15 states with the highest percentage of their K-12 budget coming from federal funding in fiscal year 2022 — the latest year with data available from the National Center for Education Statistics — voted for Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Similarly, 10 of the 15 states receiving the highest amounts of Title I funding in fiscal year 2024 also voted for Trump.

Mississippi and Kentucky have sent letters to the Department of Education expressing concern over halted pandemic aid.

The clash over federal funding comes even as the future of the Department of Education is murky, given President Donald Trump’s pledge to dismantle the department.

In letters to the Department of Education, state officials and superintendents in Illinois, New York and Wisconsin pushed back against the DEI directive.

<a href="https://www.nyssba.org/clientuploads/nyssba_pdf/titlevi-040525.pdf#:~:text=The%20certification%20remains%20in%20effect%2C%20as%20do,judicial%20decision%20or%20change%20the%20terms%20and" target="_blank">New York officials</a>&nbsp;said they would not provide additional certification beyond what the state already has done, asserting that there “are no federal or State laws prohibiting the principles of DEI.” Illinois Superintendent Tony Sanders&nbsp;<a href="https://www.isbe.net/Documents/ISBE-Response-Title-VI-Certification.pdf" target="_blank">wrote that</a>&nbsp;he was concerned that the Department of Education was changing the conditions of federal funding without a formal administrative process. Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly&nbsp;<a href="https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/news/4.9.25_-_DPI_Letter_to_USDE.pdf" target="_blank">questioned the legality of the order</a>.

New York State Department of Education Counsel and Deputy Commissioner Daniel Morton-Bentley noted that the federal department’s current stance on DEI starkly contrasts with its position during Trump’s first term, when then-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos supported such efforts.

<a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/04/10/colorado-trump-dei-order-state-education-board/" target="_blank">Colorado</a>&nbsp;and<a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-04-11/california-defies-trump-education-order-certify-school-districts-eliminate-dei" target="_blank">&nbsp;California</a>&nbsp;also confirmed they would not comply with the Department of Education’s order.

While some states with liberal leaders are gearing up for legal battles and possible revocation of funding, conservative-led states such as Florida have embraced the federal directive as part of a broader push to reshape public education.

In Florida,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/266" target="_blank">anti-DEI laws</a>&nbsp;have been in place dating back to 2023. In fact,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">many&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">school&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">districts&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2025/03/03/florida-schools-say-theyll-comply-with-federal-push-eliminate-dei/" target="_blank">and the state education department</a>&nbsp;say they plan to follow the federal department’s directives, noting the similar state laws.

In March, the Department of Education abruptly rescinded previously approved extensions of pandemic-era aid, ending access to funds months ahead of the original March 2026 deadline.

When the Massachusetts governor’s office voiced concern over that decision, the federal department’s reply on social media was blunt: “<a href="https://x.com/i/flow/login?redirect_after_login=%2Fexplore%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%257Ctwcamp%255Etweetembed%257Ctwterm%255E1907126614107816273%257Ctwgr%255E13023b2f184f133a77dd7478cf0809d5afc7e4bf%257Ctwcon%255Es1_%26ref_url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.k12dive.com%252Fnews%252Fstates-lawmakers-pushback-on-covid-fund-spending-extensions%252F744811%252F" target="_blank">COVID is over.</a>”

Sixteen&nbsp;<a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/state-covid-schools-funding-complaint.pdf" target="_blank">mostly Democratic-led&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/state-covid-schools-funding-complaint.pdf" target="_blank">states</a>&nbsp;and the District of Columbia filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of Education and Secretary Linda McMahon, challenging the abrupt rescission of previously approved extensions for spending COVID-19 education relief funds.

But backlash against abrupt federal cuts to education has not been limited to blue states.

Mississippi’s Department of Education warned the cuts would jeopardize more than $137 million in already obligated funds, slated for literacy initiatives, mental health services and infrastructure repairs. “The impact of this sudden reversal is detrimental to Mississippi students,” state Superintendent Lance Evans wrote in&nbsp;<a href="https://mdek12.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/59/2025/04/MS-ESSER-Letter-04.02.25-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank">a letter</a>&nbsp;to McMahon.

The letter also outlines the state’s repeated — but unsuccessful — efforts to draw down millions in approved funds since February.

Shanderia Minor, a spokesperson for the Mississippi education department, told Stateline the agency is awaiting next steps and direction about the funds and federal directives.

In Kentucky, state Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher&nbsp;<a href="https://kentuckylantern.com/briefs/ky-education-commissioner-sounds-alarm-about-sudden-halt-to-federal-covid-payments-to-schools/" target="_blank">told districts</a>&nbsp;— which stand to lose tens of millions in pandemic aid — that abrupt federal changes leave them “in a difficult position,” with schools already having committed funds to teacher training and facility upgrades.

According to Kentucky Department of Education spokesperson Jennifer Ginn, the state has about $18 million in unspent pandemic aid funds left to distribute to districts. And districts have about $38 million in unspent funds, for a total $56 million that could be lost.

Lauren Farrow, a former Florida public school teacher, told Stateline that schools that receive Title I money are already underfunded — and the federal threat only widens the gap.

“Florida is pouring billions into education — but where is it going? Because we’re not seeing it in schools, especially not in Title I schools,” said Farrow. “I taught five minutes away from a wealthier school, and we didn’t even have pencils. Teachers were buying shoes for students. Why is that still happening?”

Tafshier Cosby, senior director of the Center for Organizing and Partnerships at the National Parents Union, a parents advocacy group, told Stateline that while most families don’t fully understand the various school funding systems, they feel the impact of cuts in the classroom.

Cosby said parents are worried about the loss of support services for students with disabilities, Title I impacts, and how debates about DEI may deflect from more urgent needs like literacy and teacher support.

“We’ve been clear: DEI isn’t the federal government’s role — it’s up to states,” she said. “But the confusion is real. And the impact could be devastating.”

Today, as a consultant working with teachers across Florida’s Orange County Public Schools — one of the largest districts in the country — Farrow says many educators are fearful and confused about how to support their students under changing DEI laws.

“Teachers are asking, ‘Does this mean I can’t seat a student with glasses at the front of the room anymore?’ There’s so much fear around what we’re allowed to do now.”

“There’s no one giving teachers guidance or even basic acknowledgment. We’re just left wondering what we’re allowed to say or do — and that’s dangerous.”

Why is that still happening?”<h2>Effects in the classroom</h2>Tafshier Cosby, senior director of the Center for Organizing and Partnerships at the National Parents Union, a parents advocacy group, told Stateline that while most families don’t fully understand the various school funding systems, they feel the impact of cuts in the classroom.Cosby said parents are worried about the loss of support services for students with disabilities, Title I impacts, and how debates about DEI may deflect from more urgent needs like literacy and teacher support.“We’ve been clear: DEI isn’t the federal government’s role — it’s up to states,” she said. “But the confusion is real. And the impact could be devastating.”Today, as a consultant working with teachers across Florida’s Orange County Public Schools — one of the largest districts in the country — Farrow says many educators are fearful and confused about how to support their students under changing DEI laws.“Teachers are asking, ‘Does this mean I can’t seat a student with glasses at the front of the room anymore?’ There’s so much fear around what we’re allowed to do now.”“There’s no one giving teachers guidance or even basic acknowledgment. The Geary County Sheriff's Department reported that on Sunday Deputies responded to US 77-Highway at mile marker 148 in reference to a three vehicle injury accident. Alleigh Swarts of Manhattan KS was traveling southbound in her 2008 Kia Sorento when she hydroplaned and side swiped a 1989 Buick Park Avenue being driven by Keenan Sanger-Koepke of Herringto who was traveling north.

After striking the Buick, Swarts’ vehicle then struck a 2022Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Travis Hiatt of Manhattan, KS who was traveling north. 

Occupants of the Chevrolet Truck were transported by Junction City EMS/Fire to Stormont Vail of Flint Hills for Medical Evaluation.&nbsp;

Library Board meeting date changee

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in March. This is unchanged from 3.8% in February and an increase from 3.3% in March 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67.1% in March, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is down from 4.8 percent in February to 4.7 percent in March.&nbsp; The rate in Riley, Wabaunsee and Pottawatomie counties is also down slightly.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 900 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 600 over the month, while government increased by 300. The largest job gains in the private sector were in leisure and hospitality (+1,100 jobs) and financial activities (+400 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,000 jobs).

Since March 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 2,700. This change is due to a decrease of 700 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,400 government jobs.

Two Junction City High School Athletes sign to play College Sports next year

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Junction City will hold its annual auction Saturday, April 26, at the Bradley Gymnasium on the school's campus. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m.

The annual auction for St. X. is the school's largest fundraiser each year. This year, the theme is “Denim and Diamonds.” Tickets to the event are $60 each, $300 for a table of six people, or $400 for a table of eight. A ticket to the auction features a catered meal from Hog Wild Pit BBQ, an open bar, raffles, a drink and dine pull, and opportunities to bid on items for the live and silent auctions. The proceeds from the annual auction will be used for the operational costs of the school.

Every year at the auction, there is an “item-less item.” This year, that "item-less item" is improving the locker rooms and preschool restrooms. Attendees can also bid or donate money to that.

BHS Construction has announced that there will be a major infrastructure and streetscape improvement project in Aggieville that will begin following Kansas State University’s Spring graduation, about May 19th.

Phase One of construction will begin at the intersection of Moro Street and North 12th Street, with an anticipated completion date of mid-June. This initial phase includes critical upgrades to essential utilities—water, sewer, and stormwater systems—laying the groundwork for safer, more accessible streets and sidewalks. Upgraded infrastructure will also improve emergency response readiness and ensure long-term reliability.

From North 12th Street (Moro to Alley) improved streetscapes will include repaved sidewalks, outdoor dining/seating and more. These improvements are designed to support local businesses, enhance community event flexibility, and provide a more pedestrian-friendly environment for both residents and visitors. While phased street and sidewalk closures will be necessary, the construction schedule has been planned to minimize disruption and maintain access as much as possible.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations.

Just after 9p.m. Thursday, police arrested 29-year-old&nbsp;Sherman Sherin II of Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Sherin is being held on a $20,000 bond on requested charges of Stalking and two counts of Violation of Protection Order. He was discharged from the Kansas Department of Corrections in May of 2024, according to online records.

MANHATTAN — Charles Jake has been appointed vice president of legal affairs and general counsel at Kansas State University, effective June 8. Jake currently serves as vice president and general counsel for the University of Toledo. Jake was selected following a national search."I look forward to having Charles' leadership and legal experience as part of our leadership team at K-State," Linton said. "His experience with various higher education legal matters and his collaboration skillset are great strengths for the university's Office of General Counsel."Jake will serve as a senior advisor and strategic partner on the President's Cabinet while leading the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/generalcounsel/">K-State Office of General Counsel</a>.

Jake's responsibilities include overseeing legal services to all campuses and related entities of the university, including K-State Athletics and K-State Research and Extension. He will also manage the representation of the university and its administrators in judicial and administrative proceedings and in negotiations with third parties; direct the coordination of all outside counsel for the university; and collaborate with counsel for the Kansas Board of Regents and its related institutions, among other duties.&nbsp;&nbsp;
