Recently elected Geary County officials will take their oath of office at 10 a.m. Monday at the County Office Building.&nbsp;

Following that the commission will conduct their annual reorganization including election of a chairman and vice chairman plus appointments of commissioners to public boards.

The governing's body meeting is scheduled from 10 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Geary County Commissioners this week publicly thanked the county's public works and sheriff's department employees for their work during the recent winter storm. They did everything from clearing roads to helping motorists during the snow.

Commissioners thanked Alex Tyson for his leadership during his four years on the governing body. Thursday was his final meeting as a member of the commission.

The Chair for the governing body Trish Giordano noted Tyson did a lot. A big accomplishment for the past four years involved saving the hospital. Stormont Vail assumed operations, succeeding Geary Community Hospital.

Junction City Public Works personnel spent Friday removing snow from the central and west sides of the city. The early focus was from 6th Street to Old Highway 40 and from the west side if town east to Reynolds Street.

Up next will be the north side of town from 6th Street to Blue Jay Way to Grant Ave. and also from 6th Street north to the city limits.

Crews have been working 12-hour shifts around the clock since 1 a.m. last Saturday.

Contractors have been brought in to remove snow from cul-de-sacs and downtown parking lots.

Junction City Public Works crews focus on residential areas

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Foundation for Agriculture is now accepting applications for 2025 scholarship awards.

“Supporting education is one of the core missions of the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture,” says KFB President Joe Newland. “We are so proud to support the next generation of leaders in agriculture as they continue their education at institutions across the state.”

The program offers up to 47 scholarships at universities, community and technical colleges in Kansas for students who demonstrate a commitment to agriculture, leadership and community involvement. To apply, students or their parents must have an active Kansas Farm Bureau membership.

Detailed guidelines and the application form are available at www.kfb.org/scholarships. The deadline to apply is March 1.

The KFB Foundation for Agriculture has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships over the past decade to ensure the continued growth and success of the agricultural industry.

Public Works has revised the weekly sanitation pickup schedule due to the snowy road conditions. Public Works crews will try and combine the sanitation pickup routes for this week starting Friday, January 10th. The revised schedule is posted below.

Trash/garbage pick-up will be picked up the following workdays as follows:

Tuesday &amp; Wednesday’s pickup day will be Friday, January 10th

Wednesday &amp;Thursday’s pickup day will be Saturday, January 11th

Thursday’s pickup day will be Sunday, January 12th

Friday’s pickup day will be Monday, January 13th

Monday’s pickup day will be Tuesday, January 14th

Tuesday &amp; Wednesday’s pickup day on Wednesday, January 15th

City curbside customers need to ensure that their poly cart is placed at the curbside where sanitation workers have easy access to the cart. Sanitation workers will not be pulling the cart through or over snow drifts.

This sanitation pickup schedule is subject change due to the weather conditions.

In order to ensure pick-up, your trash should be set out by 6 AM.

Change in the City sanitation pick up schedule

This Saturday, January 11, 2025, being the 2nd Saturday of the month, the Geary County Landfill &amp; HHW/Recycling Center were scheduled to be open.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Junction City woman on multiple allegations after an arrest in Manhattan.

Just after 4p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 24-year-old Anastasia Kenyon, 24, of Junction City, in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kenyon was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. The original charges in this matter are making false information, theft by deception value less than $1,500.

She is being held on a $20,000 bond.&nbsp;

&nbsp;JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;For the safety of our students and staff, Geary County Schools USD 475 schools will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 9. All athletic and after-school activities have been canceled.

Public Works Director Ray Ibarra noted that Junction City crews have begun clearing snow from residential areas, beginning from 6th Street to Ash Street and on Spring Valley Road east to East Street.

Other future snow removal areas will include areas south of Ash and north of 6th Streets. Crews will make only one pass on residential streets. Residents are also asked to move vehicles out of the way.

Also on Thursday sanitation crews will pick up the Monday route trash. Trash pick up did not occur on Monday due to the storm.

Thursday, January 9 has been designated a National Day of Mourning out of respect for the passing of former President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. 

The 1st Infantry Division has announced that government offices will be closed and services on Fort Riley will be limited.
