“Growing Up In Junction City – Some Reflections By Keith Hemenway”

	In 2003, Keith Hemenway, who was 83 years old, shared memories of Junction City in the early 1900’s with Gaylynn Childs, retired Executive Director of the Geary County Historical Society:  Keith’s father owned the Junction City Sentinel, a weekly newspaper. One of the first homes Keith remembered was in the Raber Flats.  “This stone apartment building at the corner of Fourth and Jefferson Streets was built by Dr. C.K. Raber, a prominent local dentist who was the mayor here during several terms.”  

	In 1908, Keith’s father built a house on South Jefferson, next door to Dr. Fred O’Donnell.  Another close neighbor was Mr. L.J. Platt, who was a lawyer and judge. 

	The O’Donnell house, at 504 S. Jefferson Street was still lived in by a daughter, Betty Cleary, in 1985 and it was much the same as it had originally been. The house formerly had stables behind it where the doctor kept his ponies. Keith recalled often walking over to the old polo field, which was at the corner of Madison and Pine and went clear up toward the cemetery to watch Dr. Fred and the renowned Junction City polo team practice.

	Keith also recalled walking uptown. His first stop was always O’Reilly’s Livery Stable across the street east from the City Park.  The second stop was on East Seventh Street where the old Degitz Blacksmith Shop used to be.  He would watch them shoe horses and then go on to his third stop, which was the Brown’s Harness Shop, where the Cowen Shoe Store was for many years at 719 N. Washington Street.  Finally, he would arrive at the newspaper office in the basement of the building at Seventh and Washington Streets.

	The old Opera House and City Building was another favorite of young Keith’s.  The main entrance to the Opera House was on the Jefferson Street side.  The fire station was on the corner facing Seventh Street where with the two black horses were kept.  The harness was hanging up over the horses and there was a brass pole the firemen would slide down.  They would pull a cord and the harness would drop down over the horses and firemen would just have to fasten a few buckles.  Then the horses would be ready to go.

	Keith graduated from Junction City High School in 1919.  He left Junction City for college and a career in the eastern part of the United States.  Keith returned to Junction City in 1960.          He was involved in organizing the Geary County Historical Society in 1972.  Keith died in 1995 at the age of 90

“Historical Background About Our City (Heritage) Park”

Gaylynn Childs, retired Executive Director of the Geary County Historical Society, wrote in an article in the book Set In Stone that the square in the center of Junction City now called Heritage Park and earlier designated as City Park, was always intended as a “park”.  However, there were issues of contention about the park for nearly a hundred years. 

	When the original town site was surveyed in 1858, the block bounded by Sixth Street on the north, Washington Street on the east, Fifth Street on the south and Jefferson Street on the west was designated as the “city park”. When the townsite was platted and registered in September 1860, the park plot was deeded to Richard C. Whitney, Mayor of Junction City. 

	In the early 1860s, the first “friend of the park”, General Knox, laid out the paths in a winding serpent-like manner and planted trees along the paths with care.  He faithfully watered the trees in order that they might survive the dry summers and be a permanent feature of the city”. It was later claimed by Thomas Dever, another pioneer mayor, that Knox’s efforts were not a success.

	In an 1864 article in the Union newspaper where the author stated: “S.M. Stickler was brought before Mayor Hall for having appropriated the city park to his own use as a cattle yard.  Stickler had the audacity to turn the cattle loose in the park and was fined $5.00.”

	In 1870, former Mayor Whitney attempted to deed the park to H.P. Hynes a prominent grocer in town. There had been a picket fence put up all around the park. However, during the night of January 19, 1871, Mr. Hynes, threw down a section of the picket fence, moved into the park, cut down some of General Knox’s trees, erected a corral of sorts and built a pig pen, chicken coop and some say even a house.  Within a short time the citizens removed Mr. Hynes into the street.  He was arrested and his project brought to a halt.  

	In 1891, the courts ruled that the Geary County Commissioners held title to the park “in trust” for the city of Junction City and in 1899 there was public sentiment in favor of appropriating the park square as the site for the new courthouse.  Even in 1949, there were proposals to turn the park now known as Heritage Park into businesses. 

In 2020, Heritage Park has a fountain, bandstand, flowers and shrubs that add to its beauty.  Monuments and memorials are in place to remind us of those who have served our country, county and city.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have made an arrest.

Just after 3 p.m. Monday, police responded to an armed robbery at the Pe Gas Station in the 700 block of North Ridge Road in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

A 55-year-old male employee and multiple witnesses told police a suspect who was later determined to be 21-year-old Kane Guffey of Wichita entered the business, fired a gun near the cashier, and demanded cash.&nbsp; 

Guffey took the cash and he fled on foot, running northbound on North Ridge Road.&nbsp; No one was injured in the robbery.

On Thursday afternoon, police arrested Guffey&nbsp; at a residence in the 1700 Block of South Saint Francis Avenue in Wichita. He is being<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20056531"> held&nbsp; on a $100,000 bond </a>on a requested charge of aggravated robbery.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and searching for a suspect.

Just after 3p.m. Monday, police responded to a robbery in progress at a gas station-convenience store in the 700 Block of North Ridge in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

A 55-year-old male employee told police an unknown suspect&nbsp; entered the business, pulled out a handgun and fired it toward the employee, according to Davidson.&nbsp; The suspect described as a white male in this 20s with a dark complexion, short braided hair with a pony tail and wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans demanded cash, took it and fled the business on foot.

The employee and customers in the business were not injured. Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call police.

Police: Kan. robbery suspect fired gun, took cash

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack that sent a man to the hospital.

Just after 10:30p.m. Saturday, police responded to the 2400 block of SE Colonial drive in Topeka reference a stabbing, according to officer Jeffrey Sloan. Upon arrival, officers located a man with life threatening stab wounds. He was transported to a local hospital. 

This is being investigated as a domestic violence incident. Police believe all parties involved in this incident are accounted for. The victim's name has not been released. Police have not reported an arrest.

Police: Kan. man with life-threatening injuries from stabbing

KANSAS CITY– A Kansas City man was charged in federal court Friday with the arson fire at Beyond Thee Four Walls Ministries this week, according to the United State's Attorney.

Christopher A. Durant, 38, was charged with arson in a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City.&nbsp;

Today’s complaint alleges that Durant set fire to the building at 5910-5916 East U.S. Highway 40 in Kansas City, which housed Beyond Thee Four Walls Ministries, on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

The Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department was dispatched to that location at approximately 3:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire inside the one-story commercial structure.

According to an affidavit filed in support of Friday's federal criminal complaint, investigators reviewed video surveillance footage that depicted an unknown man – later identified as Durant – throwing chunks of asphalt at the front windows of the building at about 12:54 a.m. A few minutes later, the affidavit says, Durant returns and lights an unknown object and places it in through what appears to be the mail slot in the front door. He then lights what appears to be a piece of paper and places it in through the mail slot. He then lights another unidentified object and places it in through the front window previously broken out by the chunks of asphalt. Duran then leaves at approximately 1 a.m.

At about 1:30 a.m., the affidavit says, video surveillance footage depicts Durant returning to the church, lighting what appears to be a piece of paper, and placing it through the front window. Approximately two minutes later, Durant walks up to the front window with an object in his hand and leans in through the broken window, which is then followed by a large flash consistent with the introduction and subsequent ignition of an ignitable liquid.

During the fire scene examination, an accelerant detection canine was used to process the scene to determine if an ignitable liquid was present. The canine indicated an area on the floor inside the church, under the same window Durant allegedly had broken and appeared to introduce an ignitable liquid. This area was also later determined to be the area of the fire origin.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, ATF agents noticed Durant, who matched the description of the unknown suspect depicted in the church video surveillance footage, walking on Van Brunt Boulevard and arrested him. At the time of his arrest, Durant was in possession of marijuana.

Kansas City man charged in church arson

BUTLER COUNTY–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office have made an additional arrest connected to the murder of 78-year-old Danny Shue of Eureka, Kansas, according to a media release.

Just before 10a.m. Thursday, Leon A. Lindsay, 34, of El Dorado, was arrested at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office for felony murder, aggravated burglary, felony theft, and conspiracy to commit felony theft. He is currently being held at the Butler County Jail.

Assisting the KBI and the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office in this arrest were the El Dorado Police Department, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, and K-9 handlers from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Previously charged in this case were 30-year-old Noah J. E. Farr, of Dighton, 25-year-old Joseph E. Warden, of El Dorado, and a 17-year-old teen from El Dorado, who was not named as he is a juvenile.

Just after 10 p.m. August 19, the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office responded to do a welfare check at a home at 1607 Quincy Street in Eureka, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

 When deputies responded, they searched the residence and discovered 78-year-old Danny Shue deceased inside. Shue was pronounced dead at the scene.

KBI: 4th arrest in murder of 78-year-old Kan. man

WESTWOOD, Kan. (AP) — Law enforcement authorities say a Kansas prison inmate is charged with killing a man in 2003 in a suburban Kansas City grocery store. 

Forty-year-old Eugene Clayton Keltner faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of David “Ray” Ninemire in Westwood. 

Ninemire was shot when he went to help a co-worker during a robbery at the grocery store. Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe on Thursday declined to say what evidence led to Keltner's arrest. 

Keltner is imprisoned in Lansing after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a 2004 shooting death in Kansas City, Kansas.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Thursday along Prospect Avenue blocks east of U.S. 71, police said in a news release. Responding officers found a man inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was take to a hospital, where he later died.

Police have not released the victim’s name or age. No arrests had been reported in the case by Friday morning.

Kansas City police investigate city's 134th homicide of year

ELLIS COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a high speed chase Wednesday evening on Interstate 70.

Just before 7p.m. a Kansas Highway Patrol did a speed check on a westbound mini van with Texas license plates just east of Victoria, according to Trooper Tod Hileman.

The driver later identified as 26-year-old Demareon Gaskin of Grandview, Missouri took the Victoria exit and quickly returned to I-70 eastbound and the pursuit was underway.

Gaskin crossed over the median of the interstate, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes and exited the I-70 using the Walker Avenue on ramp. The van then returned to I-70 traveling westbound at speeds of 105 miles per hour, according to Hileman.

Gaskin used the on ramp at Gorham to exit the interstate and traveled north on 176th Street into and out of the city of Gorham. At this point the state trooper lost the van, according to Hileman.

At 7:29p.m. Hays Police located the van that was now westbound back on Interstate 70 just east of Commerce Parkway. Police stopped the van, now driven by an unidentified woman, at the Vine Street off-ramp.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Authorities took Gaskin and the woman to the hospital as a precaution, according to Hileman. They were not injured.

Police booked Gaskin into the Ellis County Jail on requested charges that included reckless driving, flee and elude, transporting an open container, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, felony possession of a firearm and numerous traffic violations, according to Hileman. Police did arrest the woman.

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating vandalism of a political sign in Cowley County and have made an arrest of a teen suspect identified as&nbsp;Garrett Bogle, 19, of Cowley County on requested charges of criminal damage to property, according to the <a href="https://www.cowleycounty.org/media/Sheriff/Sheriff%20Daily%20Log/August%2026,%202020.pdf">activity report from sheriff's department</a>.

On August 16, deputies responded to the 25,000 block of U.S. 77 Highway north of Arkansas City for a report of Criminal Damage to Property to a billboard sign, according to Cowley County Undersheriff Christina McDonald.&nbsp; 

Vandals spread blue paint on the billboard that featured the political slogan MAGA in red and white. Vandals also used yellow spray paint to write "BLM and the word Resist."

&nbsp;There were several tips and leads generated in this case and deputies reported late Tuesday they made an arrest.&nbsp;

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teen in connection with a stolen car, police chase and crash.

According to Salina Police Captain, Abner's Auto, 212 East Iron Avenue in Salina reported someone on Tuesday stole a small amount of cash and a 2007 Saturn Ion valued at $4,000.

The front door window of the business had been shattered but remained intact and a 25-inch by 31-inch south side window was broken at the dealership, according to Forrester

Later on Wednesday, the Concordia Police Department was involved in a vehicle pursuit with a black 2007 Saturn Ion, and during the pursuit, the vehicle struck a Belleville Police Department patrol vehicle that was assisting.

The driver of the Saturn identified as Marquez Ruffin, 19, of Salina, fled the crash and was later arrested in Republic County, according to a social media report from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/ConcordiaPoliceDepartment/">Concordia Police </a>

The Concordia Police Department has requested the following charges that include No registration, Speeding, Fail to maintain lane, No proof of insurance, Flee and elude, nterference with a law enforcement officer, Avoiding spike strips

Requested charges from the Salina Police Department are pending, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Teen in stolen car struck police vehicle during pursuit

RILEY COUNTY—Police are investigating a robbery and have made an arrest.

On November 9, 2019, police responded to a report of an aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping in the 400 block of Fremont Street in Manhattan, according Riley County Police Department spokesperson Rachel Pate.

Officers listed a 30-year-old male as the victim when it was reported a 29-year-old male and a 32-year-old male pointed a gun at him and demanded money and his phone.

On Wednesday, police arrested Joseph Trevail, 32 of Manhattan, on a Riley County District Court warrant

Just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop at 10th Street and Wilson Street for an equipment violation on a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, according to a media release.

During the stop, police service dog Menta was deployed and conducted a free air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. K-9 Menta indicated to the presence of illegal narcotics. A search of the vehicle was conducted. Police located controlled substances including marijuana, cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Officers arrested Elijah Cheney, 22, and transported him to the Barton County Jail. He is being held on a $10,000 bond.

Police K9 helps catch 22-year-old Kansas felon

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a violent robbery and have made an arrest.

Just after 9:30 a.m. Monday, police responded to a disturbance with a weapon call at a business in the 4000 block of South Laura in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

&nbsp;A 39-year-old female employee told police that a suspect later identified as 31-year-old Michael Sheppard, Jr., concealed items inside the store and exited without paying.

When she approached him, Sheppard pulled out a knife and threatened her. The employee was not injured.

Sheppard then fled the business in a silver Chevy Equinox that was reported stolen.

Investigators determined&nbsp; Sheppard was involved in the violent crime. An officer located Sheppard and the stolen vehicle Monday afternoon in the area of MacArthur and Laura. He was arrested without incident, and the vehicle was recovered.

Sheppard is being held on requested&nbsp;charges of aggravated assault, theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal deprivation of an automobile, and warrants, according to Davidson.

Kansas man pulled knife on employee during robbery

COWLEY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities arrested a Kansas man after he allegedly brandished a knife outside a local store.

Just before 2p.m. August 22, police were dispatched to the parking lot of Walmart Supercenter, 2701 N. Summit Street in Arkansas City for a report of a disturbance involving a knife.

Police made contact with the victim, a 21-year-old Winfield man, and several witnesses, who reported the incident started after one of the parties honked his car horn at the other driver on Summit Street.

One of the drivers pulled his vehicle into the Walmart parking lot and parked it. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect later identified as&nbsp; 29-year-old Eric Carter Rogers allegedly became confrontational with the victim and pushed him.

Rogers then allegedly displayed a large knife and began yelling at the victim. 

Police located Rogers inside Walmart and took him into custody without incident on requested charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor battery. He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $10,750

Just before 6:00p.m. Tuesday, police arrested Jamichael Strahan, 19, of Ft. Riley, on requested charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and contributing to a child’s misconduct. 

Strahan was issued a total bond of $500,000.00 causing him to remain confined at the time of this release.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A driver was killed when a carjacking suspect ran a stop sign as he fled Kansas City police and hit another vehicle, police said.

The crash happened late Monday night after officers spotted a vehicle they believed had been carjacked earlier in the evening, police spokesman Jake Becchina said in a news release.

Officers tried to stop the suspected stolen vehicle, but the driver fled, leading police on a chase. A short distance later, the driver ran a stop sign just east of Ashland Square Park and hit another vehicle, Becchina said.

The man driving the vehicle that was hit died at the scene, Becchina said, and a passenger with him was injured.

Three other people were arrested at the scene and also taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Becchina said.

Police are investigating the crash and the carjacking, he said.

Just before 12:30a.m. Monday, a state trooper observed a westbound Chevrolet Camaro speeding on Interstate 80 in Lincoln, according to a media release. The trooper clocked the vehicle traveling at 128 miles per hour in the 65 miles per hour zone. The trooper attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the vehicle increased speed and fled.

The trooper initiated a pursuit as the Camaro fled westbound on.&nbsp; After a short time, troopers were able to successfully deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle. The Camaro then came to a stop near Milford. The driver identified as 33-year-old Mamell Martinez, Hinesville, Georgia, was immediately taken into custody.

The entire pursuit lasted less than ten minutes. During the pursuit, the Camaro reached speeds in excess of 155 miles per hour.

The driver, Jamell Martinez, 33, of Hinesville, Georgia, was arrested on requested charges of willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, and traffic violations. He remains in the Lancaster County Jail.

Driver clocked going 155 mph during interstate chase

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect wanted on a felony warrant in Missouri on multiple charges after a traffic stop in Kansas.

Just after 11:15 p.m. Sunday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop near SE 29th&nbsp;and Croco Road in Shawnee County on a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta for an equipment violation, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.&nbsp;

The driver, Diandre L. Spates, Sr., 47, Topeka, was arrested and booked into jail on requested charges of&nbsp; felony possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony interference with a law enforcement officer and the felony warrant from Missouri.

Suspect wanted in Missouri captured after Kansas traffic stop

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas felon accused a fatal shooting during an altercation in a car made his first court appearance Friday.

Donovan Harrington, 25 is charged with second degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. August 17, police responded to a shooting call in the 600 block of South Armour Drive in Wichita, according to Officer Kevin Wheeler. Upon arrival, officers located 27-year-old Miguel Tapia outside of a Nissan Pathfinder with gunshot wounds. Tapia was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation has revealed that Tapia was driving the Pathfinder with a suspect later identified as Harrington  and a 19-year-old and 20-year-old females as passengers. 

An argument ensued between Harrington and Tapia, and Harrington shot him. Harrington and the passengers ran from the vehicle and flagged down an unknowing driver to get a ride.

Harrington was arrested Tuesday during a vehicle stop in the 600 block of South Woodlawn, according to Wheeler.

This incident was not random, and it remains under investigation. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Harrington has previously been convicted on of theft, criminal threat, aggravated robbery, Flee or elude law enforcement with five or more moving violations and is currently on parole through the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Just after 7:30 a.m. Monday, police responded to a shooting call in the 600 block of South Armour Drive in Wichita. Upon arrival, officers located Tapia outside of a gray Nissan Pathfinder with gunshot wounds. Tapia was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation has revealed that Tapia was inside the Pathfinder when a disturbance broke out, and he was shot.

This incident was not random, and it remains under investigation, according to Wheeler

Earlier, the convention renominated Vice President Mike Pence, and he thanked the delegates in person.

“The choice in this election has never been clearer and the stakes have never been higher,” Pence said. “We’re going to make American great again. Again.”

Party Chair Ronna McDaniel said as she began the proceedings: “We are obviously disappointed we could not hold this event in the same way we had originally planned,” But she thanked the city for allowing the convention to move forward in its truncated form.

Many of the usual trappings of a convention were present, including signs designating each state and gift bags with Republican swag. But chairs on the ballroom floor were arranged with lots of space between them and convention organizers told participants to wear masks, though adherence to the rule was uneven. Still, the fact an in-person meeting was held at all marked a sharp contrast with Democrats.

Last week, the Democrats created a well-received&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/1d43f47dfe9dd79a42caca46eb34d374">roll call via video montage</a>&nbsp;with diverse officials and others from states across the country. The Republicans, overwhelmingly white, spoke from the ballroom floor.

After Trump’s renomination, much of the action is shifting to Washington, where Republicans will spend the week trying to convince the American people that the president deserves a second term.

The GOP convention is a crucial moment for Trump, who is trailing in national and battleground state polls and under intense pressure to turn the race around. Just 23% think the country is heading in the right direction, while 75% think it’s on the wrong path, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/a464966595a326a6b2e4c6f9888f7d8c">new poll</a>&nbsp;from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Aides want the convention to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c9f91ff4110ce2d0b98cc11cde0ac99f">recast the story</a>&nbsp;of Trump’s presidency and present the election as a choice between his vision for America’s future and the one presented by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/de0107b02c0373105b86d5c4d3d9a302">Democratic nominee Joe Biden.</a>

McDaniel worked to highlight that contrast, accusing Biden of embracing a radical left agenda and pushing back on Democrats’ efforts to demonstrate Biden’s empathy and kindness.

“The truth is there’s only one person who has empathized with everyday Americans and actually been fighting for them every single day over the past four years, and that’s President Donald J. Trump,” she said.

For both sides, it’s an unconventional convention year.

The parties’ election year gatherings are typically massive events, drawing thousands of delegates, party leaders, donors, journalists and political junkies for a week of speeches, parties and after-parties that inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy and deliver a multiday infomercial for the nominee.

The coronavirus has changed all that, as much as Trump has resisted. Just 336 delegates — six from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories — have been invited to cast proxy votes on behalf of the more than 2,500 regular delegates. And stringent safety measures have been put in place guided by a 42-page health and safety plan developed by a hired doctor.

Attendees were asked to practice enhanced social distancing and get tested prior to travel, fill out a pre-travel health questionnaire and participate in a daily symptom tracker. They’re also being tested onsite, have been asked to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/a87da6ce7831863152f0d904b9d1abe1">maintain a 6-foot (1.8-meter) distance from other people and to use face coverings</a>&nbsp;as a condition of participation — though many attendees were seen openly flouting those rules Monday morning. The RNC has also committed to contacting every participant five, 14 and 21 days after the event to check on potential symptoms.

The event had been met with protests, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/bc7c82ad0ec2617e725a64940227df05">police have made several arrests.</a>

Besides the formal nomination roll call, the party is also spending time in Charlotte approving a handful of new resolutions, including one that backs Columbus Day as a federal holiday and one that labels the Southern Poverty Law Center, which catalogs the country’s hate groups, as a “radical organization.” Another bemoans “cancel culture,” warning that it “has grown into erasing of history, encouraging lawlessness, muting citizens and violating free exchange of ideas, thoughts, and speech.”

But they will not vote on a new 2020 platform, after a unanimous vote to forgo one this year.

“RESOLVED, That the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda,” a resolution instead reads, in part.

After the Charlotte kickoff, most of the GOP convention will take place in Washington, D.C., at and around the White House, as well as by video. It will feature remarks from well-known Trump supporters, including members of the Trump family, outspoken conservatives and everyday Americans who campaign officials say have been helped by Trump’s policies.

First lady Melania Trump will speak Tuesday from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8c96b29080281470cf6a5ae06a62b81d">the Rose Garden</a>, Pence will appear from Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday and Trump will deliver his marquee acceptance speech on Thursday from the South Lawn before a crowd of supporters — blurring the lines between governing and campaigning yet again.

Kan. GOP Chair casts votes; Trump nominated to face Biden

SALINE COUNTY –Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after a weekend altercation in Salina.

Just after 3 a.m. Saturday a witness told police Joseph Campbell, 35, Salina, drove a 2001 Ford Excursion into the parking lot of The Blind Pig, 2051 Market Place in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Campbell then exchanged words with a 38-year-old woman and then allegedly slapped the woman in the face and drove off, striking her with the vehicle, according Forrester.

The woman who allegedly was struck could not remember what happened and suffered a swollen right eye, severe road rash on her right knee, severe bruising and lacerations below her left knee, and a swollen left ankle, according to Forrester. EMS transported her to Salina Regional Health Center.

Officers located the Excursion in front of Campbell’s residence in the 1300 block of Gypsum in Salina. They also found a baggie of marijuana on the front seat of the vehicle, according to Forrester.

Officers arrested Campbell was arrested on requested charges of Aggravated battery, Possession of marijuana and Possession of drug paraphernalia

Police: Kan. man arrested after he allegedly hit woman with SUV

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just before 5:00 p.m. Thursday, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of SW Van Buren Street in Topeka for a registration violation, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.&nbsp; Deputies located a loaded handgun and methamphetamine.&nbsp;

Deputies arrested the driver, Frank J. Robinson, 44, of Topeka, on requested charges of aggravated criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and driving while suspended.

The passenger, Lori A. Hause, 44, of Topeka, was on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Stallbaumer.

CHICAGO (AP) — An inmate suffered “extreme pain” as he received a dose of pentobarbital during just the second federal execution following a 17-year lag, according to court filings by lawyers representing one of the inmates scheduled to be executed next.

The claim Wesley Purkey may have felt a sensation akin to drowning while immobilized but conscious is disputed by Department of Justice attorneys. They insist the first three lethal injections since 2003 were carried out without a hitch last month at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

This month’s filings were part of motions to halt the execution of Keith Nelson, convicted in the 1999 rape and strangulation of 10-year-old Pamela Butler. Prosecutors said he pulled her into his truck as she skated on rollerblades back to her Kansas home after buying herself cookies.

Nelson’s execution is set for Aug. 28. The execution of Lezmond Mitchell, the only Native American on federal death row, is scheduled for Aug. 26. His lawyers have made similar arguments.

The other inmates also twitched for several minutes before their breathing slowed, then stopped.But death-penalty foes say the paralyzing effects of pentobarbital may make it impossible for the condemned to grimace or thrash around, even if they are feeling excruciating pain.Q: WHY IS PENTOBARBITAL USED?A: Pentobarbital is a barbiturate that depresses the central nervous system and that, given in a high dosage, causes the heart to stop. It doesn’t have widespread medical uses, though is often used by veterinarians to anesthetize or euthanize animals.For three federal executions in the early 2000s, a cocktail of drugs was used: sodium thiopental, which has a similar affect as pentobarbital; pancuronium bromide, which paralyzes the body and potassium chloride, a drug that induces cardiac arrest.But pharmaceuticals later refused to allow those drugs to be used in executions, forcing the federal and many state governments to seek an alternative. Attorney General William Barr last year approved&nbsp;<a href="https://files.deathpenaltyinfo.org/documents/Federal-Execution-Protocol-Addendum-7-25-19.pdf" target="_blank">reworked execution protocols</a>&nbsp;that called for using pentobarbital alone.Q: WHAT ABOUT ALTERNATIVES?A: Nelson’s lawyers ideally want all executions suspended for good.
