WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) –&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of the Senate&nbsp;Committee on&nbsp;Commerce – Tuesday joined his colleagues in co-sponsoring the&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, according to a statement from Moran's office.

This legislation would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in new vehicles at no additional charge. Similar legislation has been introduced in the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;House&nbsp;of Representatives.&nbsp;

“AM radios connect rural communities with news, sports, weather and&nbsp;much more,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“In parts of the country with limited connectivity, AM radios are often the only means to notify residents of tornadoes, snow storms and other dangerous weather. This legislation will help make certain new vehicles are&nbsp;equipped with an AM radio,&nbsp;so that folks in every corner of the country can stay connected to broadcasting and local updates during emergencies.”

This legislation was introduced by Sens. The Army announced via social nedia that Fort Riley Garrison Commander,&nbsp; Col. Michael Foote, issued an update Tuesday afternoon&nbsp; on the efforts to recover from a Sunday night water main break. Repairs are underway on the broken pipe. Water pressure has been restored to the installation, but the boil water advisory issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment remains in effect. 

Residents with questions, concerns or issues can call the Corvias Neighborhood Center or 1-844-533-0456 after hours. Fort Riley will continue to provide updates via Facebook as they get more information or the situation changes.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory Monday for portions of Fort Riley. Residents in these areas are asked to boil water for drinking and cooking as well as continue to conserve water until further notice.

The water main that provides water to Historic Main Post, Marshall Army Airfield, Camp Funston, and Camp Whitside was damaged at 8:00 p.m. Sunday. All other areas of Fort Riley are not covered by this boil water notice. This impacts about 5,900 people living or working in those areas.

Crews have isolated the broken water main, and water was rerouted to restore water to Historic Main Post, Marshall Army Airfield, Camp Whitside, and Camp Funston.&nbsp;

Bottled water is being provided for residents at Corvias Leasing Office, 45 Barry Avenue, Historic Main Post. The Long Fitness Center, 8069 Normandy Drive, will be open Monday from 3 to 10 p.m. for Families living in affected neighborhoods to use for showering. Please bring your own towels.

Officials in Grandview Plaza have undertaken damage assessment following the big wind gusts that occurred Saturday. Fire Chief Jeremy Bramwell estimated that there was about $10,000 damage. There were not any injuries.

Four to five structures had trees land on top of them. That included a shed, car ports and houses. Trees also fell on streets and yards.

Just for Grandview Plaza residents only the City will open up a tree burn area at State and Witt from May 1 to May 31. This is for burning of tree limbs.

Republican candidates for elected office participated in a meet and greet this past weekend at Stacy's Restaurant in Grandview Plaza.

In the 65th District House&nbsp; race Jeff Underhill and Shawn Chauncey are seeking election.&nbsp;

Jeff Underhill said he is running for reelection to the House to keep representing the people of Junction City and the 65th District. "Over the past two years we've been able to get some things done on the tax side and different things." " Underhill added that he is also looking forward to trying to continue that. He serves both in the House and also on the Junction City Commission.

Shawn Chauncey is running for the 65th District House seat. " I think it's hard for the citizens to get adequate representation when you hold two specific positions that are both public servants. He also called for better education for youth and an understanding of better life skills including money and the basic necessities of life coming out of high school.&nbsp;

Keith Ascher said he will file for reelection to the Third District seat on the Geary County Commission.

Ascher said during his time on the commission they have tackled COVID-19 and worked to keep the doors of the hospital open. From here on he would like to address the EMS Services funding issue and the Detention Center, which he noted would be "a big project." Ascher will be seeking his third term on the county commission.

Bobby Miller has filed for election to the Third District seat on the county commission. Miller feels with approximately 20 years experience in appraiser work in Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee County he has a lot to offer Geary county and can give back to the community. Miller said gravel roads need a lot of attention and he wants to make sure tax dollars are being used in the best way possible. He was the Wabaunsee County appraiser for 11 years and worked for about 11 years on the appraiser's staff in Pottawatomie County.

"Volunteers and temporary workers play an essential role on Election Day in helping with a variety of election day operations and we need your help."

To become a poll worker individuals can get started by contacting their local election office (785-238-3912) Volunteers must complete training, be registered to vote (if of voting age), be an American citizen, at least 16 years old and willing to take an oath of office. Volunteers do get compensation for their time.

MANHATTAN - Early on Sunday, April 28th, Riley County Police Officers patrolling Aggieville in the 1100 block of Moro Street heard a gunshot near where they were patrolling.

Just before 2:00 am, officers entered the walkway between 1101 and 1109 Moro Street, where they saw two vehicles leaving the area.

One vehicle drove speedily away from the area, while the other driver was quickly stopped without incident by RCPD officers.

Officers located a shell casing and quickly established a crime scene.&nbsp;

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, however, RCPD says there are no indications that the community as a whole has been targeted by this incident.&nbsp;

Anyone with information is asked to contact&nbsp;<a href="https://rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD requests information after shot fired in Aggieville on Sunday

<a>Tentatively planned on Thursday, May 2, the westbound I-70 on ramp at exit 301 and the westbound I-70 off ramp at exit 299 will be reopening as construction progresses for the pavement replacement project on I-70 in Junction City. The westbound on ramp at exit 299 and the westbound off ramp at exit 298 in Junction City will remain closed at this time.</a>

Traffic on westbound I-70 will be reduced to one lane in each direction from just west of mile marker 298 to just east of mile marker 299 and traffic on eastbound I-70 will be reduced to one lane in each direction from just west of mile marker 295 to just east of mile marker 299 while median crossovers carry one lane of westbound traffic through construction on the eastbound lanes in Junction City.

<a></a><a>In late June or July, when the project reaches the ramps at exit 296, KDOT and the City of Junction City will replace all pavement on the Washington Street roundabout.</a>

Phase Two is scheduled to be completed in November 2024. Phase Three is scheduled to begin in March 2025 and will replace the deteriorated pavement in the eastbound lanes. All phases of this project are to be completed by December 2025, weather permitting. Wildcat Construction Co. Inc. and Subsidiaries, of Wichita, is the prime contractor of this $30 million project.

They want to hear the public's insights on how the community can collectively address the health challenges of Geary County. Together, efforts can be made to work towards implementing impactful solutions and fostering a healthier community for everyone. 

This meeting will help prioritize the needs of the community from the stakeholder viewpoint as we move into the next cycle; the Community Health Improvement Plan.&nbsp;

She announced her thoughts following a recent meeting of area counties that she attended along with officials from Saline, Ottawa, Morris, Clay, Dickinson and Marion counties where challenges faced by the counties were discussed.

Giordano pointed to a 2014 comprehensive plan for Geary County that included mention of having a possible assistant administrator or administrator. She noted that during the meeting Saline County asked whether Geary Count&nbsp; had an administrator. "They were very shocked that we did not and the commission was responsible for the day to day activities in the county that goes on and we're only here one day a week."

Giordano wants consider this topic. "I definitely want to look at possibly doing an assistant to where we have continuity in leadership and there is a sole person that is here Monday through Friday." The commission chair added that she does feel the governing body needs to be responsible for the bottom line on what occurs. "

Geary County Assistant Administrator topic surfaces

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating theft at Walmart in Manhattan.

Just before 1:30p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report of felony theft in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Walmart reported a man and woman duo shoplifted approximately $2,700 worth of merchandise via distraction.

Walmart reported a man and woman duo shoplifted approximately $2,700 worth of merchandise via distraction. RCPD: Suspects shoplifted $2,700 in merchandise

WASHINGTON —President Biden declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas and ordered Federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe winter storm from January 8 to January 16, 2024, according to a statement from the White House.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm in the counties of Butler, Chase, Cloud, Edwards, Ford, Geary, Gray, Hodgeman, Morris, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Shawnee, Stafford, Trego, and Wabaunsee.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;

Mr. DuWayne Tewes of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.&nbsp;

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Biden approves disaster declaration for Kansas for January winter storms

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Earlier this month, Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01), alongside U.S. Representatives Jodey Arrington (TX-19) and August Pfluger (TX-11), led their colleagues in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval to nullify the Biden Administration’s final rule on oil and natural gas methane emissions regulations. 

"The administration continues this war on fossil fuels and biofuels, as well," Mann said. "Really, all things liquid fuels. They do that a lot of different ways. The most recent effort now is the EPA, with yet another regulation that would force monitoring of certain methane gas emissions from certain plants, certain oil and gas producers. The end of the day though, they are doing this in an effort to try to shut them down."

There is also currently a pause on&nbsp;approvals of new liquified natural gas (LNG) export projects. Mann doesn't think that's a good idea, either.

"In our country and in our state, we can produce a lot of natural gas," Mann said. "We have tremendous reserves. We ought to be using those, exporting those, benefitting from that, instead of the administration stepping in."

In a period where Russia and Iran are still <a href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/the-axis-of-evasion-behind-chinas-oil-trade-with-iran-and-russia/">selling oil to China, despite U.S. sanctions</a>, these moves appear to be allowing those powers to fill in a market where the U.S. could conceivably be competitive, especially with Brent Crude above $89 a barrel as of Saturday.

"Don't forget, the administration chose last year to unfreeze around $6 billion of Iranian assets," Mann said. "You look up and a few months later we have this horrible attack from Hamas on Israel on October 7 of last year. Then, we have things like what we've witnessed here this year, with Iran directly attacking Israel. We need to make it really tough on the Iranians. Part of that is having a robust oil supply and oil production here in our country."

China has imported up to 1.5 billion barrels of oil from Iran as of February 2024.

Mann pushing back against 'war on fossil fuels'

School officials confirm that the recent Saint Francis Xavier School Auction raised $116,000.

Preschool and Kindergarten Roundup is scheduled from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the school.

St. Xavier will be in session PreK-12 for the 2024-25 school year and are working to increase revenue in different ways to continue as a PreK-12th grade school for years to come.

Freedom Fest 2024 lineup is announced

This past week has been one of changes for City staff. Finance Director Lindsay Miller made the decision to leave her roll with the City and accept a similar position with another agency in this region. Lindsay had served in this roll for nearly 6 years and was a major link in our lead administrative staff. Naturally financial practices are of extreme importance to any business or city, but as Junction City continues to work to move from what once was a great financial hole to one of more stability the importance is magnified. We talk about the amount of General Obligation Debt that has been retired and look forward to the next 3 years when debt payments are greatly reduced, but the major improvement has been the cash balances of the City funds has increased. This financial stability is of the utmost importance. With Lindsay’s leadership the City has improved in many financial practices and her efforts will benefit the next person that will be named in the near future to assume this roll.

City Treasurer Juliana Tobon will leave her position as City Treasurer next week. Juliana first worked as an Administrative Assistant when her husband John was transferred to Fort Riley. She is now moving on as they will be moving to Korea as he continues to serve our Country. Juliana is a native of the Country of Columbia and came to us with a strong business and financial background. A new City Treasurer has been hired and will begin on May 20.

On the incoming side, Kirt Nichols was named the new Police Chief and Cory Odell was named as the Assistant Chief. Chief

Nichols has a storied history of over 33 years serving the Department with the last four as Captain of Operations. Assistant Chief Odell has served Junction City for 15 years and has risen up through the ranks. The Assistant Chief position was resurrected after a number of years to provide more leadership in the Department. Since there are now two Captain positions available there will be some restructuring in the Department under Chief Nichols guidance.

Yes, there have been some concerns in the Police Department that have been addressed over the last few weeks. After hearing concerns regarding potential concerns with the City’s Anti-harassment Policy was being followed we worked with the Attorney the City engages with for employee matters to provide guidance in the matter. An investigative process was undertaken, and issues were addressed. At no time was there any indication of any criminal activities. Simply there was a need to provide a proper workplace environment.

Yes, we get criticized for not telling the everyone about every detail. No doubt the Department’s mission is to serve the community in a professional manner and yes tax dollars are used to pay for the operation. However, like anyone else, public employees, from City to County or School District are people who have certain rights, and these matters are confidential and must be treated in that manner.

This past week, a local media member wrote about concerns he had heard from an anonymous source and basically said it was literally Someone who knew Someone who knew Someone. This entire process was to address concerns and we did so in the most professional way possible and the end result is that no one has been placed at risk and needed actions were taken. This simply would not be allowed. The Police Department and myself stand behind our actions and assure you the matter was handled in a proper manner. I will not battle anyone who is willing to use an anonymous source.

Yes, the years City employees, as well as other public or private employees no longer work for their business or agency. Public employees are scrutinized by the public and even though actions must be taken at times, these employees have rights and sometimes those who were initially part of the process were

found to not be an issue or a concern. They deserve that right and that privacy. Likewise, those who had workplace concerns must be protected as well. I will always stand behind that regardless what someone believes. In the case of the City, we value the employees and their rights to a good work environment and will take the actions needed to do so. In this case, this has occurred.

I am extremely confident that under the leadership of Chief Nichols and Assistant Chief Odell, this department will move forward and continue to fulfill their mission to Serve and Protect.

City Manager issues his 515 Report

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Saturday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Navjodh&nbsp;Singh, 34, Sacramento, California,&nbsp; was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Chapman. The&nbsp; driver changed lanes to avoid a downed tree limb on the highway. The wind blew semi over. 

EMS transported Singh to&nbsp;Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP. The accident blocked traffic for a considerable about of time Saturday afternoon.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A semi involved in an accident eastbound on Interstate 70 at Chapman is blocking traffic.&nbsp; The accident occurred just before 2:30p.m. Saturday.

Driver hospitalized after wind blows semi over on Interstate 70

The Buffalo Soldier Monument was the site for a Black History Trail dedication Saturday in Junction City. It is one of many locations on the trail.

Interviewer, author, historian and co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Phil Dixon served as guest speaker while Jim Sands was the emcee. Members of city and county commissions were in attendance along with supporters of the Buffalo Soldiers from the Fort Leavenworth area and others from the Junction City community.

The nearby Pawnee Park where the Buffalo Soldiers were housed, and the 18th Street USO that they also used&nbsp; were also part of the Dedication activities.

Th Black History Trail, with insightful signs and markers, offers a journey, exploring the accomplishments, challenges, and often overlooked legacies of the Buffalo Soldiers.&nbsp;

Buffalo Soldiers were United States Army regiments composed primarily of African Americans, initially formed during the 19th century to serve on the American frontier.

The Northeast Kansas Regional Notification System provided information that east bound I-70 was closed late Saturday afternoon from mile marker 313 to mile marker 320 due to multiple semis turned over.

Grandview Plaza Fire Chief Jeremy Bramwell confirmed that as of 8 p.m. Saturday streets in Grandview Plaza were cleared. There were not any injuries but one tree went through the roof of a house in two spots. Electric service was restored.

More damage assessment will be done Monday.

Wind gusts cause problems

DICKINSON COUNTY—A Kansas man injured in an accident during a police chase that occurred just after 11:30a.m. Friday in Dickinson County is out of the hospital and in jail.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Junction City Police and Chapman Police were in pursuit of a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by&nbsp;Jordan David Rhynes, 28, Fort RIley, on Rain Road near 2900 Avenue just south of Kansas 18.

The motorcycle struck a Chapman Police Department 2020 Dodge&nbsp; Durango driven by&nbsp;James Samuel Reynolds, 45, Chapman.

EMS transported Rhynes to Stormont Vail in Junction City. Reynolds was not injured.&nbsp; Rhynes was booked into jail just before 6p.m. Friday on requested charges of reckless driving, maximum speed limits and flee or attempt to elude, according to online jail records.

The First Infantry Division Museum at Fort Riley is officially open following a ribbon-cutting on Friday afternoon. The museum has been under construction since 2018.&nbsp;

Dr. Bob Smith, Director of Museums at Fort Riley, spoke to the crowd and stated the process in total, from the beginning of planning stages to completion, has taken nearly 15 years. When thanking his staff and everyone involved with the process, Smith said, "We accomplished our mission, my sincere thanks and appreciation, Duty First."

Major General John V.&nbsp;Meyer,&nbsp;III was another speaker at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He explained the history of the First Infantry Division and the many battles they have fought throughout their 107-year history.&nbsp;

Major General Meyer stated that he is frequently asked, "Why do we have army museums?" Major General Meyer said, "There are 13,578 reasons why. Those are the names on the monument that I will rededicate next month at the White House in Washington D.C," he said.

Present at the ceremony was Jim Sharp, a veteran of World War II with the First Infantry Division. Major General John V. Meyer, III, acknowledged the presence of Sharp and presented him with a World War II patch.

Following the ribbon-cutting, everyone in attendance was invited to tour the inside of the museum.&nbsp;

The First Infantry Division Museum is now open to the public year-round. Hours are Sundays, 12:00 p.m. -4:30 p.m., and Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.&nbsp;
