POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—One person died from injuries in an accident just after 8a.m. Tuesday in Pottawatomie County.

According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff, a 2006 Pontiac Solstice driven by 66-year-old Shirley Riegel of Oklahoma was southbound on Highway 99 at North Church Road in rural Westmoreland.

The driver lost control of the car. It overturned in the west ditch and came to rest on its roof. EMS transported Riegel and a passenger 74-year-old Marsa Chandler, also of Oklahoma, to Stormont Vail in Topeka where Chandler died.

&nbsp;The accident remains under investigation, according to the sheriff's office.

Geary County officials have announced the hiring of Raquel Cinco as the County’s new Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Raquel moved to Kansas in 2019 with her husband and son.&nbsp; They chose Kansas so their son could grow up near his grandparents. Grandpa is a retired big red one soldier who, like many other Ft. Riley veterans, decided to plant roots here.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cinco started her career in Geary County at Acorns Resort (2019-2022) in Milford primarily selling the Conference Center and then selling the entire resort for weddings, reunions and any other event possible. She then became the Director of Sales at the Courtyard by Marriot (now Sonesta Essential) and Geary County Convention Center from 2022-2025.&nbsp; Having sold both event center spaces in the county and sitting on the CVB advisory board for the entirety of that time, she felt it was the perfect next move in her career to take on the Director position for the CVB.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Cinco will take over her office the last week of February.

City prepares for the upcoming storm

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and partners around the nation today celebrated&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.eitc.irs.gov%2Feitc-central%2F50-years-of-earned-income-tax-credit/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/kcaeqUTQ4HKY3_JgnRcNJx9jprLXABUCemCrHxg7CbY=390">the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)</a>&nbsp;with the launch of this year’s EITC&nbsp;Awareness Day campaign.&nbsp;

The annual campaign, now in its 19th&nbsp;year, helps increase awareness among the millions of working Americans with a low-to-moderate income who are eligible for the EITC. The IRS estimates that roughly one in five eligible taxpayers miss out on claiming this valuable credit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EITC was signed into law on March 29, 1975. Through numerous legislative changes, the tax break has helped encourage work and lift many financially challenged families out of poverty.&nbsp;

As of December 2024, approximately 23 million workers and families had received about $64 billion total from the EITC, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fcredits-deductions%2Findividuals%2Fearned-income-tax-credit%2Fearned-income-tax-credit-statistics/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/fPes8U5UyuNgJ5UOzgBdyO-GbYKvjCrStwt8Kl1E2Ts=390">IRS statistics</a>. Eligible workers between the ages of 25 and 64 who have no dependents may receive up to $632 by claiming the EITC, while married but separated spouses who do not file a joint return may qualify for the EITC if they meet certain requirements.

Those with qualifying children can receive a maximum of $7,830 when claiming the EITC for tax year 2024, up from $7,430 in tax year 2023.

To get the EITC, workers must file a tax return and claim the credit on that return. They can file in a variety of ways, including by using:

• IRS Free File&nbsp;on IRS.gov.&nbsp;Qualified taxpayers can prepare and file federal income tax returns online for free using guided tax preparation software. IRS Free File also provides&nbsp;Fillable Forms&nbsp;free online for use by any taxpayer, regardless of income, who is comfortable preparing their own return. • Direct File.&nbsp;An option for eligible people in participating states to prepare and file their federal tax return online for free directly and securely with IRS. Taxpayers have access to live chat support from IRS staff. While Direct File doesn't prepare state returns, if someone lives in a participating state, Direct File guides taxpayers to a state-supported tool to prepare and file their state tax return for free. • A reputable tax professional.&nbsp;To help taxpayers&nbsp;avoid unscrupulous “ghost preparers,” the IRS offers&nbsp;tips for choosing a trustworthy tax professional, whether that’s a certified public accountant, Enrolled Agent, or a trusted person without a professional credential. Taxpayers can check whether someone is credentialed using the&nbsp;Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers, and find information on&nbsp;national tax professional groups&nbsp;at irs.gov. • Free tax preparation assistance.&nbsp;There are thousands of&nbsp;Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)&nbsp;sites across the country available to help workers eligible to claim the EITC. New this year: Duplicate dependents

Starting this filing season, the IRS will accept an e-filed return even if a dependent has already been claimed on a separate, previously filed return as long as the primary taxpayer on the second return includes a valid&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fidentity-theft-fraud-scams%2Fget-an-identity-protection-pin/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/_eZUgnGc9UESxRsdaecmhYxMoX6SaJKOSspHXsGD6Fk=390">Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)</a>.

Meanwhile, taxpayers who do not have IP PINs will have their e-filed returns rejected if one of their dependents has already been claimed by another taxpayer.

Note that the use of an IP PIN does not exempt taxpayers from receiving notices questioning their right to claim certain dependents.

Jeremie Myers has been promoted to the position of Public Works Administrator for Geary County. The hiring was confirmed by Geary County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher.

He started employment for Geary County Public Works Department in 2014 serving in the roles of Heavy Equipment Operator, Assistant Shop Supervisor, Shop Supervisor as well as the Assistant Administrator under the previous Public Works Administrator Corey Trumpp for the last three years.

County Commission hires a Public Works Director

On February 10, 2025 at approximately 9:40 hrs, 9-1-1 Dispatch received a call of a fire on the outside of a residence located in the 8300 block of South K-57 Highway. This is approximately 6 miles southeast of Junction City.

Geary County Fire along with assistance from Grandview Plaza Fire responded to the scene. A pre-connect hose line from the first arriving unit was used to knock down the fire on the outside of the residence. Upon arrival of additional units, entry was made into the residence where the rest of the fire was extinguished.

The fire was contained to a basement room and a upstairs room. There was extensive heat damage throughout the residence. There was no one home at the time of the fire.

A Geary County Fire Investigator along with a Kansas State Fire Marshal investigated the scene. The cause is being listed as undetermined with a probable electrical issue being the cause.

Geary County 4-H Club Day Results

TOPEKA, Kan. - The state is preparing for the worst as this week’s back-to-back winter storms could cover the state with snow, making travel treacherous and causing power outages.

With a pair of winter storms expected this week with the first arriving tonight into tomorrow and the second storm to pass through Wednesday into Thursday.

Over the weekend Governor Laura Kelly verbally declared a disaster emergency. This declaration will allow for the use of resources to provide state assistance.

RILEY COUNTY —A former Kansas State University basketball standout is out of jail after a weekend arrest in Manhattan.

Just after 5a.m. Sunday, police arrested 36-year-old Michael Beasley of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the Manhattan Regional Airport for marijuana possession, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report. Beasley posted the $750.00 bond and is no longer in custody.

Beasley returned to Manhattan for Saturday's Sunflower Showdown.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Ford F350 driven by Dawson H.&nbsp; Flahaven, 20, Sundance, Washington, was northbound on Kansas 9 Highway one and one half miles north of Palmer.

The driver&nbsp;pulled to the east shoulder to look at the vehicle. While he was outside of pickup, an unknown vehicle struck the driver with the passenger side mirror.

&nbsp;EMS transported Flahaven to the Clay County Medical Center.&nbsp; A teen passenger was not injured.&nbsp;

Winter is a “watch and see” season for Kansas wheat producers as their fall-planted stands wait in dormancy. Thanks to a combination of good stand establishment and moisture events, the coffee shop chatter remains optimistic thus far that this harvest will be better than the last, even as recent freezing temperatures threatened the crop with winterkill damage.&nbsp;

Richard Cott, who farms in north central Kansas, shared during the recent Kansas Wheat board meetings, that there is lots of hope, thanks to good stands established in the fall and more than a foot of snow that lay evenly on fields.&nbsp;

Still, it’s no secret to anyone who wandered outside, it got cold in Kansas from January 18 through January 21, with temperatures dropping as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit. According to an eUpdate from K-State Agronomy issued on January 23, air temperatures were low enough to cause leaf burn but soil temperatures at two inches down never dropped below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.&nbsp;

The crop was further protected from snow cover following winter storms on January 6. According to the eUpdate, just two to three inches of snow should be sufficient to insulate the wheat crop from the coldest temperatures.&nbsp;

John Hildebrand, near Stafford, reported receiving nearly a foot of snow that stuck around for days and had rain come on top. Stands look good in his area in central Kansas.&nbsp;

But even the crops left without a blanket of snow still had good stand establishment from moisture this fall, especially for fields planted early. In fact, some of these early-planted fields were considered “too big” going into dormancy. Armed with a large number of tillers and good root development, the crop was and is set up to withstand a Kansas winter.&nbsp;

Jason Ochs from Syracuse and Mike McClellan from Rooks County both shared that their early planted wheat, planted as early as September 15, might fall into that “too big” for winter category, but the stands are up across the board and look loads better than the past couple of years.&nbsp;

According to the eUpdate, “A well-developed crop with three to five tillers can handle air temperatures in the single digits fairly well. Over 60 percent of the Kansas wheat crop emerged by mid-October and likely falls in this category. However, soil temperatures in the single digits can cause significant damage and winterkill, especially to less developed crops, such as the fields that emerged after November (about 25 percent of the Kansas crop), which will be more sensitive to winterkill with higher temperature thresholds for damage.”

Late-planted fields without snow cover are the most susceptible to winterkill damage, and there are parts of the state that will need more moisture than anything else as the crop emerges from dormancy. Kyler Millershaski, who farms near Lakin in southwest Kansas, reported he had to redrill some wheat, but it doesn’t look “too terribly bad.” While the top layer of soil is still dry and rain totals are still counted in hundredths, the crop still looks better than the past couple of years.

In the monthly winter crop progress and condition report, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported winter wheat conditions with slight improvements from the month prior at 50 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 14 percent poor to very poor, as of the week ending February 2.&nbsp;

The true impact of the combined winter weather will not be seen until the crop comes out of dormancy, which K-State estimates will be in another 50 to 60 days. Until then, producers will continue to monitor fields and count the drops or flakes that fall into the rain gauge.&nbsp;

Winter homecoming candidates recognized at JCHS

The Topeka Hayden Wildcats swept Junction City on homecoming night at Blue Jay Event Center.

The Topeka Hayden Lady Wildcats jumped on the Junction City Lady Jays right from the opening tip and took a quick 18-0 lead. Junction City responded with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 18-6, but Hayden pulled away and led 23-9 at the end of the first quarter. 

The second quarter was all Hayden, as JC did not score, and the Lady Wildcats led 42-9 at the half. The third quarter was very similar, with JC only scoring two points, and trailing 53-11. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays showed some fight and continued to play with energy, but the Lady Wildcats beat JC 61-14. 

In the game, only three JC players scored. Morgan Nabus made two three-pointers for six points, Bella Pruitt scored five, and Breya Allen had three. 

With the loss, Junction City goes to 1-13 on the season. 

In a surprise upset, the Hayden Wildcats knocked off Junction City 64-55 on Friday night in JC. 

The Blue Jays won the opening tip and got off to a fast start, and senior Jayden Mears banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first quarter leading 22-15. 

The second quarter was all about the Wildcats outscoring JC 18-5. Similar to the end of the first quarter, JC's Jeremias Cruz banked in a three from the opposite wing to cut the Hayden lead down to 33-27 at the half. 

The third quarter featured several opportunities for JC to tie the game, or take the lead, but Hayden held onto a three-point lead at 46-43 going into the final quarter. 

The Wildcats hit clutch three-pointers and made free throws down the stretch, and beat the Blue Jays 64-55 on homecoming night. 

Junction City had four players in double-digits. Senior Larkin Turner led the way with 14 points, senior Ja'Twaan Williams had 12, senior Jeremias Cruz added 11, and junior Lovell Autry had 10. 

With the loss, the Blue Jays have lost five of their last six games and fall to 9-5 on the season. 

Next up for Junction City is hosting Emporia High on Tuesday night at Blue Jay Event Center.

Most nurses, doctors and other staff caring for military veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs are not eligible for the Trump administration's deferred resignation offer, according to an email sent Friday by VA leadership to staff.

Nurses had been among those who received the original offer, but their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nurses-military-veterans-affairs-trump-deferred-resignation-c6b6969c49038bf1359d6980cd1cae0d">unions had discouraged them</a>&nbsp;from accepting, saying an exodus would directly and immediately affect the care of its 9.1 million enrolled veterans.

The new email, which was reviewed by The Associated Press, included an attached letter from VA's human resources department and a spreadsheet with a list of more than 130 occupations labeled “VA EXEMPTION REQUESTS.”

“It seems like it's almost everyone,” said Mary-Jean Burke, a physical therapist and American Federation of Government Employees leader. "We are trying to figure out who is eligible."

The occupations the VA deemed ineligible for the offer range from laundry workers and cooks to nurses, pharmacists and physicians. Those eligible, according to the VA's letter, include full-time probationary employees and possibly some employees who were going to retire in 2025. “The rules are changing day to day," said Irma Westmoreland, a registered nurse who heads the Veterans Affairs unit for National Nurses United. “What we do know is that the VA is already dealing with a serious shortage of nurses and we would never abandon our veterans.”

A VA spokesperson said the agency worked closely with the White House and the Office of Personnel Management to identify the occupations that aren't eligible for the resignation program. “Exempting these occupations from the program will ensure VA continues providing mission-critical health care, benefits and memorial services to our nation’s veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors,” the spokesperson said.

On Thursday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the deferred resignation program, which was orchestrated by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/elon-musk">Trump adviser Elon Musk</a>. The judge ordered the Republican administration to extend the deadline until Monday.
