A Night With Skylar Thompson will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Goolsby's, 1212 Bluemont Ave., Ste. 130, in&nbsp;Manhattan. Proceeds will be donated to the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/support/thompsonfund.html" target="_blank">Thompson Family Cancer Research Fund</a>, which supports the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>. Organizer Phyllis Fitzgerald has announced that there will be a downtown Junction City spring cleanup project on Saturday, April 30th from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Volunteers can meet in the parking lot of Bella's at 605 North Washington.

Parking will be available in the city parking lot at 6th and Washington. Trash bags, water and gloves will be provided, along with some tools including rakes, trimmers, brooms and dustpans. If you have some tools you can bring those as well.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sex crime involving a teen in Manhattan.

Just after 5p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for unlawful transmission of a visual depiction of a child in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

It was reported an unknown suspect solicited pictures from a 14-year-old boy then demanded payment to not share the pictures. 

Due to the nature of the crime reported, police released no additional information.

One of the highlights of the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner was the presentation of a Quilt of Valor to Brian Coleman. He served 21 years in the Army, including 12 years at Fort Riley.

When she announced that Coleman would the quilt, the presenter Phyllis Fitzgerald said the goal of the Quilt of Valor Foundation is to honor veterans that have been touched by war, "with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. "

"Brian, it is our honor to provide a tangible reminder of our gratitude and appreciation of your service to the United States of America," said Fitzgerald.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) - Dispatchers are the calm voice on the other end of the phone call when an emergency arises.

Junction City Police Department has 9 full time dispatchers who share the responsibility of dispatching all emergency services across Geary County.

The dispatchers answer calls around the clock helping the caller on what may be that person’s worst day.

Dispatchers also collect as much information about the situation as possible, to help provide the best response to each situation.

“Try not to get frustrated with our dispatchers when they are asking you, you know, multiple questions, we’re trying to figure out what’s going on; where you’re at so we can get the help that you need to you. Most situations help has already been dispatched and they’re on their way.” Junction City Police Department, Director of Communications, Sharon Riley says.

The Dispatchers have received lunch from their supervisor, along small gifts, including breakfast and other goodies from partnering agencies and community members in appreciation of their work in helping keep the community safe.

On Thursday, police arrested 81-year-old Russell Peterson of Randolph, on a Riley County District Court Warrant on requested charges of&nbsp; Murder in the 2nd Degree; unintentional but reckless, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that just after 8:30a.m. Sunday July 25, a 2006 Volvo semi driven by Russell Peterson, 81, Randolph was eastbound on Greet Randolph Road one half mile north of Randolph.

&nbsp;The driver failed to stop at the stop sign at U.S. 77.&nbsp; The semi struck a northbound Acura driven by Adam Samuelson, 38, Randolph.&nbsp;

EMS transported Samuelson to Stormont Vail where he died.&nbsp;Peterson was not injured.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Thursday Peterson was issued a total bond of $100,000 and is not confined in the Riley County Jail, according to the RCPD.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Leasing or buying is often the debate that people have when deciding on their next vehicle to drive. Many in the agricultural community also enter arrangements to lease pastures, farm ground and – sometimes -- even cows, according to the experts at the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute. &nbsp;

“Whether it is leasing cows or pasture, it is important that the arrangement is fair and equitable for all parties involved,” said K-State agricultural economist Dustin Pendell on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2022/04/08/developing-bulls-and-heifers-bacterial-vaccine-efficacy-cow-leasing/" target="_blank">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast.&nbsp;

Pendell said there are three steps that cow-calf producers and land owners need to work though from a cost-standpoint prior to setting up an arrangement.

Regarding revenue, Pendell said those dollars also need to be shared on an agreed percentage basis. He pointed to the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.agmanager.info/" target="_blank">agmanager.info</a>&nbsp;website from K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics as a resource for how to set up these agreements. &nbsp;

In addition to a temporary leasing arrangement, veterinarian Bob Larson said that he has observed many successful lease-to-own arrangements in operations where there is a generational shift.&nbsp;

“If there is an older cattle producer who still has the land but wants to reduce the labor involved with cattle production, there are options to involve a younger cattle person who can provide the labor in exchange for an increasing ownership percentage of the cows over time,” Larson said. &nbsp;

Regardless of the arrangement, Pendell stressed the importance of putting the contract in writing.&nbsp;

“Spend the time upfront thinking through all the costs and incomes, including cull cow incomes, and then get everything documented,” he said. “If something happens down the line and you need to terminate the arrangement, you have it in writing and it is much easier than if it was a verbal agreement.”&nbsp;

Cattle Chat: Leasing Arrangements 

Geary County Agricultural Extension Agent Chuck Otte has set a Sept. 2nd retirement date. He came to Geary County on Feb. 1, 1982, and is one of only three ag agents to have served in that position in Geary County since Oct. of 1925. Paul Gwin served from Oct. 1925 to Oct. 1956 and Mike Stroud from Nov. 1956 to Dec. 1981.

Geary County Extension Council Executive Board Chair Verle Amthauer made the announcement that Otte would be retiring later this summer.

Otte was elected to serve as President of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents in 2007, and has continued to serve on various national committees since that time. He is well known for his expertise in identifying plants, insects and especially birds, and as a source of advice for farmers, gardeners and homeowners.&nbsp;

The Geary County Extension Council, along with K-State Research and Extension, will initiate a search for a new extension agent in late summer.&nbsp;

Every year the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce honors members of the community for their service. This year the Eldon L. Hoyle Economic Development award was presented to the Weary Davis law firm with Keith Henry accepting on behalf of the firm.&nbsp;

Sgt. First Class Ret. Brian Coleman received the Seitz Family Military Community Award. He remembered his late wife, Betty Coleman. "Eight March, 11:15 at night I lost my soulmate. " Coleman added that he wouldn't be there if it wasn't for her. He also noted that he was very humble.&nbsp;

Award presenter Phyllis Fitzgerald told the large audience at the Geary County Convention Center that Brian Coleman served 21 years in the Army, including 12 years at Fort Riley, and is a Past Commander of VFW Post 8773.&nbsp;

The Outstanding Citizenship Award went to Terry Butler, who has been instrumental in helping the new Junction City Main Street program get started, along with other community efforts.

The Business Excellence Award was presented to Jim Clark Chevrolet, with General Sales Manager Jarrod Leis accepting. "My coworkers, our employees, we don't come in and punch a clock every day. We're friends. "

Dr. Marche Fleming Randle, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at Wichita State University, served as the keynote speaker.&nbsp;

Chamber honors community members during annual dinner

MANHATTAN — Katie Sleichter, junior in political science,&nbsp;Clay Center, is Kansas State University’s 37th Truman scholar. Sleichter is receiving a 2022&nbsp;<a href="https://www.truman.gov/" target="_blank">Harry S. Truman scholarship</a>&nbsp;for her academic excellence, leadership and commitment to a career in public service. The Truman scholarship is a highly competitive national award that provides up to $30,000&nbsp;for graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government.&nbsp;According to the Truman Foundation, 58 scholarships were awarded this year from a candidate pool of 705 students nominated by 275 colleges and universities. "We wish to congratulate Katie on this tremendous honor," said President Richard Linton. "She joins a long line of K-State Truman scholars committed to public service. Katie's dedication to understanding global cooperation and food insecurity shows how K-Staters put our land-grant mission into action to advance the well-being of Kansas, the nation and the world. She represents the best of K-State, and we are so proud of her." Sleichter also is pursuing a secondary major in global food systems leadership at K-State. After graduation, she plans to earn a Master of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She wants to pursue a career in the foreign service as a political officer or a public diplomacy officer so that she can increase global cooperation on borderless issues. "Many of the issues that are facing the world, such as food security, climate change and the refugee crises, require collaboration between not only a variety of different organizations but also many countries," Sleichter said. "I believe that by studying foreign service at a graduate level, I will be better equipped to begin tackling issues such as these through increased global cooperation during my career."&nbsp; Sleichter grew up on a vegetable farm in rural Kansas, which has inspired her passion for addressing food insecurity and other global issues. Her family has lived in rural Kansas for more than a century. At K-State, Sleichter is a food security scholar, which is a leadership program for students interested in understanding food systems and challenging the way we think about food insecurity. She is involved in International Buddies and the Food Recovery Network and is a coordinator for International Service Teams. She has been selected into Blue Key Honor Society and will serve as the director of leadership programming for 2022-2023. She also has been involved in the Kansas State University Student Foundation, Student Governing Association as the campus culture director, Quest Freshman Honorary and West Hall governing board. She is a Hagan scholar, 4-H Key Award recipient, Borlaug scholar and Kansas honors scholar. She has received an FFA state degree and an animal science academic achievement award. Sleichter is the daughter of Jay and Linda Sleichter and is a 2019 graduate of Clay Center Community High School.&nbsp;

Sleichter is receiving a 2022&nbsp;<a href="https://www.truman.gov/" target="_blank">Harry S. Truman scholarship</a>&nbsp;for her academic excellence, leadership and commitment to a career in public service. The Truman scholarship is a highly competitive national award that provides up to $30,000&nbsp;for graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government.&nbsp;According to the Truman Foundation, 58 scholarships were awarded this year from a candidate pool of 705 students nominated by 275 colleges and universities. "We wish to congratulate Katie on this tremendous honor," said President Richard Linton. "She joins a long line of K-State Truman scholars committed to public service. Katie's dedication to understanding global cooperation and food insecurity shows how K-Staters put our land-grant mission into action to advance the well-being of Kansas, the nation and the world. She represents the best of K-State, and we are so proud of her." Sleichter also is pursuing a secondary major in global food systems leadership at K-State. After graduation, she plans to earn a Master of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She wants to pursue a career in the foreign service as a political officer or a public diplomacy officer so that she can increase global cooperation on borderless issues. "Many of the issues that are facing the world, such as food security, climate change and the refugee crises, require collaboration between not only a variety of different organizations but also many countries," Sleichter said. "I believe that by studying foreign service at a graduate level, I will be better equipped to begin tackling issues such as these through increased global cooperation during my career."&nbsp; Sleichter grew up on a vegetable farm in rural Kansas, which has inspired her passion for addressing food insecurity and other global issues. Her family has lived in rural Kansas for more than a century. At K-State, Sleichter is a food security scholar, which is a leadership program for students interested in understanding food systems and challenging the way we think about food insecurity. She is involved in International Buddies and the Food Recovery Network and is a coordinator for International Service Teams. She has been selected into Blue Key Honor Society and will serve as the director of leadership programming for 2022-2023. She also has been involved in the Kansas State University Student Foundation, Student Governing Association as the campus culture director, Quest Freshman Honorary and West Hall governing board. She is a Hagan scholar, 4-H Key Award recipient, Borlaug scholar and Kansas honors scholar. She has received an FFA state degree and an animal science academic achievement award. Sleichter is the daughter of Jay and Linda Sleichter and is a 2019 graduate of Clay Center Community High School.&nbsp;

Newest K-State Truman scholar aspires to advance international cooperation

Regional cooperation in the area of economic development and growth received the attention of the EDC board in Junction City on Thursday. EDC Director Mickey Fornaro-Dean recently met with Manhattan Chamber leader Jason Smith to talk about doing a better job of working together regionally.

She noted that building trust by finding a common ground and recognizing that each of the counties, Geary, Riley and Pottawatomie all have their individual strengths were topics. Playing off of those strengths were would help grow the region and make it stronger.

"I just think it's important that we have a better relationship and a better line of communication between our region. Not that we don't but I just want to continue to work to help strengthen that," said Fornaro-Dean. " She added that she wants to ensure that growth in the corridor is supported in their communications.

Fornaro-Dean expects more meetings or discussions on what can be done or what areas can be worked on to benefit all of the region.&nbsp;

It was also noted EDC discussion that this area is moving closer to one economic unit or trade area.

--The Chamber of Commerce plans to host a luncheon this summer for area state and possibly federal legislative officials. A similar event was held last summer.

Evergy provides grant to I.C.A.R.E.

April 30th is the date for the Saint Xavier School auction at the Bradley Gym. That is annually the biggest fundraiser for the school.

Principal Shawn Augustine said its been tough in recent years to get the auction going back to normal due to the pandemic. Last year there was a smaller auction due to numbers and the amount of people that could be in the gymnasium. "So this year it's going to be really nice to have full capacity. " That full capacity in the gym would total 300 people.

"Our auction theme this year is exploring our faith and supporting Catholic Education, said Augustine. "That night is all about the school. Whatever is raised that evening all goes toward the school. "

Some of the activities on the 30th could also help with possible future renovation projects including HVAC for the Bradley Gym and remodeling of the locker rooms near the gymnasium.

Saint Xavier prepares for school auction

Michaela Self has been hired to serve as the new Director for the Junction City Main Street program. She will begin work on April 25th. "But I'll be attending a couple of meetings they have next week, as well as introducing myself to everybody at the Main Street open house."

Self is a graduate of Texas State University where she earned a degree in Marketing and Public Relations. "All through college while I was getting my degree I worked at a Main Street program in San Marcos, Texas. While there she started in an internship position and worked&nbsp; her way up to the assistant position. "

She has spent the past year working as a project manager for U.S. Stone Industries, which is based in Herington. Self is originally from Hutchinson, KS and later lived in Galveston, Texas where she attended high school before attending Texas State University.

Junction City Main Street will have a new director 

Kansas Department of Transportation officials have announced that they are&nbsp; progressing on work for the project realigning Old Milford Road and Old 77 Highway with U.S. 77 and they have closed Old Milford Road in Geary County.

Access to Old Milford Road from U.S. 77 is closed for realignment and safety improvements, with traffic following the signed detour via K-57.

Resurfacing and grading work for U.S. 77 will continue from just south of the U.S. 77/Old Milford Road junction and proceed north about 1.5 miles to the north U.S. 77/K-57 junction.

Ebert Construction Co. Inc. of Wamego is the prime contractor for this $10 million project and has scheduled Old Milford Road to reopen in July. The project work should be completed by March 2023, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp;

Realignment closes Old Milford Road in Geary County

This Saturday, April 16, the grass at Heritage Park, 6th and Jefferson, will be covered with thousands of candy-filled eggs. The Easter Egg-Stravaganza is a new event being offered for the children and youth of Junction City, said event organizer Will Ravenstein, assistant to the pastor at Junction City First United Methodist Church.

“These children have experienced so much hardship over the last two years,” he said. “We wanted to put a smile on their faces again and let the community rally behind them. That way they know we feel for them and all that they had to give up due to the Coronavirus.”

Ravenstein said, thanks to community support, the park will have more than 7,000 eggs divided up in the park by age groups.

“We are using Heritage Park’s natural boundaries as dividers for the different age groups,” he said. “We don’t want a 3-year-old to be out in the same field as a sixth grader. Plus, the parks boundaries also allow us to have a dedicated area for our youth that are restricted in movements. We will have an area dedicated to children and youth who are in wheelchairs and use crutches to get around. Baskets will be placed on hanging rods, so they can reach in and grab a few eggs.”

The event, which is hosted by Junction City First United Methodist Church has been advertised as a community event, to which Ravenstein thanks the support he has received.

“I’m so thankful for the community support,” he said. “We have received financial gifts, thousands of eggs and pieces of candy. This truly is an event put on by the community.”

Saturday’s event starts at 10 a.m. with activities, like face painting and seed planting, and information tables in the center of the park by the fountain with the egg hunt starting at 11 a.m.

ASE' will host&nbsp; their second annual Egg Hunt this Saturday from 1-6 p.m. at the 5th Street Park.&nbsp;

The schedule includes a meet and greet along with kid's games from 1-2 p.m., the Egg Hunt 2-3, free food 3-4, and raffle prizes from 4-6 p.m. Tickets for the raffle prizes can be purchased for $2.

House of Ruth has invited the Geary County community including organizations to participate in their 2022 Adopt a Room Drive for the Fresh Start Emergency Shelter at 136 West 3rd Street in Junction City. This event will be held on May 14th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Shelter provides temporary residence for homeless individuals and families.

Each person or organization that joins in this drive will be assisting the Shelter by providing such things as new beddings, curtains and rugs or other items for each room in the facility. Contributions will help provide people who are homeless in the community with a safe, clean place to stay during difficult times.&nbsp;

The goal of&nbsp; the shelter is to provide accommodation for people who have nowhere to sleep and are used to quickly deal with emergency situations such as adverse weather conditions or domestic abuse. Homeless people can experience barriers to self-care and personal hygiene, including limited access to clean showers, laundry and hand washing facilities.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating two teens after an incident involving a gun.

Just after 9:30p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault and criminal possession of a firearm in the 1200 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 14-year-old girl and 38-year-old woman reported a known 18-year-old woman pointed a gun at the victims. 

Ladashia Ransom, of Manhattan, was arrested in connection. She is being held on a bond of $21,000.&nbsp;

 Tommie Abernathy, 17, of Manhattan, was arrested in connection on a requested charge of offense of criminal carry of a weapon; concealed pistol/firearm on land/abode/business. Abernathy was booked through the juvenile intake facility, according to the RCPD.

Members of the NAACP are unhappy about the recent removal and reassignment of Merrier Tartt from the principal's post at Junction City High School. Dr. Crystal Davis spoke to the Board of Education. "The Junction City branch, 4035, of the NAACP, publicly expresses discontent regarding the unfair treatment of Mrs. Merrier Tartt, the African American principal at the Junction City High School who was abruptly removed from her position the week of March 21, 2022."

Davis said they intend to seek answers from the Board on how the matter can be "resolved in the interests of Tartt, the students and Junction City High School. ' Davis added that they will address items listed in a letter to the Board in a formal meeting with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston and the Board.

Davis called the information in the letter the beginning of a vital conversation. "The theme of diversity, equity and inclusion threads through every concern brought forward. " She added if the District and community value diversity intentional work has to be at the forefront of all decisions.

Davis said it is the intention of the NAACP to become involved at a greater level in the community in the committees and groups impacting the school district ranging from the community partner and site councils to the JCHS Booster Club, "and hopefully the recruitment and search committees as well as others."&nbsp;

Davis referred to the executive board of the NAACP, members at large from that organization and other community members in noting that there were concerns. A letter containing their concerns was sent to school officials, and Davis also noted that they had received a request from the superintendent for a meeting. She said that meeting will be scheduled immediately.
