The public tree lighting ceremony at Fort Riley was cancelled late Thursday to reduce risk of COVID transmission, according to a social media report from the Fort.

The tree will be lit; however, there is not going to be a public viewing availability on Thursday.

The Fort urged the public to feel free to view the tree throughout the season. "Thank you for your understanding and we wish you and your family a merry holiday season"

Manhattan —The Kansas Board of Regents named Dr.&nbsp;<a href="https://cals.ncsu.edu/about/administrative-team/dean-richard-linton/">Richard Linton</a>&nbsp;as the 15th president of Kansas State University during a special meeting Thursday morning.

Political leaders from across the state welcomed Linton, who&nbsp;served as the Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University since 2012, to his new role in Manhattan.

The Regents chose Dr. Linton after a committee-led search to identify the next president of K-State. The search process began after current President Richard Myers announced in May that he would retire at the end of 2021.

Just after 10:30a.m. on Wednesday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 3900 block of Rocky Ford Ave. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 72-year-old woman reported a known male suspect entered her house without permission and stole $200 in American Eagle quarters, checks, two FitBit watches, two pairs of sweat pants, a $25 Walmart gift card, a $50 Dillons gift card, a $100 Visa gift card and jewelry. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $585.

RCPD investigating alleged forgery at Manhattan bank

FORT RILEY, Kan. – Geary County Schools on Wednesday announced Susan Marshall, Fort Riley Middle School math and algebra teacher, and Bryan Scruggs, Seitz Elementary School academic specialist, as its nominees for Emporia State University’s 2022 Kansas Master Teacher Award.

The Kansas Master Teacher Award was established by Emporia State in 1954 and is annually presented to selected teachers who serve as exemplary, professional educators, according to the university’s website.

Marshall began her career as a math teacher in 1993, working in Georgia, Michigan, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas, later traveling to Kansas in 2009 and beginning her next chapter at Fort Riley Middle School. During this time, Marshall has served on the District Math Curriculum Task Force, Professional Development Council, Math Excellence Team, Building Leadership Team, Outreach Committee Leader, Building Advisory Council, and as a mentor for education students at Kansas State University. 

Bryan Scruggs has dedicated his entire career thus far to Geary County Schools, joining Ware Elementary School in 2005 as a kindergarten teacher. This year, Scruggs transitioned to an academic specialist position at Seitz Elementary School. Scruggs has also served as the 21st Century After School Program Site Coordinator for both Ware and Seitz, Kindergarten Steering Chair, Kindergarten Curriculum Task force member, Kansas State University Cooperating Teacher and has helped in the development of Kansas’ ASQ adoption.

Marshall and Scruggs will be recognized for their nominations at the Geary County Schools Board of Education meeting on Dec. 6. Emporia State will announce the 2022 Kansas Master Teacher Award recipients early next year.

According to his NC-State bio, Dr. Richard Linton earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in food science, and a Ph.D. in food science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.&nbsp;Prior to his role as dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University, Linton served as department chair of food science and technology at the Ohio State University (2011-2012), and as a faculty member of the Department of Food Science at Purdue University (1994-2011). While at Purdue, Linton was a founder and director of the Center for Food Safety Engineering and the associate director of agricultural research programs.

Linton’s research interests include modeling the growth and inactivation of foodborne pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella&nbsp;spp.) within different food systems, and, development of rapid detection technologies for biological and chemical foodborne hazards.&nbsp;

Throughout his career, Linton has worked with various segments of the food and agricultural industry, integrating applied research projects and outreach programs.&nbsp;His area of expertise is the development and implementation of food safety management programs, including Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point systems.&nbsp;He has helped several food manufacturers and retail food operations in the creation of adequate food safety and food quality management programs.&nbsp;In the classroom, Linton has led the instruction for graduate-level courses in food microbiology and undergraduate-level courses in food safety, food safety management, introductory food science, and leadership principles.

Linton has received several service awards.&nbsp;He and his colleagues were recognized as recipients of the United States Department of Agriculture Group Honor Award for Excellence.&nbsp;He received an honorary lifetime membership to the Indiana Environmental Health Association, the Purdue University Extension Award of Merit, the Purdue University Research Team Award, the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Team Award, and was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar.&nbsp;Nationally, he has been recognized by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) for his leadership in research and outreach programs with the Howard Macy Award and the Myron Solberg Award.&nbsp;In 2008, he was elected as an IFT Fellow.

During his 20-year academic career, Linton has published over 60 referred journal articles, 11 textbooks, and over 75 Extension publications.&nbsp;He has also presented over 250 invited talks at state, national, and international meetings and has received more than $15 million in research funding.

Since 2012, Linton has been serving as the dean of CALS at NC&nbsp;State.&nbsp;He leads a college of over 325 faculty in 12 different departments, over 2,500 undergraduate students, and nearly 750 graduate students.&nbsp;Under his direction, the college has developed a strategic plan that focuses on “building people, programs, and partnerships.&nbsp;Collaboration with industry and government is critical to the mission of the college and Linton’s dedication is demonstrated through the Plant Sciences Initiative and the Food Processing and Manufacturing Initiative, two initiatives that have the potential to create jobs, find solutions to global challenges in agriculture and foster support for local growers.

TOPEKA—The Kansas Board of Regents has announced a public meeting of the board on Thursday morning to vote on a new president for Kansas State University, according to a statement from K-State.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union in Manhattan. The doors open at 9:30 a.m. and face masks will be required.

Following the meeting, an informal reception will be held in the Main Ballroom of the Union from approximately 10:30 a.m. to noon. The K-State family is encouraged to attend.

In May, Richard Myers announced plans to retire.&nbsp; He has served the university as president since 2016.

SALINE COUNTY —A Kansas man was hospitalized after his car struck a train on Old Highway 40 in far eastern Saline County Thursday.

Just after 5:30a.m. Ray Snider, 67, of Abilene, was eastbound on Old Highway 40 in a 2006 Mercury Milan when the car struck a train that was stopped on the track approximately 300 feet east of N. Amos Road, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

Soldan said that although the crossing is marked, it does not have warning lights.

Snider suffered lacerations and back pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.

MANHATTAN—One person was injured in an accident just afater 11:30a.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.

The Riley County Police Department reported a 2001 Chevy Malibu driven by Norman Highfill of Manhattan, failed to yield at a stop sign on North 11th Street and struck a 2020 Honda Fit driven by Charlene Brownson, 71, of Manhattan.

EMS transported Brownson to Via Christi for treatment of head, neck and shoulder pain, according to the RCPD. Highfill was not injured.&nbsp;

Buhler, who earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from K-State in May 2020 and taught her first year during the COVID-19 pandemic, is the recipient of a College Football Playoff Foundation's Extra Yard for Teachers Award for her teaching and her dedication to her students during the pandemic. • College of Business Administration, 11:30 a.m. John D. Lageman, a retired senior vice president, sales and marketing, Deere &amp; Company, will be the speaker. There could be insurance benefits for some rural residents, said Emergency Management Director Garry Berges. "Right now anybody that lives out in the county, if they're within five miles of a recognized fire station by ISO, which is an insurance rating deal they get a reduction on their homeowner's. "

Berges said that type of fire station has a Class A pumper truck, and at the present only five of the nine rural county fire stations have that truck, meaning many residents are not covered by Class A pumper trucks. They're asking that the older one-bay stations be removed with new stations being built in their place. "Be a two-bay station, one to carry the brush truck that's in there." The second bay would hold a Class A pumper.&nbsp;

If approved, Berges noted that could save the taxpayers money because better stations that are better equipped would exist, and&nbsp; homeowners could save anywhere from $150 to $500 per year if they live within five miles of one of these stations. That could impact about 230 rural residents. Final action on the proposal has not yet occurred.

Cost estimate per station would be about $100,000. Again..... ARPA federal stimulus money would be used to cover that cost.

StoryWalk® JC is a program that allows families to take a walk and read a story at the same time. Downtown Junction City businesses have partnered with the library to help with this program by putting up pages of the story in their windows for patrons to read. StoryWalk JC Number 5 Begins Dec 3rd

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 32-year-old northeast Kansas man has pleaded guilty to participating in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. 

Mark Roger Rebegila, of St. Marys, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to a misdemeanor charge of parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol building. Several other charges were dropped. 

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 10. He is the third of eight Kansas residents charged in the Capitol riot to plead guilty. A federal affidavit says Rebegila told the FBI that he entered the Capitol after others had crashed the barriers. Prosecutors say he also took videos of himself inside the Capitol.

Geary County Extension Agent said this week that for the sixth month in a row area temperatures were above average with record highs being set late in the month. After normal rainfall in October and&nbsp; November provided only one measurable precipitation event.

The average daily high during November was 58.6, 4.3 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 38.8, 6.3 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 48.7, 5.3 degrees above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 75 on the 7th. The lowest temperature was 23 degrees on the 13th. 

There were three temperature records broken during the month. The high of 73 on the 23rd broke the old record of 71 set in 2017. The high of 74 on the 29th broke the old record of 71 set in 1975 and 1986. Additionally, the overnight low of 52 on the 23rd broke the old record high low temperature of 51 set in 2017 and 2020. The monthly mean temperature of 48.7 makes it the sixth warmest November on record. The hottest November on record was 1999 with a monthly mean temperature of 51.8. The coldest November on record was in 1985 with a monthly mean temperature of 35.2 degrees.

Average November rainfall is 1.42 inches as we head into our driest months of the year (November through February). There was one measurable rainfall event for the entire month which yielded 0.25 inches of precipitation at Milford Lake and 0.23 inches in Junction City. Year to date normal precipitation is 32.40 inches. Milford Lake, year to date, has received 24.84 inches and Junction City has received 29.53 inches. The driest November on record is a three way tie between 1954, 1966 and 1989 when no rain was recorded. The wettest November on record was in 1931 when 5.88 inches filled the rain gauges. Cold, gray clouds on the afternoon of November 12th did bring us a few snow flurries that melted as soon as they hit the ground. Long term average snowfall for November is 1 inch and average season to date snowfall is 1.1 inches. So far this season, those few snow flurries we saw on the 12th are the extent of the snowfall.

December brings us our shortest days of the year and the official start of winter with the winter solstice on December 21st. Average daily highs during December start the month at 46 and by New Year’s Eve are down to 39. Overnight lows also drop from 26 on the 1st to 20 on the 31st. Average daily highs don’t really start to increase until mid January. Average December precipitation is 1.17 inches and average snowfall for December is 3.7 inches. You probably shouldn’t get your hopes too high for a snowy Christmas as the odds of having snow on the ground for Christmas day is less than 25% according to the National Weather Service. With the Climate Prediction Center forecasting above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation for December, the odds this year are probably even lower than that!

The driest November on record is a three way tie between 1954, 1966 and 1989 when no rain was recorded. The wettest November on record was in 1931 when 5.88 inches filled the rain gauges. Cold, gray clouds on the afternoon of November 12th did bring us a few snow flurries that melted as soon as they hit the ground. Long term average snowfall for November is 1 inch and average season to date snowfall is 1.1 inches. So far this season, those few snow flurries we saw on the 12th are the extent of the snowfall. December brings us our shortest days of the year and the official start of winter with the winter solstice on December 21st. Average daily highs during December start the month at 46 and by New Year’s Eve are down to 39. Overnight lows also drop from 26 on the 1st to 20 on the 31st. Average daily highs don’t really start to increase until mid January. Average December precipitation is 1.17 inches and average snowfall for December is 3.7 inches. You probably shouldn’t get your hopes too high for a snowy Christmas as the odds of having snow on the ground for Christmas day is less than 25% according to the National Weather Service. With the Climate Prediction Center forecasting above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation for December, the odds this year are probably even lower than that!

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer in the 1000 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when a 79-year-old suspect identified as Stanley Edward Hoerman, 79, of Manhattan, threatened a 40-year-old male police officer with a gun.

Police arrested Hoerman on requested charges of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. Heorman was booked into jail on a bond of $5,000 and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD report.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

&nbsp; Riley County health officials have announced that a 69-year-old unvaccinated man from Riley County died November 25 after testing positive for COVID-19 on November 24. His passing represents the 65th COVID-related death in Riley County since the start of the pandemic.&nbsp; Riley County has identified 57 new COVID-19 cases and 73 additional recoveries since the last report on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. There are currently 100 active cases in Riley County. Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan is caring for eight COVID-positive patients at this time. Seven of the hospitalized patients are unvaccinated and four of the patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “Thankfully, the percent positive in Riley County continues to be low and I encourage anyone with symptoms to get a COVID test,” said Local Health Officer Julie Gibbs. “Testing is widely available and results come in quickly. Anyone who wants to get tested should contact the Health Department, call their medical provider, or visit KDHE’s drive-through testing site at Manhattan Town Center.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

There's one week remaining for Geary County Historical Society's Festival of Trees. Silent auction bidding will take place at the museum during open hours until Saturday December 4th at 3pm. Anyone interested in bidding on one of the 30 locally decorated Christmas items can stop into the museum at 530 N. Adams to bid.&nbsp;

Bidding will wrap up on Saturday December 4th with Santa's Sweet Shoppe. Holiday treats including cookies, candy, cupcakes and sweet breads will be on sale at the museum throughout the day. Special extended hours for the museum from 11-4pm will allow visitors extra time to purchase holiday treats, put in their final bids and tour the museum. 

All proceeds from the sweet sales and the Festival of Trees directly benefit the Historical Society.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Board members and C. L. Hoover Opera House Directors have signed the final papers for purchasing the property at 131 W. 7th that is located adjacent to the Opera House. This building expansion project will accommodate the rapidly growing youth programs and Opera House activities. 

Funds are being raised through grants and donations. Officials hope that that the renovation on the $1.75 million dollar project begins in late 2022. Interested donors to the project should contact the Opera House for details.

A 26-year-old man reported an unknown suspect broke into his car and stole military equipment. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,500. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD investigating reported theft after online purchase

Fort Riley’s annual holiday tree lighting ceremony takes place Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Ware Parade Field, 500 Huebner Road.

Highlights of the event include holiday caroling, entertainment by the 1st Infantry Division Band, refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus.&nbsp;Col. Paul Krattiger, 1st Infantry Division Chief of Staff, is scheduled to speak before the switch is flipped to light the tree, which stands in front of the Fort Riley garrison headquarters. Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus indoors following the tree lighting. Refreshments will be provided by USO Kansas, Fort Riley Center.

Operation Santa Claus will also be accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys in the $10 - $20 price range for children of Soldiers, E-5 and below. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

The event is open to the public. With construction beginning on the new Indoor Football practice facility and the Morgan Family Arena, parking for Men’s and Women’s basketball games at Bramlage Coliseum will be impacted starting with Wednesday’s game against UAlbany.

According to K-State Athletics fans who park on the east side of Bill Snyder Family Stadium, where the football practice facility is being constructed, will be required to enter Gate 8 off Kimball Avenue and directed south around the construction site to areas set aside as Reserved Parking for Ahearn Fund donors, ADA or VIP/General Admission. Once that area of the parking lot is filled, all other available parking will be to the north of the construction zone.

The new Morgan Family Arena for volleyball will be built on the site formerly known as “Cat Town” just to the north of the Brandeberry Indoor Complex along Jack Hartman Drive. When construction begins next week, Gate 1 will be closed and all traffic entering and exiting the West Lot off of College Avenue will be directed to enter at Gate 3, across from Ascension Via Christi Hospital.

Construction of these projects will impact basketball parking for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.
