Fort Riley issued a social media statement acknowledging the headache this can cause for the community and they are actively planning ways to reduce traffic chokepoints. Leaders at Fort Riley are working within the limitations of funding, weather and time to continue to improve the community. 

From July 28th to Aug 16th Trooper Access Control Point/Gate hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A pilot car will lead two-way traffic from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.:

Outbound traffic only towards Junction City will be available from 7:30 p.m. overnight through 9:30 a.m. the next day: reopened to two-way traffic.

Soldiers with the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division cased their unit’s colors once again July 26 as they prepare for a second deployment in support of Atlantic Resolve.

“It is a great privilege to aid in the preservation of peace by showcasing our Army’s ability to project readiness across the globe,” Col. Brian E. McCarthy, 1st ABCT commander said. “This brigade’s legacy of fighting and training alongside our European partners began in the fields of France during World War One. We are proud to uphold our dedication to a strong Europe and once again stand with our allies and partners.”

The 1st ABCT, 1st Infantry Division, will replace the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division as a regionally allocated force in Europe.

Earlier this month, elements of the unit along with over 3000 pieces of equipment arrived in Europe.

USD 475 officials have announced the arrival of the bronze Blue Jay at the new Junction City High School site. It has been moved from its' former location in front of the old high school to a site near the entrance in front of the new school at 1100 Blue Jay Way.

DICKINSON COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Sterling truck driven by&nbsp; Charles Rice, 50, Salina,&nbsp;was westbound on 1400 Avenue just east of Lindy. The truck traveled off the north edge of road into the north ditch and overturned. 

EMS transported Rice to the hospital in Salina. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Just after 8p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for domestic battery, criminal damage to property, aggravated endangering a child and aggravated domestic battery, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 28-year-old woman reported a 28-year-old male suspect strangled and struck her while holding a baby and also damaged an Apple Macbook Air computer. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,050. 

Police arrested Brandon Lee Gibson, 28, of Junction City on requested charges of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, criminal damage to property and aggravated endangering a child. Gibson is confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $10,000.

RILEY COUNTY—Authorities have identified a man who died in a Sunday crash in Riley County.

&nbsp;The driver failed to stop at the stop sign at U.S. 77.&nbsp; The semi struck a northbound Acura driven by Adam Samuelson, 38, Randolph.&nbsp;

EMS transported Samuelson to Stormont Vail where he died.&nbsp;Peterson was not injured. Samuelson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Minor injuries and heavy front end damage to the vehicle were reported.

Geary County Commissioners are expected to make some reductions in spending before approving a proposed 2022 county budget for publication in August. Commission Chair Trish Giordano confirmed as of now about $1.6 million remains to be cut. She said that would equate to about seven mills. "I have no intention of increasing the mill levy." Giordano indicated that the other members of the commission have similar sentiments.

"I would like to see the increases in each department and each entity that we've given money to and look at that. Because I think some departments have been neglected and suffered cuts while others have not so I would to take a look at that over the last five years."

Commissioners will hold a budget work session from 2-4 p.m. this Friday. There will be a public hearing on the proposed budget later, in August. Giordano noted that final approval of the spending plan must be completed in August.

As the ongoing battle with COVID-19 changes and Geary Community Hospital continues to see the number of patients surge, hospital officials are adjusting the visitation policy.

Effective immediately, patients seeking care in the Emergency Department will not be allowed to have any visitors. If a pediatric patient (under the age of 18) is seen in the Emergency Department, they are allowed one guardian.

Other visitor restrictions will continue to be in place.

--Patients on Med Surg and ICU will be allowed one visitor (selected by the patient) during their care. Visitors are allowed between 8 am and 8 pm.

--Labor and delivery patients in our Women’s Center will be allowed two visitors throughout their stay.

--Patients undergoing outpatient procedures (including same-day surgeries), testing and or medical appointments will be allowed one visitor during their care.

--Pediatric patients (under the age of 18) are allowed 2 visitors during their care.

At this time, no visitors will be allowed for patients receiving care for confirmed or suspected COVID-19 except for end-of-life situations or for patients who are unable to advocate for themselves.

🔹All visitors must be 18 years of age or older.

🔹Visitation hours are from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas State University professor with ADHD alleges in a lawsuit that he was discriminated against because of the condition, which can cause inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. 

Sanjoy Das, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, filed the lawsuit Friday in federal court. Das alleges in court documents that he requested reasonable work accommodations as allowed under the Americans with Disabilities Act, but was denied. 

He claimed the denial of accommodations and retaliation he experienced for complaining about discrimination led to a new anxiety disorder diagnosis and work-related stress.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) - A man who was injured in a Geary County crash after he fell asleep at the wheel was taken to an area hospital Sunday morning, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 10:11 a.m. Sunday on K-57 highway, about a mile northwest of Junction City.

According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, a silver 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck was eastbound on K-57 highway when the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

The pickup truck then left the roadway to the right.

The driver, identified as Logan L. DuPont, of Manhattan, was transported to Geary Community Hospital in Junction City by ambulance.

The pickup truck didn’t sustain any visible damage besides the airbags being deployed, the Geary County Sheriff’s Office said.

Driver injured after falling asleep at the wheel in Geary County crash

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to K-57 Highway mile marker 4 for a single vehicle injury accident at 10:11 a.m. Sunday. The Sheriff's Department reported that Logan L. DuPont, Manhattan, was traveling east on K-57 in a 2015 GMC Sierra when he fell asleep and left the roadway to the right.&nbsp;

DuPont complained of head and chest pain and was transported to Geary Community Hospital by ambulance.&nbsp;

Deputies responded at 10:20 a.m. Sunday to U.S. 77 Highway and East Lyons Creek Road for a single vehicle injury accident. Courtney Lavender, Edmond, OK, was traveling southbound in a 2008 Infinity G35 when the vehicle hydroplaned due to heavy rain. Lavender lost control of the vehicle and it left the roadway, rolling over. Lavender complained of mild pain and was cleared by medical personnel. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Deputies went to U.S. 77 Highway at mile marker 163 for a single vehicle injury accident with a deer. Samantha M. Blow, Milford, was traveling north in a 2006 Dodge Caravan when several deer entered the roadway and were struck by the vehicle. She reported minor pain and declined EMS transport. The vehicle sustained disabling damage.

Deputies responded to the intersection of U.S. 77 and K-57 for a two vehicle noninjury accident at 10:42 p.m. Saturday. Mary L. Leon, Junction City, was turning south on U.S. 77 in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu when the vehicle struck a 2007 GC Yukon driven by Tyree J. Holloway, Junction City, who was traveling east on K-57 Highway. The Chevrolet Malibu sustained disabling damage and the GMC Yukon sustained functional damage. No injuries were reported.

DuPont, Manhattan, was traveling east on K-57 in a 2015 GMC Sierra when he fell asleep and left the roadway to the right.&nbsp;DuPont complained of head and chest pain and was transported to Geary Community Hospital by ambulance.&nbsp;--Deputies responded at 10:20 a.m. Sunday to U.S. 77 Highway and East Lyons Creek Road for a single vehicle injury accident. Courtney Lavender, Edmond, OK, was traveling southbound in a 2008 Infinity G35 when the vehicle hydroplaned due to heavy rain. Lavender lost control of the vehicle and it left the roadway, rolling over. Lavender complained of mild pain and was cleared by medical personnel. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.---Deputies went to U.S. 77 Highway at mile marker 163 for a single vehicle injury accident with a deer. Samantha M. Blow, Milford, was traveling north in a 2006 Dodge Caravan when several deer entered the roadway and were struck by the vehicle. She reported minor pain and declined EMS transport. The vehicle sustained disabling damage.--Deputies responded to the intersection of U.S. 77 and K-57 for a two vehicle noninjury accident at 10:42 p.m. Saturday. Mary L. Leon, Junction City, was turning south on U.S. 77 in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu when the vehicle struck a 2007 GC Yukon driven by Tyree J. Holloway, Junction City, who was traveling east on K-57 Highway. The Chevrolet Malibu sustained disabling damage and the GMC Yukon sustained functional damage. No injuries were reported.

A 38-year-old woman and Frontier Property Management&nbsp; reported an unknown suspect shot a gun multiple times hitting a house and a car. 

No injuries were reported. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,500.

Kim Baldwin, McPherson&nbsp;County farmer A friend of mine recently asked when my family truly begins to enjoy summer. She asked this well-meaning question to help her figure out when we get to enjoy some rest and relaxation during the summer months. She has observed my family for many years and has recognized that while many others enjoy vacations during this time of the year, it seems as if my family does not get the “traditional” summer experience so many others do. &nbsp; Before I met and eventually married my husband, I lived in a town where I taught. As soon as I had wrapped up my lessons for the year, cleaned my classroom and submitted my final grades, my summer break began. My summer breaks consisted of a lot of cookouts with friends and family, a lot of time in a swimming pool, and a lot of travel. I had a lot of things to do during my breaks, and I generally kept a pretty busy schedule to ensure I’d soak up all of what summer offered. Many nights I’d usually fall asleep exhausted from a busy summer day and get a good, hard sleep before rising with the sun the next morning. &nbsp; When I look at what summers were like for me as a single teacher living in a small town compared to what my summers look like now on the farm, I can’t help but recognize that some things remain the same yet appear different. During wheat harvest, I still experience meals with friends and family — although what is generally grilled at home is then packaged up and hauled out to hungry people in a wheat field somewhere. I still enjoy meals with others while sitting in our lawn chairs, albeit the scenery and timeframes may look a little different. &nbsp; My time relaxing at the pool with friends has transitioned to water time with my kids. Pool time is now generally centered around our stock tank pool that sits in our front yard. It’s quite convenient for early morning or evening dips, and you don’t have to deal with crowds or admission fees. Sometimes the kids and I enjoy a trip to a local splash pad or enjoy time at our town’s public pool. In either of these scenarios, we all enjoy a little refreshing break from the summer heat. &nbsp; I also still get to travel during the summer months. Some days include unplanned short trips to a business in a nearby town to pick up irrigation or machine parts my husband needs. Unless the items are needed immediately, I usually have the kids put on their swimsuits under their clothes and pack some towels in the event we find a new community splash pad to enjoy. If we strike out with the splash pad on our parts runs, we’ll look for community parks or interesting things like murals to explore in these other communities. Sometimes, the kids and I can also sneak away for multiple days if schedules allow. &nbsp; As the summer continues and hectic, timely tasks on the farm like wheat harvest and planting have transitioned more into an autopilot mode of things like managing irrigation. We still take advantage of the daylight hours and generally still collapse into our beds nightly well after the lightening bugs fill the air. &nbsp; As summer continues, my family can begin to stray a bit further from the farm. We can enjoy a swimming pool at a hotel or a relaxing evening cookout together at home. We, no doubt, will still collapse into bed at night after exhausting days trying to take full advantage of all that the summer days allow us to absorb. And we will begin talking about what fun family trip we can plan for and enjoy some rest and relaxation — somewhere perhaps warm and sunny — in either January or February.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Following recent market conditions in favor of refinancing goals set by the Geary County Schools USD 475 Board of Education, as provided to district staff by Piper Sandler, the district acted to refinance and lock in new rates for the new Junction City High School bond debt. These new rates will result in an interest savings of $10.9 million.

Bond for the new facility was originally approved by voters in November of 2017 for $105 million. By the time the bid was out in 2019, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) adjusted the cost to build the facility from $105 million to $123 million.

The architectural design included a base bid package with multiple, individually priced alternates. The district secured competitive pricing for all the projects’ alternatives, prioritizing them so that the Board of Education could implement these alternates as money became available. Competitive bids, for all alternates, totaled over $150 million.

USD 475 will realize interest savings on new Junction City High School project

WICHITA – A significant increase in the time it is taking the U.S. State Department to process passports is forcing many travelers to postpone previously booked vacations. 

With that in mind, AAA is urging anyone planning or hoping to travel out of the United States this year or next to initiate the passport process now or risk having those plans derailed by the delays.

“At AAA, we are seeing travelers, sometimes entire families, that have been forced to cancel or postpone their trips because passport processing has taken longer than they anticipated,” said Matt Bert, travel advisor for AAA Kansas. “One of the first questions we are now asking our clients is about the passport status of all travelers.”

At this time, the State Department says passport application is taking more than four months (18 weeks). And, ‘expedited’ service may only shorten the wait to three months.

AAA travel advisors say passport processing times are&nbsp;three times as long as the average wait time prior to the pandemic. The&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9%2b3893-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=445311&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">State Department website</a>&nbsp;indicates the dramatic delays&nbsp;are the result of COVID-related issues and high demand.

“Some travelers with bookings&nbsp;this summer have already had to postpone until next year,” Bert added. “And, for those who are uninsured for such a change in plans, the cancellation is much more than an inconvenience. It’s a costly miscalculation.”

The passport delay issue is not just affecting those applying for new passports or renewing passports set to expire. AAA is reminding travelers that many countries now require the passport expiration date to be at least six months after the date of return travel so anyone planning travel through 2022 is strongly urged to begin the passport renewal process now.

There will also be childhood vaccines for all school age children, sports physicals for $20 or a donation of five canned goods and dental oral health screening.

All medical services will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
