August 9th Medicare Basics Seminar in Salina announced

Event organizers are well aware of the impact that speakers have for those attending their particular conference.

That’s why the committee for the upcoming Eucharistic Conference in Hays chose an A-list of speakers for the conference, which promises to deepen attendees’ understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.

The list of speakers is headlined by a dynamic young bishop and other popular clergy members from around the diocese and beyond.

The conference, sponsored by Fort Hays State University’s Comeau Catholic Campus Center, is scheduled for Aug. 9-10 on the FHSU campus.

Bishop Joseph Espaillat, at 47 years of age the youngest bishop in the United States, will serve as the keynote speaker twice—on Friday night’s opening session and again on Saturday morning.

Attendees will even have a third time to hear from Bishop Joseph as he will be the homilist for Saturday’s outdoor Mass set for 5:15 p.m. on the FHSU Quad.

One Hays woman was so invigorated with Bishop Joseph’s homily at the closing Mass of the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, last fall that she jumped at the chance for all her children to hear him.

Brenda Rose, who attended the NCYC with her oldest daughter, Hannah, will be attending a cousin’s wedding in Nebraska on Saturday.

When she learned that Bishop Joseph would be she signed up her entire family for Friday evening’s sessions at the Eucharistic Conference.

“I remember watching Bishop Joseph throughout Eucharistic Adoration at NCYC, and I had never seen a priest or bishop who came so alive as he led us in adoration. His energy was contagious,” Rose said. “We didn’t learn until later that he was a bishop, and we were captivated by him during his homily. It was like he was one us, speaking directly to us and telling us exactly what all of us as Catholics need to hear.”

Several clergy and parishioners from the Salina Diocese are attending this weekend’s National Eucharist Congress in Indianapolis, the first of its kind in 83 years.

Bill Meagher, director of youth ministry, religious education and family life for the Salina Diocese, said Bishop Gerald Vincke wanted to host a conference closer to home, so soon after they returned from NCYC, plans began for making that happen. And Bishop Gerald quickly added Bishop Joseph to the list of speakers.

Father Andy Hammeke, pastor of FHSU’s Catholic Campus Center and co-vocational director for the Salina Diocese, also had a desire to bring an opportunity like this to FHSU students.

“We are really grateful for Fr. Andy and the Fort Hays students for opening up this conference to everyone in the diocese,” Meagher said.

Fr. Andy said that the bishops of the United States “decided to put on the event (in Indianapolis) in an effort to bolster Eucharistic Devotion in our country.”

“Not everybody in our diocese was able to attend, so we are honored to host our own Eucharistic Conference on the campus of Fort Hays State University,” Fr. Andy said. “We hope this will be an opportunity for people from all over Kansas and the surrounding states to increase their devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist.”

The conference will begin with registration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Hall, followed by the opening session featuring Bishop Joseph in Sheridan’s Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The evening will conclude with Adoration Under the Stars in the FHSU Quad. The next morning will feature another outdoor session with a 7 a.m. rosary at the grotto on the campus of Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School.

Following Bishop Joseph’s keynote session at 8:45, a variety of breakout sessions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will cover topics such as Eucharist Adoration, understanding young people and leadership for teens, and our call to serve.

Bishop Vincke and Meagher want to point out that attending even parts of the conference will have an impact.

“Don’t let the fact that you can’t make it on Friday evening or must leave early on Saturday stop you from attending,” Meagher said. “We are excited to have you join us for whatever parts you can.”

They also stressed that anyone can attend the 5:15 p.m. Saturday Mass in the Quad.

“You do not need to register for the conference to participate in the closing Mass,” Meagher said. “Everyone is invited. You will just need to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.”

The Mass will be live streamed into Beach/Schmidt for those who have difficulty with heat or accessibility at the Quad.

“Things have become so confusing and uncertain in our world right now, and I think people are hungry for good, positive, direct messages,” Rose said. “They will get that here at this conference, and we are blessed to have this opportunity right here in our area.”

Father Gale Hammerschmidt will be joined by Sister Amy Marie Havlet as master of ceremonies.

Fr. Gale is well-known—and well-liked—around the state. He grew up in Hays and is now pastor at St. Isidore Parish on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan. Sr. Amy Marie is the vocation director for the Diocese of Lincoln.

The list of speakers also includes Bishop Gerald and Father Jarett Konrade, who served as pastor of St. Nicholas of Myra parish in Hays for several years and now is pastor of St. John the Baptist parish in Beloit. RILEY COUNTY —The cause of a fire at a duplex in Manhattan is under investigation.

Just before 1a.m. Sunday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 931 Connecticut Avenue, according to a media release.

First responders found a duplex with heavy fire showing from the rear of the residence. Fire companies extinguished the deck that was on fire, while other companies made an interior attack on the main body of fire and searched the residence. 

The fire was contained within 20 minutes. The occupants were not at home at the time of the fire.&nbsp; The occupants of 929 Connecticut Avenue had evacuated before the fire department's arrival. 

No injuries were reported.&nbsp;The building is a single-story residential duplex.&nbsp;The owner of 931 Connecticut Avenue is listed as Sean Luciano Schiazza of the same address.&nbsp;&nbsp;The owner of 929 Connecticut Avenue is listed as Ron and Tatiana Schwerdt of New Braunfels, Texas.

Loss is estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $30,000 of contents of 931 Connecticut Avenue and $2,000 damage to 929 Connecticut Avenue.

$180,000 damage after fire at duplex in Manhattan

For a fourth consecutive season the Junction City Brigade have won the championship of the Mid Plains League. In 10 innings Junction City defeated the Topeka Warhawks, 12-7, Saturday night in the capitol city to claim the Cowdin Cup.

The win allowed the Brigade to win the Cowdin Cup championship series two games to none.

This was the fourth consecutive league title for Junction City and the eighth overall.

Grant Avenue clean up was the focus of efforts for local residents on Saturday in Junction City.

The coordinator Phyllis Fitzgerald said city and county leaders, other community members, Parks and Recreation staff, plus some Fort Riley Soldiers, and friends from Manhattan all participated in the effort.

The clean&nbsp; up focused on the north half of Grant Avenue. Some work remains but a large area was cleaned up.

The clean up followed the recent announcement&nbsp; from Fort Riley that they planned to keep the Trooper Gate entrance to&nbsp; the Post closed indefinitely once construction there is completed. Traffic instead will be routed onto and off post via Grant Avenue 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Residents work to clean up Grant Avenue

The C. L. Hoover Opera House hosted the Kansas Historic Theatre Association for its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, July 24.

Members are pictured here along with staff and Opera House Board Members.

The Association meets quarterly around the state in the member venues. They enjoyed a tour of the Opera House and the renovation of the new building. The tour was followed by lunch and a business meeting.

Following the meeting, members who chose to make the trek enjoyed a tour of the Clocktower.

They enjoyed a tour of the Opera House and the renovation of the new building. The tour was followed by lunch and a business meeting.Following the meeting, members who chose to make the trek enjoyed a tour of the Clocktower.

Maj. Gen. Monte Rone told a Military Affairs Council Breakfast audience in Junction City this week that Fort Riley can't be a secret.

Rone noted that his concern is always the single soldiers finding opportunities to do things, "finding unique ways that we can take care of all our Soldiers, especially single soldiers." He told the audience that their help is needed.&nbsp;

Rone also stressed that overall priorities include taking care of the soldiers and their families, being disciplined and being trained.

On another subject the Combat Aviation Brigade is back from deployment.&nbsp;

Rone said he also loved serving as the commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley. "We're in a special situation here in central Kansas."

Geary County Free Fair Livestock and Project Auction Results

If you'd like to go to college, you can apply for free this fall.

Kansas Apply Free Days will be held on October 7-9, 2024.

During these three days, any Kansas resident, regardless of age or income can apply for free at any of the state's 7 public universities, 19 community colleges, 6 Technical colleges, and the 21 private member institutions of the Kansas Independent College Association.

2026 will be a busy year for the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley

There will be an effort to spruce up Grant Ave on the north side of Junction City.

Phyllis Fitzgerald is coordinating a volunteer cleanup on Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the boat dock / parking area near the Republican River on the north side of Junction City. The goal is to clean up the north half of Grant Ave.

The decision to develop a cleanup effort followed the announcement by Maj. Gen. Monte Rone that the Trooper Drive access control point will remain closed indefinitely. Traffic will be routed via Grant Ave. 24 hours, seven days a week.

On Wednesday, July 24, Junction City Police Department’s Assistant Chief of Police, Cory Odell met with the JC Breakfast Optimist Club members at Jim Clark’s Chevrolet showroom on Goldenbelt Boulevard. Cory grew up in a small town north of Corcordia, Kansas. His studies in college prepared him to be a band director until he did his student teaching. His internship as a music major helped him decide that teaching elementary students to play a band instrument was not a career he wanted to pursue.

Cory worked on a farm and became interested in criminal justice. He holds degrees from Kansas Wesleyan and the University of Cincinnati in that area of concentration.

His cousin is City Commissioner Rona Larson. She invited him to visit the Junction City Police Department and take a ride-along one evening. “That hooked me. I knew from that point that

I would make law enforcement my career”, he said. Since joining the department, Cory has held all positions except that of being a School Resource Officer. “ Most of my experience has been in investigations”, Cory added. He is also a court recognized expert on sex trafficking and sexual exploitation of children.

The Assistant Police Chief told the Optimist Club members that “some of the goals of the new administration is to do more community outreach; rotate shifts so that no one officer is locked into working only days or only nights and recruitment of officers”.

Establishing and maintaining positive relationships and involving community members in the interview process of captains and above for instance has been put in place. That process has had a positive impact on not only those being interviewed, but also the citizens and others who have been involved. He said “We used a business model for recent candidate interviews and included the JC Human Resources Department, a member of a civic organization, a representative from a local church, USD 475 and a retired person. None of these people had law enforcement experience. The second step in the process candidates interviewed with members from the KBI, Fort Riley, Riley County and the Abilene Police Departments and the final interviews will be conducted by the JCPD Police Chief in a one to one situation, Cory stated.
