DALLAS (S&amp;P Global Ratings) March 6, 2025--S&amp;P Global Ratings raised its long-term rating and underlying rating on Geary County's general obligation (GO) debt and on Geary County Public Building Commission (PBC) revenue bonds, issued for Geary County, to 'A+' from 'A' and removed the ratings from under criteria observation (UCO). The outlook is stable.

The ratings reflect the application of a "<a href="https://disclosure.spglobal.com/ratings/en/regulatory/article/-/view/sourceId/101604201" target="_blank">Methodology For Rating U.S. Governments</a>" criteria, published Sept. 9, 2024.

"The rating further reflects the county's economy, which is predominantly based in governmental services and manufacturing, as well as its stable financial performance and very strong reserves, albeit on a cash basis of accounting, and manageable debt profile," said S&amp;P Global Ratings credit analyst Karolina Morris.

The stable outlook reflects the expectation that the economy will remain relatively steady and that management will maintain strong budgetary flexibility and balanced operations, despite the cash-funding of capital projects.

They could lower the rating if the county's budgetary performance weakens, resulting in material draws on reserves.

All else equal, they could raise the rating if key economic indicators improve to levels that they consider more comparable with those of higher-rated peers.The story was reported by S &amp; P Global.

Geary County Commissioner Trish Giordano noted that the rating is a direct result of the County strengthening their financial policies and financial management.&nbsp;

Hershberger began his career with Finney County in 1978 before joining KDOT in 1980 as an Engineer in Training in Garden City. He then worked as the Harvey County Engineer for a year before returning to KDOT as the Construction Engineer in Marion. In 1989, he was promoted to his current position of Area Engineer in Clay Center.

Throughout his career with KDOT, he is proud to have constructed three roadways on new alignment including the U.S. 50 bypass around Garden City, the new alignment of U.S. 56 from Hillsboro to Marion and making K-18 a 4-lane highway from I-70 to Ogden. In addition, he has worked to reconstruct or rehabilitate I-70 in the area and on several asphalt, overlay or bridge projects across the region.

The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) will present the 10th annual Meet the Makers event Tuesday through Friday, March 18 through 21. Each day a local creator, crafter, or maker will present live demonstrations of their work from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the first-floor atrium of the Discovery Center. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the artists, ask questions, and see their work come to life.

Demonstrations will range from wood turning to wheel thrown and hand built and functional decorative pottery. Needle felting and monptype print making and collage are just some of the other exhibits.

&nbsp; Meet the Makers is free and open to the public. Those wanting to explore the exhibits beyond the atrium at the FHDC must pay the general admission fee. Some artists may have items&nbsp;for sale. Jackson Pilling, a senior at Junction City High School,  is the son of Peggy and Brad Wilson.  Jackson was recognized by the JC Breakfast Optimist Club for his academic success, leadership and participation in Cross Country and soccer.  He also plays ten different musical instruments.  Jackson will graduate in May and will continue his work as a salesperson for a solar panel company.

WASHINGTON —The&nbsp;House passed legislation Tuesday&nbsp;to avert a partial government shutdown and fund federal agencies through September.&nbsp;Republicans needed overwhelming support from their members to pass the funding measure, and they got it in the 217-213 House vote.&nbsp;

The GOP members of the Kansas congressional delegation voted with the majority.

On his social media account, Kansas First District congressman explains his vote in the support of the bill.

Kansas Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt's wrote,&nbsp;“Federal spending has grown unsustainably in recent years and has exploded since the pandemic. Our national debt is more than $36 trillion."

"I told Kansans that as their congressman, I will be part of the solution to this serious problem – and this bill is a small step in the right direction. This bill freezes federal spending slightly below current levels to prevent a costly government shutdown that would delay or derail the America First agenda that Kansans voted for by a large margin. Enacting this bill is important to make clear we are serious about reforming how Washington does business.”

In the Senate, the bill will need support from at least eight Democrats to get it to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump’s</a>&nbsp;desk. It’s one of the biggest legislative tests so far of the Republican president’s second term.

In moving the bill ahead despite the lack of buy-in from Democrats, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is essentially&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-spending-shutdown-house-senate-426823710920756447076d15077c33d7">daring them to oppose it</a>&nbsp;and risk a shutdown that would begin Saturday if lawmakers fail to act.

Kan. First District Rep. explains his vote for short term government funding bill

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a high speed chase in Morris County.

Just before midnight March 8, a sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop on U.S. 77 at mile post 137 for an alleged traffic violation, according to a media release from the Morris County Sheriff.

The driver, later identified as a juvenile, refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued. Geary County Sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers responded to assist. The vehicle avoided spike strips and attempted to exit off Interstate 70 through an east ditch, stuck a tree row and came to rest in an open field. Deputies found illegal drugs in the vehicle. The driver and a 27-year-old passenger identified as Jaquellin Demarquez Holland, 27, Wichita, were not injured.

Deputies arrested them. The teen driver is being held on requested charges that include flee or attempted to elude law enforcement, no proof of insurance and a number of other traffic violations.

Holland, who has a previous counterfeiting conviction, is being held on requested charges that include interference with law enforcement, possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or other stimulant and use/possess with intent to use-drug paraphernalia into human body.

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will host the "Year of the Warrior" kickoff event, a celebration of resilience, teamwork, and leadership within the ranks. This event will take place Friday, March 14, on the Fort Riley Confidence Course.

9:00 a.m. - Warrior Competition. Witness squads from each brigade engage in a thrilling obstacle course challenge. The competition will determine which unit possesses the most astounding warriors, showcasing their skill, determination, and camaraderie.

11:30 a.m. - Warrior Lunch. The morning will culminate with a Warrior Lunch, where we will honor the winners of the competition. The lunch will feature a ceremonial cake cutting.

The three-story limestone building boasts 110 windows, all which need extensive wood repair before being repainted. The repainting project will also cover soffits, gutters and fire escapes. 

Historical Society Executive Director Heather Hagedorn said the public is being invited by the Historical Society to "Adopt" a window for restoration. Window adoption option ranges from $150 for an attic window to $500 for ground floor windows and security bars. Individuals, businesses, and organizations are all encouraged to adopt a window.&nbsp; Windows can also be adopted as memorials. 

All sponsors will be listed on a plaque following the project completion and all donations are tax deductible.&nbsp;Located at 530 N. Adams, the 121-year-old high school building now serves as the Historical Society's primary museum building and houses three floors of exhibits along with artifact storage space.&nbsp; 

The Old Junction City High School, a registered historic property, first opened to JCHS students in 1904 before later serving as the Departmental School and school administration offices before being purchased and donated to the Historical Society by Fred and Dorothy Bramlage in 1982.&nbsp;

Geary County Commissioners are talking about the possibility of holding one night meeting per month.

The governing body discussed the topic Monday but has not taken any final action yet The issue will be on their meeting agenda again next week.

Chairman Keith Ascher wants to get feedback from community members and hear fromcounty deparment heads on the subject. Currently the regular meetings begin at 10 a.m. and extend into the early afternoon.

A night meeting could possibly allow people who cannot attend during the day to meet with the governing body during an evening session.

County talks about the possibility of a monthly night meeting

Sheriff Nate Boeckman reported to the Geary County Commission that the average population at the Geary County Detention Center between Feb.19 and March 14 totaled 92 inmates.

Boeckman said that the Department worked 10 accidents during that time. There were 172 traffic stops, 56 citations and 40 arrests. There were 710 total incidents, up from 70 in a previous report. Boeckman noted that the increase was probably because of warm weather.

On the housing of inmates Boeckman noted that the current rate charged to outside entities is $65 and that rate was set in 2009. He added that $65 doesn't cut it and the county would be in the red all day long. He doen't see them getting by without a charge of $95 or above.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 11:30a.m. Monday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 GMC Rockport driven by&nbsp;Courtney L. Waddell, 52, Auburn, was northbound at Buffalo Mound Road just south of Old Stone Church Road at the rail crossing. The driver failed to yield at the railroad crossing. An eastbound railroad maintenance vehicle struck the truck.&nbsp; After impact the truck caught fire.

&nbsp;EMS transported Waddell to Stormont Vail. There were no other injuries. Waddell was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

This event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.March 17 at the Church of the Covenant in Junction City. ( whilw supplies last ) Tyme Out Lounge will be providing the butter and sour cream while Wendy's will provide the chili.

2025 St. Patty's Day Potato Bar

The funeral on Friday for SSG Louis Jordan has been cancelled.&nbsp;

SSG Jordan's sister has been found and will be taking him home to Dallas where he will be laid to rest.

Many thanks for the amazing outpouring of support everyone has shown for this veteran over the last several days.

A veteran with no known family will be laid to rest on Friday March 14 in the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery in Manhattan.  

According to a Facebook post, SSG Louis Jordan will be laid to rest in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Manhattan. Obituary information states that Jordan died at his home in Manhattan on Feb. 19.&nbsp;

Flags will be placed at 10:15 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. 

The Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery is located at 5181 Wildcat Creek Road in Manhattan.
