MANHATTAN — Two Kansas State University students will receive special recognition at the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/">College of Business Administration</a>'s fall 2024 commencement ceremony and Senior Sendoff event.

The college's Outstanding Senior Award will be presented to Reese Kuzniakowski, bachelor's candidate in finance,&nbsp;Lee's Summit, Missouri, and the Resilient Senior Award will be presented to Marissa Cruz, bachelor's candidate in management,&nbsp;Junction City.&nbsp;Kuzniakowski is being recognized for outstanding academic performance and career development. In addition to being a top-performing finance major, his extensive work experience includes internships with leading financial institutions. He most recently served as an investment banking summer analyst at Goldman Sachs. Kuzniakowski also gained experience through roles including financial planning associate for StoryOne Family Office, private bank summer analyst at J.P. Morgan Chase and venture capital analyst intern with the University Venture Funds Crossroads. Kuzniakowski graduated from Lee's Summit West High School, and he's the son of Craig and Shauna Kuzniakowski.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Resilient Senior Award recognizes a business student who displayed resilience in the face of challenges. As the award winner, Cruz will have the honor of speaking at the senior breakfast before the commencement ceremonies. After years of planning and fundraising efforts aimed at creating a senior living campus in Junction City, Aging Well, a local non-profit organization, has made the difficult decision to disband. This decision follows a careful evaluation of multiple factors, including ongoing economic challenges and shifting community needs.

Aging Well was founded with the mission of promoting healthy aging and enhancing the well-being of seniors. Over the years, the organization made significant strides toward realizing its vision, thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners.

“We are deeply grateful for the tremendous support we’ve received from our community members, donors, and partners who helped us raise these essential funds,” said LaDonna Junghans and Duane Blythe, Co-chairs of the Aging Well Board of Directors. “Although it is with heavy hearts that we announce the dissolution of Aging Well, we are hopeful that our work will continue through the generous funds we are transferring to the Greater Geary Community Foundation.”

As part of the disbanding process, all remaining funds held by Aging Well will be donated to the Greater Geary Community Foundation, a respected local organization with a shared commitment to supporting community-based initiatives and enhancing the lives of residents. These funds will be used to support future projects and programs focused on serving Junction City and Geary County.

While Aging Well will no longer operate as an independent organization, the legacy of its work will live on, and the organization is thankful for the outpouring of support throughout its years of service.

Aging Well to Disband and Transition Funds to Greater Geary Community Foundation

Junction City High School junior, Abigail Paskow was recognized as the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s December Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Will and Kelly Paskow.

Abby is enrolled in the Science, Engineering and Health Academy at JCHS. She is involved in the JROTC program, Cross country, and track and is a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school Abby is involved with the First Christian Church as a volunteer to help with the Kindergarten through fifth grade Sunday School program.

LTC (R) Richard Hodgson, Senior Adult Instructor, at JCHS stated that “Abby is well rounded and is a pleasure to work with in the JROTC program. She is an outstanding student and will most likely end the school year as the first or second highest academic performer.”

Abby’s father shared with the Optimists that “Abigail is a person of character who does the right thing. He and Kelly are truly blessed to have her as their daughter.”

Abigail stated that she plans to study construction management following graduation from JCHS. Her interest in carpentry and construction grew from working with her father on projects and being a student in the carpentry class at school.

The Optimist Club’s facilitator of the Junior Optimist International (JOI) Club at Junction City High School, Ricardo Gutierrez; JCHS Staff Representative, Dana Wiegand, and JOI Club members received nominations from high school teachers and made the selection of Abigail to be the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s December Student of the Month. Abby received a $25.00 gift certificate from JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill and a certificate from the JC Breakfast Optimist Club.

The holidays became a bit brighter this season for families stationed at&nbsp; Fort Riley. Employees at Smithfield Foods’ in junction City hosted their own employee toy drive and collected more than 150 toys and games to benefit children at Fort Riley.

“The true spirit of the holidays lies in giving back and making the season brighter for our neighbors,” said Paul McLeod, Junction City plant manager for Smithfield Foods. “Smithfield is honored to give back to the military families who selflessly serve our country every day.”

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a series of vehicle burglaries in Manhattan have made an arrest.

Over the past two weeks, Riley County Police Department has responded to over 25 reported vehicle burglaries, according to the department activity report.

On Tuesday, police arrested 19-year-old Alexander Darnell of Manhattan in connection with some of these incidents. 

Darnell was arrested requested charges of vehicle theft ($1,500-$25,000), interference with an LEO, possession of opiate/opium/narcotic/ or certain stimulant x 2, burglary- vehicle, and use/possess with the intent to use drug paraphernalia. 

 Total bond was set at $19,000. Darnell was confined at the time of this report.

WASHINGTON, D.C.&nbsp;– U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Angus King (I-Maine) – members of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee&nbsp;–&nbsp;introduced the&nbsp;Precision Brain Health Research Act of 2024. It&nbsp;directs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other research partners to comprehensively study the impacts of repetitive low-level blast injuries on veterans’ mental health.

&nbsp;This bill would require VA to create a ten-year research plan to establish the effects of repetitive low-level blast injuries, where benchmarks must be reported to Congress, in order to develop further legislation for veterans who suffer with the effects of these repetitive blast exposures.

“Recent studies have tied low-level blasts, which servicemembers are exposed to during training and in combat, to high rates of brain and mental health conditions, as well as suicides,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran. "This legislation will help make certain veterans have the evidence-based health care and benefits they deserve, and I look forward to its passage.”

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges has announced that paperwork is being done for a 30-year loan to rebuild three rural fire stations.

Two older buildings dating back to the 1960's are included along with an addition to the station on Barr Road near I-70 milepost 303 exit where space will be added for more two more vehicles.

In other business there have been 100 fire calls this year compared to 120 a year ago at this time. There were six building fires with a damage total of $477,000. There have been 10 road or vehicle fires in 2024 compared to a normal average of four to five. The damage calculations on those fires this year totaled $278,000.

Junction City Main Street and the City of Junction City proudly unveiled the JC Arts Statue in its permanent home near the C.L. Hoover Opera House last Saturday while officially announcing the declaration of the Arts District.

Vice Mayor Ronna Larson read the official proclamation, marking this significant step forward in celebrating the arts in the community. The district now stands as a symbol of creative spirit and commitment to enhancing the downtown.

Base sponsors made the statue possible including C.L. Hoover Opera House, Junction City Little Theate,&nbsp; Junction City Little Theater Foundation,  Junction City Arts Council and Junction City Community Band. The R2B4 Foundation for sponsoring the lights that will illuminate the district for years to come.

There will be baked goods for a free will donation and and a craft area with suggested donations. Proceeds will support the volunteers with the Fire Department.&nbsp;

RCPD: 10 reported motor vehicle thefts in past 24-hours

The VA is launching a new outreach campaign to encourage all eligible Veterans to enroll in VA health care – including approximately 13,900 unenrolled Kansas Veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This campaign will include text messages and emails directly to Veterans, public service announcements, paid advertising, and events.

<a>VA is launching this campaign after reports of concerns from Veterans about health issues – including mental health challenges and thoughts of suicide – potentially related to repeated blasts and head trauma (low-level artillery blasts, IEDs, missile launches, heavy fire, and more).</a>&nbsp;Since the first reporting about these concerns, VA researchers have been urgently studying this matter to learn more about the potential health impacts of blast exposure on Veterans.&nbsp;

Veterans enrolled in VA can access specialty screenings and services to address any health issues related to blast exposure.&nbsp;Importantly, Veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and other specific locations are eligible for VA health care based on their deployments — they do not need to have any health conditions specifically associated with their service in order to be eligible for care.

While we continue to urgently conduct research into the impacts of blast exposure, VA and the entire Biden-Harris Administration encourage these Veterans – and all eligible Veterans – to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/health-care/how-to-apply/">apply for VA care today</a>. Veterans who use VA health care have better health outcomes than non-enrolled Veterans, VA hospitals are&nbsp;<a href="https://news.va.gov/press-room/va-health-care-outperforms-non-va-care-in-two-independent-nationwide-quality-and-patient-satisfaction-reviews/">dramatically outperforming non-VA hospitals,</a>&nbsp;and VA health care is often&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/health-care/copay-rates/">more affordable</a>&nbsp;than non-VA health care for Veterans. Additionally, 92% of&nbsp;Veteran patients currently report trusting VA outpatient health care – an all-time high.&nbsp;

“We take Veteran concerns about repeated blast exposure very seriously, and we are studying this matter urgently to learn more about potential health impacts,” said&nbsp;VA Secretary Denis McDonough.&nbsp;“While we do that, we don’t want Veterans to wait – they should enroll in VA health care today to get full access to primary care, mental health care, regular screenings, specialty care, and more. That’s what this outreach effort is all about: getting Veterans in our care, because Veterans who come to VA are proven to do better.”

“VA aims to be the best, most accessible, and most affordable health system in America for Veterans, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve that care as science and research tells us about new concerns,” said&nbsp;VA&nbsp;Under Secretary for Health Shereef Elnahal, M.D.&nbsp;“The more Veterans who enroll, the more we can learn about the impact of blast exposure – and the better care we can ultimately provide those who served.”

Earlier this year, VA made&nbsp;<a href="https://news.va.gov/press-room/veteran-toxins-hazards-serving-eligible-va/">all Veterans who were exposed to toxins and other hazards (and meet basic requirements) eligible to enroll directly in VA health care</a>&nbsp;– years earlier than called for by the PACT Act. This included all Veterans who served in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Global War on Terror, or any other combat zone after 9/11. Veterans who never deployed but were exposed to toxins or hazards while training or on active duty in the United States are also eligible to enroll. Additionally, Veterans who do not meet any of the above criteria can often still access VA health care by receiving VA disability benefits or based on income.

This new outreach effort is a part of the largest outreach campaign in VA history, which began when President Biden signed the PACT Act into law in 2022 and continues to this day. As a result of this campaign, more than 835,000 Veterans have enrolled in VA health care (a 37% increase over the previous period); more than 900,000 Veterans have upgraded their priority groups, making them eligible for health care with fewer copays (an all-time record); and more than 4.4 million Veterans and survivors have applied for disability compensation benefits (another all-time record). 

The campaign has been focused on bringing new Veterans to VA by sending millions of texts and emails, hosting thousands of events nationwide, launching new paid advertising campaigns, working with influencers and companies, and more.

Shop with a Cop enjoys another successful event

Geary County Commission Chair Trish Giordano feels the governing body should consider holding some meetings outside of normal business hours. During a recent Kansas Association of Counties meeting she heard some counties hold Town Hall meetings. Others hold meetings at night once a month. "Something we should look at "said Giordano. 

She also wants to continue holding a budget meeting at night, something done this year. " I definitely want to continue the budget hearing in the evening ." Giordano added she was pleased about the number of people that attended the evening session. Giordano also supports doing something with the City and Board of Education members in the form of a Town Hall.

Giordano spoke during the weekly Geary County Commission meeting on Monday.

Blue Jay football players receive All Centennial League Honors

Brian Field and Adam Geiger have been named Volunteers of the Year for the Geary County Rural Fire Department. They were recognized during the Department's annual banquet Sunday night.

Field and Geiger have served about one and a half years with the Department, although Field served an earlier stint for several years.

Volunteer firefighters are honored

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating an alleged aggravated assault involving a firearm.

Just after 5p.m. Friday, officers filed a report of aggravated assault in the 100 block of Fort Riley Boulevard, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 30-year-old woman reported a 20-year-old man brandished a rifle at her who was trying to merge onto the highway.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann believes the long term farm bill is going to get delayed again.

"That's what it's looking like," Mann said. "I'll tell you, I could not be more disappointed or frustrated. I've been to the floor of the House over 30 times urging other members of Congress to get serious about getting a five year Farm Bill done to lock in certainty for our producers. It looks like this is being made to punt yet again. Very frustrating. Not what I want."

The continuing resolution on discretionary spending needs to be dealt with in the next couple of weeks, but the farm bill will not be a part of that work.

"President Trump and his team are involved in the conversation because they're going to be impacted by however long this gets pushed into next year," Mann said. "It looks like the consensus or their desire is end of March, but we will see, those conversations are ongoing. Then really, you know, the question becomes, what is the plan for President Trump's first 100 days? What order does he want to tackle the many, many things to do to get this country back on track? How does government funding fit into that? All those things we'll take into consideration."

With Republican control of both houses and the presidency in January, there should be a change in emphasis next year.

"The election had consequences," Mann said. "The American people loud and clear, they said they want Donald Trump to be the President of the United States, and they are tired of business as usual in Washington. We need to get the train back on the track, so to speak. Republicans flipped the Senate. So 100 senators, that's a 53-47 vote margin in the House. Similar margins we've had, but with three folks from the House that have joined the administration, we'll have a one vote margin, looks like the first 100 days or so of the Congress."

It is important though, that both Ag committees will have Republicans with the gavel as a long term farm bill is worked out.

Downtown Junction City was the site for Hometown Christmas activities Saturday. They ranged from horse and carriage rides to o live music and dance performances.

Junction City Main Street served as a sponsoring organization.

Hometown Christmas is celebrated in Junction City

The Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team began their season Friday night in Atchison. The Blue Jays beat the Phoenix 74-51. 

After trailing early in the game 9-8, the Junction City Blue Jays went on a 33-6 run to end the first half and led the Phoenix 41-15 at halftime.

The Blue Jays suited up 13 players for the varsity roster, and all 13 played in the game. Nine of the 13 scored. Junction City was led in scoring by junior point guard Lovell Autry, who had 23 points. The only other Blue Jay in double figures was senior center Larkin Turner with 12 points.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 1-0 on the season, and Atchison falls to 0-1.

The Atchison Phoenix are led by head coach Pat Battle, who previously was the head coach at Junction City High School from 2011 to 2016. 

Junction City is back in action next weekend. The Blue Jays will play at Hays on Friday night and at Dodge City on Saturday.

&nbsp;Girls on the Run of the Flint Hills WILL host its annual 5K event with an extra special 10-Year Birthday Celebration on Sunday, December 8 at the K-State Office Park. This event is more than a race—it's a celebration of empowerment, inspiration, and community, showcasing the strength and determination of girls in the community.

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program for girls in 3rd to 8th grade. The 10-week program combines fun running games with dynamic discussions to teach life skills, foster confidence, build friendships, and inspire community service. The season culminates in a celebratory 5K event where participants and their supporters come together to honor their achievements and amplify each other’s Star Power.

This year’s event is open to the public, with all proceeds benefiting Girls on the Run of the Flint Hills. The route will take participants on a down-and-back course from Denison to Marlatt Avenue. Last season’s 5K brought together over 500 participants, including program participants, families, friends, and community members.

The registration cost will be $30 for adults, $15 for children 14 and under. It will include Include an event shirt and a custom 10-Year Birthday Medal.
