The free family event begins at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and will feature live music, crafts, kid's activities, prizes, and food.&nbsp;The first 50 people who arrive at the event will also receive school supplies.&nbsp;

The theme of the outreach event is N.A.SA. Needing A Savior Always.

The families of nearly 100,000 children in Kansas were potentially eligible for child care subsidies in 2020. Yet barely more than one in eight got the federal benefit designed to make child care more affordable.&nbsp;

That happened even as Kansas has been expanding its child care subsidy and has more room for families to apply.&nbsp;

The federal child care subsidy can be the difference between paying for child care and not being able to afford it, said Emily Barnes, education policy adviser with Kansas Action for Children. Families who get the benefits save hundreds of dollars a month and thousands per year.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.clasp.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/2024_Ineq.-Access-Factsheet_KS.pdf">A report</a>&nbsp;from the Center of Law and Social Policy found that families nationwide struggled to access child care support they were entitled to — only 14% of eligible families nationwide receive the benefit. In Kansas, about 12% likely to qualify got that help paying for child care.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dcf.ks.gov/services/ees/pages/child_care/childcaresubsidy.aspx">child care subsidy</a>&nbsp;offsets the sometimes-burdensome child care costs to a more reasonable number. Barnes said families often devote 20% of their income to child care.&nbsp;

“It’s a resource that’s available to us,” Barnes said. “We will see improvements when we utilize the resource to its best extent.”&nbsp;

But some providers don’t accept the subsidies because payments come in too slowly. Some families struggle to sort out the application process that triggers those payments, Barnes said.&nbsp;

And some families may simply not know they’re eligible for help.&nbsp;

Stephanie Schmit, director of child care and early education with the Center for Law and Social Policy, worked on the study.&nbsp;

She is frustrated that families nationwide are paying more out of pocket for care when they don’t have to, especially with child care costs so high.&nbsp;

“On the federal level, we need more money and better policy. And then at the state level, we need more money and better policy,” Schmit said. “It’s pretty straightforward.”&nbsp;

For starters, she said, the program could be&nbsp;<a href="https://thebeaconnews.org/stories/2024/01/22/kansas-business-child-care-tax-credit-goes-unused-2/">more widely publicized</a>&nbsp;and the application could be simpler. But those are small fixes, Schmit said, and child care access in general needs larger fixes.&nbsp;

People of color disproportionately need child care subsidies. In Kansas, Black children between birth and 13 years old are only 5% of the population but are 11% of the potentially eligible population. Hispanic/Latino children make up 19% of the population but 28% of eligible families.&nbsp;

Addressing those disparities is not simple.&nbsp;

Schmit wants to see more serious investment in child care. More money has been put into these programs, she said, but those funds haven’t kept up with inflation, which means fewer children are being helped.&nbsp;

In fiscal year 2020, Kansas spent $51 million to help just over 10,000 kids on average. In fiscal year 2024, the state spent $84.7 million to help an average of around 13,500 kids.&nbsp;

“We do not have a max caseload at this time and we have the capacity to serve more families,” a Kansas Department for Children and Families spokesperson said. “So we encourage families to apply to see if they’re eligible.”&nbsp;

In Kansas, Barnes has been lobbying lawmakers to expand the child care subsidy. The Child Care and Development Fund is federal money, but it is handed down to the states to divvy up. The subsidy does work but needs some improvements, she said.&nbsp;

One statewide survey said that families who get the federal money don’t always get enough to make child care affordable. And other families who make too much to qualify don’t make nearly enough to afford the thousands of dollars that monthly care can cost.&nbsp;

Barnes is hoping the next legislative session brings more substantial change, but she expects major reform is years down the road.&nbsp;

“We are at a place where robust investment in child care is the option that we can and should consider,” she said. “I would love to see that commitment to bold steps that support our families who are working very hard.”

Only 12% of eligible Kansas families signed up for programs to make child care cheaper

Due to sewage flooding the administrative offices at the Sheriff's Office we are not operating under normal circumstances. Several of our employees (warrants, civil process, offender registration) are working at other work stations, therefore calls to those specific offices are not being answered.

Please be patient as we do not know when normal operations will resume.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement have captured an aggravated assault suspect who skipped court.

Just after 6:30p.m. Monday, police arrested 25-year-old Jordan Prather,&nbsp; of Junction City in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

  Prather was arrested on a Riley County District court warrant for failure to appear. The original charge in this matter was for aggravated assault.

Prather remains jailed on a bond of $5,000.&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.1% in June. This is an increase from 2.9% in May and an increase from 2.6% in June 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 7,600 from May. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 2,200 over the month, while government increased by 5,400.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is up from 4.2 percent in May to 5 percent in June. The rate in Riley County is up from 3 percent to 4 percent in June. The rate in Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties is also up.&nbsp;

Since June 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 17,900. This change is due to an increase of 15,300 private sector jobs and an increase of 2,600 government jobs.

“In June 2024, the average hourly pay for private sector workers increased by 5.2% over the year reaching $30.61,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “With inflation slowing down, the actual purchasing power of wages in Kansas increased by 2.6% over the year, while the average number of hours worked stayed the same.”

Jobless rate continues to grow in Geary County

Each year, the Kansas Highway Patrol is charged with ensuring school buses are in working order before hitting the road. The KHP announced in a release that it will do the same this year.

Every July and August,&nbsp;KHP&nbsp;troopers partner with school districts across the state to check all school buses and ensure they are in proper working condition.

Troopers check the buses until the school session begins to ensure the vehicles will safely load, transport, and unload students. Troopers check the lights, emergency exits, tires, windshield wipers, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency spill kits.

“Our children are our future. We owe it to the family members and their children to make sure these kids arrive to and from their destinations safely,” said Captain Candice Breshears of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “By partnering with these school districts across Kansas, we can ensure that we are taking the proper steps to keep Kansas children safe.”

A decal is displayed in the lower driver’s side corner of the windshield for any bus or school vehicle passing inspection. Vehicles that do not comply with safety regulations cannot be used to transport students until all defects are corrected and a trooper re-checks the vehicle.

In 2023, the Patrol inspected 10,066 buses and other school vehicles for defects.

The Geary County Commission has approved a motion to accept a Junction City Commission offer for EMS and Ambulance fees. Commissioner Keith Ascher noted that the City has proposed $145,000 per month for 2024 fees. "My motion said up to $145,000&nbsp; per month. I feel like that we met in the middle and that's what the goal was all along." The up to portion of the motion is based on bills received from the City.

The county commission vote on the motion was 3-0. It helps to move toward an agreement with the City over the amount charged by the City to the County for EMS Services.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a fentanyl related death and have made an arrest.

Just after 10p.m. Sunday police arrested Penny Marie Webster, 59, of Manhattan, according to a media release from Riley County Police. 

Webster is being held on a $125,000 bond on distribution of a controlled substance resulting in fatality and distribution of opiate/opium/ narcotic/stimulant/heroin of unknown quantity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred in January of 2021 wherein law enforcement officers investigated the overdose death of a 61-year-old male in Manhattan, Kansas.

The investigation is ongoing. Investigations into all other Fentanyl-related overdoses in our community remain active and ongoing as well. Any individuals possessing pertinent information are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities.

The Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Guide has begun work on their next Geary County Visitor Guide.

In all honesty, the work began a few months ago because we are working on a new look and updated text throughout the book in hopes of gaining additional interest from travelers.

We have just begun work on selling AD space in the 2025 VG though, and invite any interested parties to reach out to Paige Mendoza with questions or interest.

Along with a fresh look, we also want to include a fresh new viewpoint from one of our Geary County residents!

We are collecting submissions for an entry piece for the 2025 Visitor Guide. The piece should be written in a way that tells what you love about Geary County, why you think visitors should come here, and any other stories or tid-bits that you think would be enticing for travelers who may read it!

The piece can be written in a creative format: Letter or Story for example.

Submissions need to be between 200-250 words.

Submission Cut-off date: September 23rd, 2024. (2 month submission period.)

Participants should be 10 or older please.

Just before 3p.m. Friday, officers listed a 26-year-old man as the victim. He reported a known suspect poured glue all over his vehicle, and others' vehicles. 

Total loss associated with this report at this time is approximately $2,700.

RCPD: $1,800 burglary at Dairy Queen

HARRISON COUNTY, MO. –A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 5p.m. Sunday in Harrison County, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Kia Sorento driven by Karam J. Bedros, 65, Woodbury, Minnesota, was southbound on Interstate 35 seven miles north of Eagleville.

The SUV traveled off the west side of the road into the median, struck the emergency crossover, became airborne, rolled and came to rest on its top.

A passenger identified as Victor B. Imad, 31, Manhattan, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported by the Harrison County Coroner to Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany.

Decatur County Ambulance transported Bedros to Harrison County Community Hospital. He was later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.&nbsp; Decatur County Ambulance transported passenger Carla E. Bedros, 59, Woodbury, Minnesota to Harrison County Community Hospital.&nbsp;

HARRISON COUNTY, MO. –A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 5p.m. Sunday in Harrison County, Missouri.The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Kia Sorento driven by Karam J. Bedros, 65, Woodbury, Minnesota, was southbound on Interstate 35 seven miles north of Eagleville.The SUV traveled off the west side of the road into the median, struck the emergency crossover, became airborne, rolled and came to rest on its top.A passenger identified as Victor B. Imad, 31, Manhattan, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported by the Harrison County Coroner to Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany.Decatur County Ambulance transported Bedros to Harrison County Community Hospital. He was later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.&nbsp; Decatur County Ambulance transported passenger Carla E.
