Local elected officials are pushing for a meeting with Fort Riley officials to talk about the Army's decision to close the Trooper Gate entrance to the Post. There have been impacts on issues ranging from busing to economics with local businesses.

Junction City Commissioner Richard Pinaire told a joint city - county - school district meeting at the C.L. Hoover Opera House that he would like to have the discussion with the military. Board of Education member Ron Johnson noted Trooper gate would be better over Grant Gate which is currently being used to transport traffic onto and off Post.

In addition to local elected officials representing the different commissions at a meeting with the Army, County Commissioner Keith Ascher observed it might be beneficial to have some congressional staff members in attendance. "We just need to have conversations, communications with Fort Riley and all the interested parties. It's probably not our call. It's more Fort Riley's call but I think they need to hear from the local community how it's affecting us and what we think."

There was a consensus to have the school district try to arrange the meeting.

While not opposed to a conversation with Fort Riley, County Commission Chair Trish Giordano said the commanding general has pretty much indicated that there is not enough manpower to run Trooper gate and a change in the decision to close it is not happening. County Commissioner Alex Tyson added missions dictate what happens on Post and decisions made on Fort Riley.

Also revealed during the discussion was that the Army planned to revaluate the Trooper Gate decision after 90 days.

Commissioner Pinaire stated part of revaluation is information and called for a meeting in about one month. He also noted that a lot of veterans are not happy about the decision to close Trooper Gate.

Through the initiative, the university is establishing itself as a hub for industry partnerships and workforce development, which are critical to solving challenges in both human and animal health.

"As Kansas continues to grow its animal health corridor, Kansas State University is uniquely equipped to train the workforce needed for this industry," Moran said. "I worked to secure federal resources to bolster&nbsp;K-State's efforts to build Manhattan into a premier location for biotechnology and biodefense companies looking to expand." 

The Biomanufacturing Core and Training Facility is one of four state-of-the-art facilities integral to the initiative. It will advance vaccine production by adhering to the highest safety standards set by regulatory agencies while producing critical biologics to combat zoonotic diseases and other health threats. It will also provide hands-on training for the next generation of biosecurity researchers to ensure that Kansas remains at the forefront of biomanufacturing expertise. As&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;leads advancements in biomanufacturing, it is also strengthening the state's economy by attracting jobs and top-tier industry partners to Kansas. This initiative enhances both the agricultural and public health sectors.

Geary County Booking Photos Aug. 24-26

On Saturday at 1024 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to 3710 Farnum Creed Rd., Acorns Resort for a capsized kayak. Kaden Claassen of Woodbine KS was fishing when his motorized Kayak began taking on water. 

Claassen became slightly incapacitated while trying to stay afloat when a passing pontoon boat assisted him to shore. Junction City EMS transported Claassen to Stormont Vail Flint Hills for reported minor injuries.

On Sunday at 8:37 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Rucker Rd. and Crider rd. for a semi rollover. Shania Laudemann of Woodbine was traveling west on the 5500 block of Rucker Rd. in her 2007 Peterbilt 379 when she lost control of the tractor trailer. 

The tractor trailer rolled over on its driver side where it laid. Shania was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan for reported minor injuries. TLC towing retrieved the semi-truck and trailer.

The subject is a 19-year-old man. Total loss associated with this report is approximately $1,700.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —In the 100+ degree heat on Sunday, service, courtesy and protection were front and center, according to a social media report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Trooper Ryan Davis came across a disabled vehicle on Interstate 70 in Riley County. With the extreme temperatures, he made sure the occupants—and their pups, Milo and Kenai—stayed cool in his patrol car while waiting for a tow.

A small act that makes a big difference, keeping Kansans safe and comfortable, no matter the circumstances.

City staff keep systems functioning to provide services to our residents and visitors. Inherent in providing those services, issues often arise that need to be addressed. When issues occur, it is most efficient for customers to contact City staff about that issue. If the issue cannot be resolved at that level, then the City Manager can weigh in to possibly find a resolution. If the issue cannot be resolved by the City Manager, then at that time, the Commission should consider the issue.

Having said that, the regular business meeting of the City Commission is not the most efficient place to resolve immediate and concerning issues.

Let’s try something new. When the Commission is approached by citizens, the Commissioner should ask the following questions before encouraging participation in the public comment:

Have you contacted Staff about this issue? Have you discussed this issue with the City Manager?

515 Report with Interim City Manager Gerry Vernon

The Geary County Register of Deeds is preparing to retire from that position after 27 years on the job. Diane Briestensky-Leonard was honored by friends and co-workers during a reception at the Geary County Office Building on Friday.

"It actually started when I was working for the title company and the Register of Deeds, Goldie Johnson called me and asked me if I wanted to come over and work as her deputy to train.&nbsp; I said okay and she hired me." Later in 1996 she was elected to the first of seven terms and took office in 1997.

Over the years Briestensky-Leonard noted that technology has played a big part in change.&nbsp;

While she is leaving the Register of Deeds office, Diane is moving to another job as school secretary at Saint Xavier School, her alma mater. She begins work there Sept. 3.

Briestensky-Leonard will be succeeded in the Register of Deeds position by Jacqie Reisenger, who has been training as the Deputy Register of Deeds for the past two years. She will be unopposed in the November general election and take the oath of office in January.

During Diane’s time as the Register of Deeds she served on boards for the North Central District Register of Deeds Association and the Kansas Register of Deeds Association, holding officer positions on both, including President.

She also served on many committees for the association that included the Legislative, and the Education Committee.

This 42-inch catfish was caught at Homer's Pond In Junction City by Grayson Silver. He is a third grade student at Westwood Elementary School.

“Me and my uncle (Mike Edmonson) were fishing at this duck pond where there are not a lot of big fish in it. We were using bluegill for bait and once I caught it, I let it get tired and then I reeled it in as fast as I could,” said Silver. “It was like five or 10 minutes and then I pulled it out of the water with my bare hands. We brought it home and kept it in our fish tank inside for a few days and fed it, but it started to get lonely, so we returned him to the pond.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

By reeling in the monster catfish, Silver has now qualified to receive the&nbsp;Master Angler Award from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. To receive this honor, which is considered the highest honor an angler of any age can receive from the state, a blue catfish must measure at least 37 inches.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Pawnee Mental Health has announced the promotion of Terra Upham, LCP, to Director of Therapy Services. With an impressive 11-year tenure at Pawnee, Terra brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this new position.

Terra Upham holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology, has completed specialized training as a Yoga and Mindfulness coach, TF-CBT, and is becoming a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Since joining Pawnee in 2013, she has gained extensive experience through roles such as mental health therapist, Youth Community Services Supervisor, and, most recently, assistant director of community services.

In her new role at Pawnee Mental Health, Upham will oversee therapy services for individuals and families, develop treatment plans, and work closely with the team to support the community’s mental health needs. She will also lead new initiatives aimed at expanding outreach and support services.

Upham is passionate about supporting individuals with mental illness and is committed to holistic care. Her extensive knowledge of trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices will be instrumental in enhancing the quality of Pawnee’s services. She dedicates herself to reducing mental health stigma and advocating for increased service access.

Outside of her professional work, Upham is keenly interested in promoting mental health awareness and serves as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor.&nbsp;

Pawnee Mental Health serves multiple counties including Riley and Geary.

Geary USD 475 schools were the in the spotlight at the Junction City Military&nbsp; Affairs Council Breakfast on Thursday.

Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston said at the end of the 2023-24 school year there were 7,326 students in the district. Right now there 7,000 students and more are still enrolling. The District wants to reach 7,500 students.

A total of 49 different languages are spoken in the schools.

Many teachers are paid in the $70,000 to 80,000 range. Beginning teacher salaries total 47,000 right now, and the District is hoping to move the beginning teacher salary schedule up to $50,000. USD 475 has 30 teachers with EdPhD's or advanced degrees.

Groundbreaking for a new Early Childhood Center is scheduled Oct. 11.&nbsp;

The District child nutrition has 56 employees and two kitchen managers. USD 475 serves 7,000 meals daily. Food service is a priority that includes enhanced meals and more home style meals. The District has also hired a chef.

There are 15 CTE Career Pathways at Junction City High School. Five new schools have also been built since 2012.

Geary County USD 475 ranks higher in its Kansas Assessment Program scores than the Kansas state average. USD 475 is the first district in Kansas to receive a Purple Star designation.

Officers reported a white Honda Civic was eastbound on Anderson when it struck a green Chevy Equinox that was attempting to make a left turn onto Seth Child causing it to rollover. The passenger in the Equinox was pronounced dead at Ascension Via Christi. The driver of the Equinox was Life-Flighted to Stormont Vail Medical Center in Topeka and the driver of the Civic was taken via ambulance to Ascension Via Christi. 

Anderson Ave. at Seth Child Road remained closed late Thursday afternoon while officers processed the accident. This is an open investigation so no other details will be released at this time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Agenda is set for joint meeting

The Kansas Department of Transportation has set a load rating of 15 tons for a single-axle, 20 tons for a double-axle and 30 tons for a triple-axle or greater on the J-Hill Road bridge over I-70 in Geary County.

These load ratings have been implemented by KDOT due to recent damage. KDOT continues to monitor and regularly inspect the bridge’s condition. Project planning is underway for a full bridge replacement.

Load rating set for J-Hill Road bridge in Geary County

Fort Riley Middle School principal Kathleen Brennan was recently named to&nbsp;the Kansas State Board of Education&nbsp;Blue Ribbon Task Force on Student Screen Time.“I am extremely excited to represent USD 475 on this task force and feel honored to serve alongside some of the brightest and best in education in our state,” said Brennan. “Hopefully, I can help make a difference in not only our USD 475 students’ lives, but also throughout the state.”&nbsp;

During the Kansas State Board of Education’s August meeting, members identified the topics and individuals who will serve on the Blue-Ribbon Task Force on Screen Time in Schools and Brennan was chosen. The 36-member task force will discuss the following areas: use of personal devices in schools, parental oversight of district-issued devices, screen time and mental health.

By being named to the task force, Brennan will work alongside four other principals from across the state of Kansas in Eric Hofer-Holdeman of Wichita USD 259, Brian Houghton of Fredonia USD 484, John Niehues of Greeley County USD 200 and Kamiel Evans of Wichita USD 259.&nbsp;

The task force is comprised of students, parents, teachers, school administrators, local school board members, two legislators, two state school board members and information technology experts. The 10 state board members each chose two individuals to serve on the task force.&nbsp;
