The public had an opportunity provide feedback Wednesday in Junction City on the service provided by ATA Bus, the public transit company. Similar meetings have been held in Manhattan and Ogden.

One suggestion called for better stops. For example there is no place to sit at a stop in the Wheatland area of Junction City and it is located on an upgrade. Others are located on streets with no place to sit. Many people do not know how to find and schedule a bus ride.

One strength cited was the free ATA Bus service for USD 475 students ages 11 and up. ATA Bus has a contract with Geary USD 475.&nbsp;

The entire bus system will offer free rides Nov. 4-9.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club recognizes one Junction City High School Student of the Month each month during the school year. This program is coordinated by Dana Wiegand at JCHS and is supported by JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill with a $25.00 gift certificate. A framed certificate was presented by the local Optimist Club.

David Thompson, son of Heather Thompson, is a senior at JCHS and is the October Student of the Month. He is in the Business, Public Service and Hospitality (BPSH) Academy, has been involved in Class Committees, golf, Art Club, Marching Band, Scholars Bowl and a been a member of the Beak Squad, which assists teachers and students with technology issues.

The nominees are selected based on the tenets of The Optimist Creed. David’s nomination was based on the statements: “to look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true; to wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile; and to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.”

The nominator also wrote that David “helps his classmates when they have trouble understanding the concepts in computer and business classes, has volunteered both during and after school hours to help other students and teachers with their computers and even assisted the primary presenter at the latest Professional Development Day.”

David also is a Teacher’s Assistant in the library. “He even teaches the library clerks a few technical lessons, has an exciting spirit and is kind to both students and adults.” David plans to attend Fort Hays Northwest Technical College in Goodland, Kansas upon graduation from Junction City High School.

This collaboration, unveiled on Wednesday during K-State's inaugural&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/engagement/office/week/">Extension and Engagement Week</a>, will leverage the extensive resources and staff of K-State Research and Extension, which operates in all 105 Kansas counties."This partnership aligns perfectly with our&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/next-gen/">Next-Gen K-State strategic plan</a>, which emphasizes community engagement and innovative solutions to address pressing challenges," said Tim Steffensmeier, K-State assistant vice president and director of engagement and outreach.&nbsp;

"The partnership's focus on combatting hunger dovetails with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://hungerfreekansas.org/">KHF's Hunger Free Kansas initiative,</a>&nbsp;which launched earlier this year in response to alarming statistics from Feeding America that indicate one in 10 Kansans and one in five Kansas children face food insecurity. Bontrager noted that the Convention and Visitor's Bureau was approached but was unable to provide funding at this time. He is hoping to talk with the JC First organization in November about obtaining $10,000, based on having some other available funds. His overall fundraising goal is $25,000.

Sheriff's Department reports injury accident

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating an Oklahoma man for alleged child sex crimes in Kansas.

On&nbsp;March 29, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation after a tip was received regarding sexual exploitation of a child, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

Investigators were able to develop a suspect in the case and during the investigation additional allegations of child sex crimes were discovered. 

On October 19, the Abilene Police Department located and arrested 45-year-old Stephen Gillenwater of Bristow, Oklahoma in reference to an arrest warrant that had been issued in the case. 

Gillenwater was booked into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, electronic Solicitation of a child, Sexual exploitation of a child and Aggravated Endangerment of a child.

Oklahoma man accused of child sex crimes in Kansas

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School is hosting a "Harvest Festival" this Friday night, Oct. 25 in Junction City. 

The event will be at the St. Xavier Gymnasium, at 200 N. Washington St. The Harvest Festival will feature fun for the whole family, with game booths, a bounce house, a cake walk, prizes, concessions, and community vendors. 

Tickets can be purchased at the door, and it is $1 per ticket. Cash, check, and Venmo will be accepted the night of the event.

 </figure>St. Francis Xavier Catholic School is hosting a "Harvest Festival" this Friday night, Oct. 25 in Junction City. The event will be at the St. Xavier Gymnasium, at 200 N. Washington St. The Harvest Festival will feature fun for the whole family, with game booths, a bounce house, a cake walk, prizes, concessions, and community vendors. Tickets can be purchased at the door, and it is $1 per ticket. Cash, check, and Venmo will be accepted the night of the event.

The Geary County Schools USD 475 communications department received four state awards last week from the Kansas School Public Relations Association, including two “Awards of Excellence” honors for its efforts in telling the stories and accomplishments of USD 475’s students and staff during the 2023-24 school year.&nbsp;

USD 475 Communications Department Honored by KanSPRA

On Friday&nbsp; October 18 at 1:27 pm, Geary County Fire was advised of a large fire in the area of US-77 Hwy and Skiddy West Road in Southwest Geary County. The cause of the blaze was undetermined.

Garry Berges said upon arrival on scene, the fire was rapidly moving in a northerly direction aided by the wind. Several structures which included residences and farm buildings were threatened by the fast moving fire. Ten fire units and two support units from Geary County were initially dispatched. Additional resources were requested, which included fire units from Junction City Fire, Grandview Plaza Fire, Herington Fire and Dickinson County Fire Task Force, Ft. Riley, Riley County, Woodbine and White City Fire Departments. Additionally, Kansas Forestry arranged for Tanker 95 based out of Hutchinson to assist due to the terrain and structures being threatened.

Tanker 95 made six water drops which assisted the ground units in bringing the fire under control. The fire was officially under control at 8:22pm. Marion County Fire Task came in and took over monitoring the scene overnight.

A total of 35 fire units made up of pumper trucks for structure protection, brush units&nbsp;and water tankers assisted in the fire suppression. Geary County Sheriff’s Office along with Kansas Wildlife and Parks assisted with traffic control and lending a hand. Geary County Fire Auxiliary assisted by Red Cross provided food and refreshments for the firefighters.

Local farmers and ranchers assisted by helping move cattle and providing additional water support.

Berges said a total of 8 farm sites and residences were threatened by the fast-moving fire. There were no structures damaged. Losses included a heifer calf, semi flatbed trailer, 1550 large round bales of hay, and an unknown amount of fence posts, gates, and barbed wire. Total loss is estimated at $122,000.00.

&nbsp;There were no injuries. An investigation into the cause of the fire was done and it is being listed as undetermined. Investigators found the area of origin but cannot determine the actual cause.

MANHATTAN, KAN.&nbsp;–Law enforcement are investigating a fatal weekend shooting and have made an arrest.

Just before 9p.m. Saturday,&nbsp;officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of N. 4th Street in Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department. Officers located 58-year-old Don Stovall, who was later pronounced deceased.

As part of the investigation, RCPD executed a search warrant early Sunday morning in the 3600 block of Saddlehorn Trail in Ogden. Aiden Keener, 20, was arrested in connection with the incident on requested charges of murder and kidnapping.

Police released no additional details early Monday.

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in September. This is unchanged from 3.3% in August and an increase from 2.6% in September 2023, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Labor.

“The Kansas unemployment rate held steady at 3.3% in September,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The labor force participation rate was also unchanged over the month at 66.2%, significantly higher than the U.S. rate of 62.7%.”

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,700 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 800 over the month, mwhile government increased by 1,900.

The unemployment rate Geary County fell a full percentage point from 5.3 percent in August to 4.3 percent in September.&nbsp;The jobless rate is also down significantly in Riley, Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties. The rate in Dickinson County dropped from 6 percent 3.1 percent.

Since September 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,200. This change is due to an increase of 16,500 private sector jobs and an increase of 2,700 government jobs.
