KANSAS CITY– A former Kansas City man has been charged in federal court after child pornography was found on the cell phone he carried into a secure area at the U.S. Department of Energy national security campus in Kansas City, according to the United State's Attorney.

Shaun Walker, 39, was charged in a criminal complaint filed under seal in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City on March 14, 2022, with one count of distributing child pornography, one count of receiving child pornography, and one count of possessing child pornography. The complaint has been unsealed following Walker’s arrest on Monday, March 21. Walker remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing on Thursday, March 24.

Walker was employed by Honeywell Federal Manufacturing and Technology, which is contracted by the Nuclear National Security Administration.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the federal criminal complaint, Walker entered an inner secure area of the U.S. Department of Energy National Security Campus in Kansas City, Mo., with his personal cell phone on Nov. 29, 2021. Walker contacted Kansas City National Security Campus Security to self-report the violation.

Walker gave his cell phone to security personnel, who reviewed the cell phone to determine if any classified material was present on the phone. During the review, the affidavit says, a security officer observed numerous images and videos depicting child pornography. Walker’s phone was seized in order to conduct a forensic examination.

Investigators found an encrypted folder on Walker’s cell phone that contained 21 images and a video of a 5-year-old girl who is known to Walker. Investigators found dozens of additional images and videos of child pornography on Walker’s cell phone. Investigators also found thousands of WhatsApp chats between Walker and females he contacted through a livestreaming pornography website. Walker requested photos and videos of nude underage females conducting sexual acts, the affidavit says. As a result of his WhatsApp chats, Walker allegedly received and distributed images and videos of child pornography.

Child Porn: KC man's cell phone seized after carried into secure DOE area

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have made an arrest.

Just after 3a.m. March 24, police&nbsp;were dispatched to a Topeka hospital in reference to a victim of a shooting arriving there with a non-life threatening injury, according to Lt. Donna Eubanks.

 After making contact with the victim officers located the place of the crime in the 500 Block of NE Grattan in Topeka.

As a result of the investigation, Dylan Dean Thomas, 30 years of age was booked into Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Distribution of an opiate within 1000’ of a school, Distribution of a depressant within 1000’ of a school, Possession of marijuana and Possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police make arrest after shooting victim arrives at Kan. hospital

Junction City Police Chief John Lamb is confirming that there was a "large melee" in the Freshman Success Academy cafeteria area at Junction City High School on Thursday. Police estimate that it involved approximately 13 or 14 students. He stated that working with school officials they have identified all of the students and have taken&nbsp; the necessary reports.

Lamb said there will be a security meeting on Monday to talk to District officials about the security steps police will take with prosecution and moving forward with "taking the necessary course of an action."

In order to stop the violence Lamb noted that he felt the tone had to be set at the beginning of the year. "Moving forward I really want to set a strong tone next year when we go in with our school resource officers, letting them know that this type of behavior is not tolerated. It is criminal. " Lamb added working with school officials, police will take necessary actions "to hold people accountable for this type of behavior." Lamb added law enforcement and the school need to set a strong tone at the beginning of the school year.

No arrests have been made. Lamb said he had been informed that school officials wanted to charge the students with Disorderly Conduct instead of Battery because it was just a large fight. " But I want to revisit that and look at what else we can possibly do. "&nbsp;

USD 475 Superintendent Dr. Reginald Eggleston confirmed for JC Post that there was a fight between some students on Thursday in the&nbsp; freshman cafeteria at the high school and District officials are in the process of investigating and identifying everyone who was involved. "At this present moment disciplinary action will be determined. We will meet Monday in order to finalize any actions that need to be made."

Eggleston confirmed that right now officials are uncertain what caused the fight. "Don't know all of the details of that at this present moment, don't know if there was any disagreements or if something happened outside of school. At present we'll still need some time to kind of unravel all the pieces to it."

The Superintendent confirmed that safety is always the number one priority for the school district and that they do everything to try and respond appropriately to information&nbsp; that they have received, or&nbsp; anything on which they need to take action "We're going to do everything in our power to make sure we create a culture and climate in the building that is conducive to learning so that everyone involved can be productive in the environment."&nbsp;

USD 475 has issued a text statement that District leadership was aware of fights that took place at JCHS this week. They noted that they take these incidents seriously and are working with local law&nbsp; enforcement in addressing this situation, and will take the necessary&nbsp; steps to reduce incidents in the future.&nbsp; The message read that it's important for&nbsp; the public to know that the safety and well-being of the District's students and staff is our top priority. Police and USD 475 are investigating a melee at Junction City High School 

KANSAS CITY — A Kansas City man who was caught discussing plans online to sexually abuse a child pleaded guilty in federal court to distributing child pornography.

Joshua Evan Lilley, 30, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to one count of distributing child pornography and one count of receiving child pornography over the internet, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to the plea agreement, an FBI employee from the Knoxville, Tennessee, division was acting in an undercover capacity on April 30, 2021, targeting individuals on a social media site (not identified) who were actively engaged in sharing, distributing, and/or producing child pornography. The undercover FBI employee was in contact with a site user (not identified) who sent Lilley images and videos of child pornography, which that individual had produced.

Messages between Lilley and the user involved a conversation about a child victim, to whom the user had access, and whom Lilly wanted to sexually abuse. Lilley sent the user images and videos of child sexual abuse; one involved bestiality. That individual was arrested, and consented for an FBI covert employee to assume their online identity.

Lilley sent at least six videos of child sexual abuse to the FBI covert employee. Lilley also sent a link to approximately 184 videos of child sexual abuse that he had collected.

Lilley said he was involved with other groups on the social media site that shared child pornography. He asked to meet the FBI covert employee for dinner and a drink. Lilley said he wanted to meet in person before going any further in their plans. When Lilley arrived for the meeting, the FBI covert employee sent him a message that he wasn’t going to be able to make it, and there was no meeting. A surveillance team followed Lilley as he returned home. &nbsp;

Law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Lilley’s residence on May 5, 2021, and seized his iPhone, iPad, laptop computer and a thumb drive, each of which contained child pornography. Investigators also seized five glass containers and eight bags that contained marijuana, a loaded Taurus 9mm semi-automatic pistol with additional ammunition, a Savage Arms .22-caliber rifle, and $12,020 in cash.

Under federal statutes, Lilley is subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison without parole, up to a sentence of 40 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

KC man caught discussing plans online to sexually abuse child

PAWNEE COUNTY —A Pawnee County Judge sentenced a Kansas man to life in prison Thursday for an incident involving a 13-year-old in February 2019.

Judge Bruce Gatterman sentenced Roy Gene Hill, 59 of Osage, to life in prison with a requirement he serve a minimum of 40 years prior to becoming eligible for parole, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett. He received an additional 18-month sentence due to the failure to register conviction.

In January, a Pawnee County Jury found Hill Guilty of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child Under the Age of 14 following a three-day trial.

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred during the early morning hours of February 10, 2019, at a residence in Garfield, Kansas involving a 13 year old.&nbsp; Hill was arrested at the scene without incident following a call to 911. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation handled the follow-up investigation. Testimony was presented at trial that Hill was a house guest of the family.

At the time of the incident, Hill was subject to life-time registration due to a previous Aggravated Indecent Liberties conviction for an incident in Neosho County in 2002. Hill previously entered a No Contest plea on December 16, 2021, to Count 2 in the case to a charge of Failing to Register as a Sex Offender with the Pawnee County Sheriff.

Just before 8p.m. Monday,&nbsp;officers were dispatched to the 900 Block of S Kansas Avenue in Topeka, after multiple burglaries were discovered at the Cyrus Hotel, according to Police Lt. Donna Eubanks.

Through investigation a suspect was developed and was transported to the law enforcement center to be interviewed.

As a result of the investigation, Justin Byron-Edgar Sims, 21 years of age was booked into Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include 4 counts of Burglary and Theft &gt; 1, 500 &lt; 25,000 (3 counts)Theft &lt; 1,000, according to Eubanks.

Cryptocurrency is the hot new trend 
in investing, and much is still not understood about this buzzy, 
volatile digital payment system that does not rely on banks to verify 
transactions. This has created a fertile environment for scams, 
according to a new in-depth investigative study by Better Business 
Bureau® (BBB®), which states: “A virtual tug of war exists between the legitimate and fraudulent use of cryptocurrency.”&nbsp;

The study – Cryptocurrency
 scams: BBB study finds lack of regulation and consumer education 
results in dramatic increase in fraud and financial losses
 – examines the many facets of cryptocurrency and the variety of ways 
criminals are exploiting the cryptocurrency market to steal from

Cryptocurrency is a form of digital money 
whereby encryption technology can enable anyone anywhere to send and 
receive payments. It does not exist in a physical form such as paper 
money, but as lines of computer code, supported by a decentralized 
computer system known as blockchain and stored in a “crypto wallet.” 
Bitcoin, developed in 2009, is the most popular form of cryptocurrency, 
available for purchase at tens of thousands of Bitcoin ATMs and 
increasingly accepted as payment in certain retail transactions. 
Ethereum is the second most common cryptocurrency and is centrally 
involved in the increasingly popular non-fungible tokens (NFTs), digital
 assets such as pictures or music that are purchased with cryptocurrency
 as an investment. Critically, cryptocurrency operates outside the 
traditional banking system and is not subject to the same protections as
 bank deposits or credit card transactions.&nbsp;

Reports from victims of large financial 
losses to cryptocurrency related scams are skyrocketing. In 2021, BBB 
received more than 2,400 complaints with monetary losses of nearly $8 
million involving cryptocurrency companies. BBB Scam Tracker reports 
about crypto scams numbered more than 1,200 in 2021 and likewise totaled
 nearly $8 million in losses. Scam Tracker reports to BBB tripled between 2019 and 2021, and reported losses tripled over the last two years.&nbsp;

Cryptocurrency accounted for the second 
highest scam losses reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 
2021, with losses of $750 million. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint 
Center (IC3) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) also had major 
increases in reports received and major increases in losses. BBB’s study
 notes that research shows that most people do not make a report when 
they are scammed, so actual losses suggested to be substantially 
greater.&nbsp;

Cryptocurrency has some key traits that 
make it attractive to scammers: It is relatively unregulated and 
difficult to recoup once lost; it is wildly popular, fueled in part by 
celebrity endorsements; and it is not well understood by the general 
public. The study states that the cryptocurrency market offers new 
opportunities for tried-and-true investment frauds such as Ponzi schemes
 and fraudulent ICOs (initial coin offerings), particularly given the 
development of new currencies and the lack of protections that 
government regulation has made available to more traditional investors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Many victims report that after purchasing 
cryptocurrency, they&nbsp;were directed to websites where they had to create 
an account in order to monitor their investments. The websites are 
sophisticated, with many offering live customer service chats. But 
victims who want to withdraw their “earnings” are told they must 
contribute more money to cover taxes, commissions, or other fees. 
Ultimately, they can never withdraw money..&nbsp;

A consumer told BBB that she began 
learning about Bitcoin investing in the summer of 2021, reaching out via
 WhatsApp to an investing service she saw mentioned repeatedly in the 
comments of a YouTube video about Bitcoin. The woman was instructed to 
buy $1,500 in Bitcoin via CashApp; 10 days later, she received a 
screenshot displaying an account balance of more than $7,300. However, 
when she decided to withdraw her earnings, she was told to pay a 10% 
commission and a broker’s fee of more than $800. After she paid both, 
she received an email instructing her to pay an additional sum of nearly
 $1,200 to withdraw her money. She concluded it was a scam and reported 
it to BBB.&nbsp;

BBB Scam Tracker data shows that 
cryptocurrency scams most commonly originate on social media, with the 
FTC noting that 25% of crypto fraud reported in 2021 began on social 
media. Scammers may impersonate a victim’s friends to tell them about 
their success in crypto investing, or they may make Facebook posts 
promising big gains.&nbsp;

Cryptocurrency figures prominently in 
other scams as well. Law enforcement and BBB report that romance 
scammers have begun convincing their victims to invest in cryptocurrency
 via sophisticated fake apps, disappearing with the money when the 
victim attempts to withdraw proceeds. Ransomware scams also demand 
cryptocurrency as payment in many cases, BBB’s study notes. BBB Scam 
Tracker data shows that cryptocurrency also is a commonly requested 
payment method in fraudulent online sales, advance fee loan scams, 
employment scams, extortion scams, government impostor fees and more. 
Illicit transactions on the so-called dark web are often conducted using
 cryptocurrency, and it is used in money laundering.&nbsp;

Law enforcement agencies have pursued 
cases involving large cryptocurrency losses and the use of 
cryptocurrency in criminal activity. The U.S. Department of Justice has 
made arrests this year in cases involving billions of dollars in 
cryptocurrency laundering.&nbsp;&nbsp;

receive payments. It does not exist in a physical form such as paper 
money, but as lines of computer code, supported by a decentralized 
computer system known as blockchain and stored in a “crypto wallet.” 
Bitcoin, developed in 2009, is the most popular form of cryptocurrency, 
available for purchase at tens of thousands of Bitcoin ATMs and 
increasingly accepted as payment in certain retail transactions. 
Ethereum is the second most common cryptocurrency and is centrally 
involved in the increasingly popular non-fungible tokens (NFTs), digital
 assets such as pictures or music that are purchased with cryptocurrency
 as an investment. Critically, cryptocurrency operates outside the 
traditional banking system and is not subject to the same protections as
 bank deposits or credit card transactions.&nbsp;Reports from victims of large financial 
losses to cryptocurrency related scams are skyrocketing. In 2021, BBB 
received more than 2,400 complaints with monetary losses of nearly $8 
million involving cryptocurrency companies. BBB Scam Tracker reports 
about crypto scams numbered more than 1,200 in 2021 and likewise totaled
 nearly $8 million in losses. Scam Tracker reports to BBB tripled between 2019 and 2021, and reported losses tripled over the last two years.&nbsp;Cryptocurrency accounted for the second 
highest scam losses reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 
2021, with losses of $750 million. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint 
Center (IC3) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) also had major 
increases in reports received and major increases in losses. BBB’s study
 notes that research shows that most people do not make a report when 
they are scammed, so actual losses suggested to be substantially 
greater.&nbsp;Cryptocurrency has some key traits that 
make it attractive to scammers: It is relatively unregulated and 
difficult to recoup once lost; it is wildly popular, fueled in part by 
celebrity endorsements; and it is not well understood by the general 
public. The study states that the cryptocurrency market offers new 
opportunities for tried-and-true investment frauds such as Ponzi schemes
 and fraudulent ICOs (initial coin offerings), particularly given the 
development of new currencies and the lack of protections that 
government regulation has made available to more traditional investors.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many victims report that after purchasing 
cryptocurrency, they&nbsp;were directed to websites where they had to create 
an account in order to monitor their investments. The websites are 
sophisticated, with many offering live customer service chats. But 
victims who want to withdraw their “earnings” are told they must 
contribute more money to cover taxes, commissions, or other fees. 
Ultimately, they can never withdraw money..&nbsp;A consumer told BBB that she began 
learning about Bitcoin investing in the summer of 2021, reaching out via
 WhatsApp to an investing service she saw mentioned repeatedly in the 
comments of a YouTube video about Bitcoin. The woman was instructed to 
buy $1,500 in Bitcoin via CashApp; 10 days later, she received a 
screenshot displaying an account balance of more than $7,300. However, 
when she decided to withdraw her earnings, she was told to pay a 10% 
commission and a broker’s fee of more than $800. After she paid both, 
she received an email instructing her to pay an additional sum of nearly
 $1,200 to withdraw her money. She concluded it was a scam and reported 
it to BBB.&nbsp;BBB Scam Tracker data shows that 
cryptocurrency scams most commonly originate on social media, with the 
FTC noting that 25% of crypto fraud reported in 2021 began on social 
media. Scammers may impersonate a victim’s friends to tell them about 
their success in crypto investing, or they may make Facebook posts 
promising big gains.&nbsp;Cryptocurrency figures prominently in 
other scams as well. Law enforcement and BBB report that romance 
scammers have begun convincing their victims to invest in cryptocurrency
 via sophisticated fake apps, disappearing with the money when the 
victim attempts to withdraw proceeds. Ransomware scams also demand 
cryptocurrency as payment in many cases, BBB’s study notes. BBB Scam 
Tracker data shows that cryptocurrency also is a commonly requested 
payment method in fraudulent online sales, advance fee loan scams, 
employment scams, extortion scams, government impostor fees and more. 
Illicit transactions on the so-called dark web are often conducted using
 cryptocurrency, and it is used in money laundering.&nbsp;Law enforcement agencies have pursued 
cases involving large cryptocurrency losses and the use of 
cryptocurrency in criminal activity. The U.S. Department of Justice has 
made arrests this year in cases involving billions of dollars in 
cryptocurrency laundering.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Tips to avoid cryptocurrency scams:&nbsp;</h2><ul>
 <li>Guard your wallet.
 If you buy cryptocurrency, the security of the wallet is of prime 
importance. If you lose the key, then your funds are gone permanently.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Look carefully at email addresses and website addresses. Phishing
 scams often try to trick people into logging in and then capture the 
log in credentials. Those then can be used to steal money. Looking for 
an exchange with an internet search engine may lead to fake sites which 
advertise and impersonate real companies. Be especially careful when 
viewing these on a phone.&nbsp;</li><li>Do not pay for products with cryptocurrency.
 Be careful if someone asks you to pay with Bitcoin or another 
cryptocurrency. No one with the government will ever ask for this form 
of payment.&nbsp;</li><li>Beware of fake recovery companies. Scam companies sometimes claim that they can recover stolen money – for a fee. These are usually scammers.</li><li>Watch out for fake reviews. Scammers often create fake reviews for their own companies.</li><li>Be wary of celebrity endorsements.
 It can be tempting to rely on a prominent figure who has invested in 
cryptocurrency. But those endorsements are often not authorized and even
 if they are, the celebrity may be paid for the effort and may not know 
more about it than you do.&nbsp;</li><li>Be careful about claims made on social media. This is the most common place for people to encounter investment scams.&nbsp;</li><li>Be wary of “friends” who reach out to you on social media and tell you how they made money with cryptocurrency. Accounts are frequently compromised. Call your friend by phone to see if it is really them.&nbsp;</li><li>Only download apps from Google Play or the App Store. Trusted
 app stores do not eliminate the threat of app scams, but they do offer a
 basic level of protection. Be careful with apps. Some contain malicious

Study: Cryptocurrency is ripe for fraud and financial loss

LINCOLN COUNTY- Thirty-three dogs were removed from a residence in Barnard on Monday and the owner was later arrested on requested cruelty to animals charges.

"On Monday, March 21, 2022 the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a residence in Barnard, Kansas. As a result of the search warrant, 33 dogs of various ages and breeds were removed from the deplorable conditions they were living in," Sheriff Dustin Florence noted in a news release on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LincolnCountyKSSheriff">Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Facebook page</a> today.

Barnard is located in northeastern Lincoln County.

Cruelty to animals charges have been requested for the owner of the dogs, who has not been named. He was being held in the Lincoln County Jail, the release noted. The case has been forwarded to the Lincoln County Attorney's Office.

The sheriff's office thanked several organizations for assisting with the rescue of the dogs, including the Sedgwick County Animal Shelter, All Dogs Bark and Play Rescue, Golden Belt Humane Society, the State of Kansas Animal Facilities inspectors, Solomon Valley Veterinarian Hospital, and a number of volunteers.

"The Sheriff's Office would also add that owning animals is a huge commitment. Dogs, cats and other domestic animals require food, water and shelter at all times, as well as proper medical care. We understand that sometimes the love people have for animals outweighs their abilities to properly care for them; either financially or proper shelter or medically. We encourage anyone who may be struggling to properly care for their animals to reach out before the problem becomes much larger than anyone can handle," Florence wrote in the news release.

Owner faces charges after 33 dogs removed from Kansas home

HAYS — A Hays man is facing possible first-degree murder charges after an incident that led to the death of his wife Monday.

According to the Ellis County Attorney's Office,&nbsp;Jay Naldo Schumacher was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery, domestic battery and mistreatment of a dependent adult. His bond was set at $150,000.

The alleged victim of the charges was his wife, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/989ac447-b583-44aa-a248-eac2ae7a2623">Karen Schumacher</a>, who died later that day at Hays Medical Center.

In light of the development, , the county attorney's office said in a news release, "the state now alleges that the crime(s) committed now include 1) murder in the first degree under the theory of felony murder — mistreatment of a dependent adult; 2) aggravated battery; 3) domestic battery, and 4) mistreatment of a dependent adult."

The state requested Jay Naldo Schumacher be seen by a judge again to revisit his bond, which was increased to $2 million.

The county attorney's office said it intends on filing charges in the coming days.

Kan. man facing possible murder charges after wife dies in Hays

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a murder and have made an arrest.

Just after 1p.m. February 10,&nbsp;deputies were sent to check the welfare of a man in the 200 block of east 86th Street South in Haysville after a property owner noticed him lying next to their home, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

When deputies arrived to check on the man later&nbsp;identified as Vennie Kongvongsay, 23 of Wichita, they discovered he was deceased and had suffered a gunshot wound.&nbsp;

On March 22, 2022, deputies arrested Jim Sanchez, 27 of Wichita and Justinlee Welch, 25 of Wichita of requested charges of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery and Kidnapping in connection with the death of Kongvongsay.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A detention hearing for a 16-year-old arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at Towne East Square&nbsp; was held Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Judge Patrick Walters ruled&nbsp;the 16-year-old&nbsp; accused in the killing of 14-year-old Trenjvious Hutton of Wichita will remain in custody in the Juvenile Detention Facility until his initial appearance on April 18, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. David Miller was appointed as his attorney. 

Just after 5:30 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a shooting at Towne East Mall, 7700 E Kellogg Drive in Wichita.

 Upon arrival, officers entered the mall and located 14-year-old Trenjvious Hutton inside who had been shot. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

The investigation revealed, Hutton was involved in a physical altercation with several individuals known to him stemming from an ongoing dispute. During the altercation a 16-year-old suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Hutton. The suspect then fled on foot.

Witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect which allowed arriving officers to quickly locate him in the area and make an arrest, according to Ditch.

 A 17-year-old boy with the suspect was detained, questioned, and released. Additionally, officers also recovered two handguns during the investigation.

The 16-year-old shooting suspect is being held on a requested charge of 2nd-degree murder, according to Ditch.

Judge makes ruling on 16-year-old in Kansas mall killing 

KANSAS CITY— A California man was charged in federal court Friday with smuggling more than four kilograms of counterfeit pills that contain fentanyl aboard a bus traveling through Kansas City, Missouri, from Los Angeles, Calif.

Matthew John Gomez, 27, was charged with one count of possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute in a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the federal criminal complaint, members of the Missouri Western Interdiction Task Force (MoWIN) watched Gomez at a local bus terminal on Wednesday, March 16, as he got off a bus traveling through Kansas City from Los Angeles. Gomez was wearing a backpack and carrying a large duffel bag. He walked out the front doors of the bus terminal and paced back and forth on the sidewalk while making a call on his cell phone. A police detective contacted Gomez, who said he was traveling to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The detective asked Gomez if he would consent to a search of his luggage. Gomez placed his duffel bag on the ground and was in the process of removing his backpack when he quickly stepped away from the detective in an attempt to flee. A struggle ensued, and Gomez was eventually placed under arrest and escorted into the terminal.

A police dog alerted to the presence of drugs in Gomez’s duffel bag and backpack. Officers searched Gomez’s backpack and found three large, heat-sealed packages that contained numerous blue M30 pills. Although blue M30 pills typically contain 30 milligrams of oxycodone hydrochloride, law enforcement officers are aware that such pills are commonly counterfeit pills that are made with fentanyl. The gross weight of the pills was 4,127 grams, which is approximately 9.1 pounds. A forensic specialist with the Kansas City Police Crime Laboratory confirmed that the recovered pills contain fentanyl.

Gomez told investigators he was paid $500 before leaving Los Angeles and was to be paid an additional $2,000 when he returned.

He was pronounced deceased on scene.The investigation revealed, Hutton was involved in a physical altercation with several individuals known to him stemming from an ongoing dispute. During the altercation a 16-year-old suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Hutton. The suspect then fled on foot.Witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect which allowed arriving officers to quickly locate him in the area and make an arrest, according to Ditch. A 17-year-old boy with the suspect was detained, questioned, and released. Additionally, officers also recovered two handguns during the investigation.The 16-year-old shooting suspect is being held on a requested charge of 2nd-degree murder, according to Ditch.

McPHERSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities and school district officials are investigating a Kansas middle school teacher for alleged child sex crimes.

On Thursday, authorities in Saline County arrested 59-year-old Barry Adam Fritz on requested charges of&nbsp; Aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to online jail records.

According to <a href="https://sites.google.com/a/usd419.org/cg_elem/canton-galva-elementary/faculty-staff">the USD 419 web site,</a> Fritz worked as Canton-Galva elementary school physical education teacher.&nbsp; On Monday, the school board suspended him with pay pending further investigation, according to school principal Jim Struber.

On November 24, a police officer was called to Salina Regional Health Center for the report of a sexual offense with a person under the age of 14, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus. It was reported that the incident, which included inappropriate sexual activity, occurred at a south Salina residence.

Between the time the incident was reported and the arrest, members of the Salina Police Department Detective Division were collecting information and evidence in the case, according to Hanus.

Kan. man charged after explosives, guns and drugs seized at home

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas woman charged with murder in a fatal hit-and-run in March of 2021 entered a plea in the case Friday.

Charity Blackmon, 32, Wichita, pled guilty to 2nd degree intentional murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. She was scheduled for a jury trial starting this week.

On March 26, 2021 police were dispatched to 13th&nbsp;Street North and Oliver Avenue in Wichita for a shooting call, according to officer Paul Cruz. Upon arriving, they located&nbsp;54-year-old <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/2blv6y22g0?qid=7f0e4807b16464f4303f8d95ed764ff1">Merrill Rabus of Wichita</a> unconscious and receiving life-saving measures.

Rabus had undetermined injuries, including what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation revealed Rabus was on his bicycle at the intersection of 13th&nbsp;Street North and Oliver Avenue when he was struck by a white Plymouth van driven by 31-year-old Charity Blackmon. 

Blackmon then got out of her vehicle and fired a shot from a handgun, striking Rabus. Blackmon fled the scene and was followed by witnesses who provided her location. She was located and arrested at 14th&nbsp;Street North and Green Street by a Wichita State University police officer, according to Cruz.

 Blackmon and Rabus were not known to each other. Officers also recovered a handgun through this investigation.&nbsp;

She is scheduled for sentencing on May 9.

A third teen has been arrested in connection to the case in which a landscaper was shot with a gel gun in downtown Salina on March 15 Three other cases of such shootings were reported on Saturday, March 19

On Friday, police arrested Kaleb A. Arthurs, 18, Salina, on requested charges of battery and aggravated assault, according to&nbsp;Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.

The arrest is in connection to a case in which a 26-year -old Salina woman was shot in the chest with a pellet from a gel gun while she was doing some landscaping work in the 200 block of S. Santa Fe Avenue.

On Friday, police announced that two teens, a 17-year-old Salina boy and Lucas E. Burleson, 18, of Salina, had been apprehended in the case.

Police believe the incident is part of a TikTok "Orbeez Challenge" that encourages participants to use airsoft-type guns that shoot gel or water beads at pedestrians. The nationwide phenomenon has resulted in multiple injuries, including in Salina.

Hanus said that between 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, three additional instances of people being shot with gel guns were reported. Two of the instances resulted in injury. Those instances include the following.

●A woman was struck in the face, resulting in a slight injury. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive in Salina.

●A 22-year-old runner was shot near the intersection of S. Ohio Street and E. Crawford Street in Salina. She reported no injury.

●A 50-year-old veteran was struck in the face while sitting in a vehicle in the Sunset Plaza parking lot on W. Crawford Street in Salina. He was slightly injured.

Hanus said that people need to be aware that the TikTok challenge is dangerous and that there will be consequences for people who shoot others with gel guns. Parents particularly need to be aware of what their children are doing with gel guns, he said.

Police arrest third Kan. teen in connection with TikTok challenge

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges after the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit and Shawnee County Drug Task Force served a search warrants in the 1300 Block NW Van Buren, according to Lt. Ronnie Connell

While conducting the search warrant, officers located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

As a result, officers arrested 37-year-old Rolanda Shopteese and 42-year-old Crystal Wakolee both of Topeka.&nbsp; They were transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Crystal Wakolee is jailed on requested charges of  Distribute controlled substance, Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernaliam  Making False Information, Forgery, Theft by deception, Perjury and Identity theft.

Police accuse two Kan. women of ID theft, drug possession

KANSAS CITY(AP) — The family of a man who was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-travel-crime-shootings-missouri-c0f9c4bf729c2f3e96bbc8def6ca9264">shot and killed while riding an Amtrak train</a>&nbsp;in Missouri is suing the railroad company and the alleged shooter for at least $100 million.

Richie Terell Aaron Jr., 30, of Independence, was shot as the Missouri River Runner train arrived at the Lee's Summit station on Jan. 14, where the alleged shooter got off.

The federal lawsuit says the train continued on to the Independence stop, despite pleas from passengers to wait and get help for Aaron, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article259564104.html#storylink=cpy">reported</a>.

Aaron was pronounced dead when the train arrived in Independence about 35 minutes later, according to the lawsuit, which was filed Friday by lawyers representing Aaron's widow and three children.

The lawsuit accuses Amtrak of making “no effort” to get medical treatment for Aaron. It also alleges the company has lax security.

An Amtrak spokeswoman said Sunday the organization could not comment on the lawsuit.

Marquise Webb, 21, of Kansas City, is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-shootings-arrests-kansas-city-independence-82241edc52a78997f855061e35baa9a4">charged&nbsp;</a>with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in Aaron’s killing.

Webb is also charged in Jackson County with carjacking a man after he got off the train. He was arrested two weeks later after a standoff with Kansas City police. He is being held in the Jackson County jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Family of man fatally shot on train near Kansas City sues Amtrak

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A Kansas man has been sentenced for a deadly shooting during a dispute in August of 2020.&nbsp;

A judge sentenced 26-year-old Donovan Harrington, 26, to just over 20 years in prison&nbsp; for the murder of Miguel Tapia, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp; 

A jury found Harrington guilty of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Just after 7:30 a.m. August 17, 2020, police responded to a shooting call in the 600 block of South Armour Drive in Wichita, according to Officer Kevin Wheeler. Upon arrival, officers located 27-year-old Miguel Tapia outside of a Nissan Pathfinder with gunshot wounds. Tapia was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation&nbsp; revealed that Tapia was driving the Pathfinder with a suspect later identified as Harrington  and a 19-year-old and 20-year-old females as passengers. 

An argument ensued between Harrington and Tapia, and Harrington shot him. Harrington and the passengers ran from the vehicle and flagged down an unknowing driver to get a ride.

Harrington was arrested the following day during a vehicle stop in the 600 block of South Woodlawn, according to Wheeler.

Harrington has previously been convicted on of theft, criminal threat, aggravated robbery, Flee or elude law enforcement with five or more moving violations and was on parole through the Kansas Department of Corrections at the time of the shooting.

Kan. man sentenced for killing during SUV ride with 2 women

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just before 2a.m. Thursday, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a spray painted 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck in the 2400 block of SW Fillmore Street for driving with an expired license plate, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver, Christopher L. Allen (39) of Topeka, had a suspended driver’s license and two warrants for his arrest out of Shawnee County. During the investigation, the deputy located illegal narcotics.

Allen was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for his warrants and on requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended driver’s license, vehicle registration violations and no vehicle liability insurance.

During the investigation, the deputy located illegal narcotics.Allen was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for his warrants and on requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended driver’s license, vehicle registration violations and no vehicle liability insurance.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and made an arrest.

Just after 9p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to a reported theft near 16th and Maple in the city of Independence, according to a media release.

The victim reported his electric bike was stolen by a naked man and identified the suspect as 33-year-old Shane May of Independence. to police.  Dispatch immediately began receiving other reports of a naked man running around the 10th and Myrtle area. 

 Officers located the nude man and May refused to surrender.  He ran into oncoming traffic and jumped on the side of a slowing vehicle.  At this time officers were able to grab May and physically subdue him. May was&nbsp; taken into custody without serious injury to himself or the officers.

May is being held on requested charges of aggravated robbery, interference with law enforcement officers, and disorderly conduct.&nbsp;

Police arrest naked man for Kan. strong-arm robbery

TOPEKA — Kim Bergman was 12 years old when her gymnastics coach, David Byrd, began abusing her.

Bergman was not his first victim, and she was not his last. Coaches 
she confided in did not report the crime, and when a therapist finally 
did, nothing came of it. Bergman said she felt she had done something 
wrong and that nobody believed her.

By the time she was able to come forward, it was past the statute of 
limitations in Kansas to collect damages for childhood sexual abuse. 
Under current law, these lawsuits must be filed within three years of 
the survivor turning 18 or within three years of discovering an injury 
or illness caused by the abuse.

When Byrd was eventually arrested for indecent liberties with a 
minor, Bergman said, she felt tremendous guilt for not having come 
forward sooner, reigniting her desire to ensure others in her position 
have a way to seek justice. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/measures/sb420/">Senate Bill 420</a> would do that by eliminating the deadline for filing lawsuits.

“One of David Byrd’s last known victims recently stated, ‘If the 
statute of limitations had been lifted before my assault, there’s a good
 chance that I never would have been a victim,’ ” Bergman said Thursday 
at a news conference at the Statehouse. “Over and over, I have been told
 that my abusers’ rights mattered more than mine. Removing the statute 
of limitations would give me the opportunity to make my abuser 
accountable for what he did to me.”

Sen. Cindy Holscher, D-Overland Park, introduced legislation four 
years ago, but after a wave of initial support, it was put on the 
backburner as COVID-19 matters took priority. Supporters were optimistic
 the bill would clear the Legislature this year, but Sen. Kellie Warren,
 a Leawood Republican and chairwoman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, 
has yet to schedule the bill for a hearing despite repeated requests 
from Bregman and other supporters.

A coalition of victims, legislators and an attorney are now calling 
on Warren to schedule a hearing and give the bill a chance. Warren, who 
is seeking the GOP nomination for attorney general, did not respond to a
 request for comment for this story.

“A person who has been subjected to this type of sexual assault, 
sexual violence as a child, may take decades before they’re able to talk
 about it again,” Holscher said. “It’s what we call the age of 
disclosure, which on average for this is the age of 52.”

It would also eliminate the requirement that the claimant must have 
suffered injury or illness from childhood sexual abuse. Any claims for 
damages suffered because of childhood sexual abuse that occurred on or 
after July 1984 would also be revived.

Chris Mann, a Democrat campaigning for Kansas Attorney General, said 
his time as a police officer and prosecutor taught him how daunting it 
can be for victims to come forward, especially if they are a child. With
 the statute of limitations in place, he said, the opportunity for many 
to seek justice is limited.

“We must not put an expiration date on justice. We must not put an 
expiration date on protecting our children from violent sexual 
predators,” Mann said. “This type of crime can rock a family to its core
 and rob survivors of their future. We cannot turn a blind eye just 
because it happened too far in the past.”

Another bill the group pushed for, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/measures/sb75/">Senate Bill 75</a>,
 would add duly ordained ministers to the list of positions required to 
report abuse and neglect of children. A minister who suspects abuse or 
neglect based on penitential communication would not be required to 
violate penitential privilege.

bill was one step in a long road to justice and accountability for the 
many survivors of clergy abuse.“How do I find the right words for describing what happened to me in 
church and school when I was 10 and 12 years old?” she said. “Words like
 ‘terrorized,’ ‘rape,’ ‘sexually abused’ or ‘violent sexual predator,’ 
and I believe the most important word is ‘silence’ — to be silenced and 
shamed by what happened, to be silenced and never to speak about what 
happened.”
