HARPER COUNTY — A man wanted for murder in Louisiana remains jailed in Kansas following his arrest in rural Barber County.

Douglas Thomas, 41, is a suspect in the October 4, shooting death of 26-year-old Demarcus Lewis whose body was found in a rural area near Mansfield Louisiana, according DeSoto Parish Sheriff Jayson Richardson.&nbsp;

On the evening of October 5, authorities spotted Lewis at a convenience store in Medicine Lodge, according to the Barber County Attorney's office. When law enforcement arrived, Lewis had left in a 2006 Lexus RX 330.

Numerous law enforcement agencies began a search for Lewis and the vehicle. After several hours, authorities found the vehicle in the 100 Block of West Petit in Medicine Lodge.

On Tuesday morning, Harper County deputies saw Thomas walking on highway near Attica, Kansas and took him in custody without incident, according to Harper County Undersheriff Kenny Hodson.

Thomas is being held on requested charges of second-degree murder, according to Richardson.&nbsp; Authorities have not confirmed when he will return to Louisiana to face charges.

Louisiana murder suspect remains in Kan. jail after manhunt

OSAGE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack and have a suspect in custody.

On Friday, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a local hospital regarding a patient who was receiving care from a battery that happened in Scranton, Kansas area, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

 An investigator was dispatched to the hospital to speak to the victim.

Just before noon Friday, a Scranton Police Officer observed the suspect identified as 37-year-old Tommy Lee Marshall driving around the community.

 Scranton Police Officers made contact with Marshall and detained him for investigators.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Marshall and transported to the Osage County Jail. He is being held on requested charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage, criminal restraint, and a Shawnee County Warrant. He is being held on a $750,000 bond, according to Wells.

Formal charges will be submitted to the Osage County Attorney’s Office.

Battery victim's statement at Kan. hospital leads to arrest

KANSAS CITY (AP) — The husband of a man who died after he tried to hang himself in a police holding cell in Kansas City has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners.

Police said Terry “TJ” Farmer was taken to a hospital twice while in police custody on suspicion of drunken driving. He was in a coma until he died on Dec. 31. His death was ruled a suicide.

His husband, Bradley Farmer, alleged in a federal wrongful death lawsuit that officers at the police station in northern Kansas City did not provide proper medical care for Terry Farmer, who they knew was suicidal.

Terry Farmer used a metal telephone cord to try and hang himself while he was in a holding cell. Video surveillance shows he hung on the cord for nearly 12 minutes before detention workers entered the holding cell.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina called Terry Farmer's death a tragedy but said police could not comment on the lawsuit.

Lawsuit filed over man's death after arrest in Kansas City

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have made an arrest.

Just before 12:30a.m. Thursday, police responded to a disturbance with a weapon call at a business in the 9400 block of East Harry in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a 20-year-old woman who reported meeting with Crawford Anderson, 20, Wichita, at the location. 

During the meeting, Anderson entered her car, pointed a handgun at her, and demanded property.

Anderson took the property and then fled from the vehicle on foot. No one was injured, according to Davidson.

Through the investigation, it was learned the preplanned meeting involved an illegal drug transaction, and Anderson was determined to be involved. Officers located him Thursday afternoon in the 9400 block of East Harry, and he was arrested without incident. He was booked on requested charges of aggravated robbery.

Some of the property taken in the robbery was recovered, according to Davidson.

Police: Kan. man robbed woman during drug deal

Kan. man charged for fatal stabbing after KHP chase

SALINA, Kan. – Law enforcement authorities are invesstigating the officer-involved shooting incident that occurred Friday in Salina.

According to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, both men who sustained injuries during the shooting were transported by EMS to the Salina Regional Health Center. Kalun Purucker, 29, of Topeka, Kan., died Friday at the hospital.

The other injured subject is a 20-year-old man from Lindsborg,&nbsp; remains hospitalized but is now stable with non-life threatening injuries, according to the KBI.

The KBI will not identify the second suspect unless, or until, he is arrested or charged with a crime related to this incident.

KBI: 1 suspect in officer-involved shooting in Salina died

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a double homicide in Manhattan and have made an arrest.

Just before 5:30p.m. approximately 5:23 pm, the Riley County Police Department Communications Center received a report of shots fired in the 700 block of Allison Avenue in Manhattan, according to police spokesperson Rachel Pate.

When officers and Riley County EMS arrived on scene, they found two adult male victims with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced deceased on scene.

The victims were identified as Skylar Havens, 19, and Javon Gray, 23, both of Manhattan, and they were known to the suspect.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Montrell Vassar, 19, of Manhattan on requested charges of second-degree murder., according to Pate. Vassar is confined in the Riley County Jail on a $500,000.00 bond. No other arrests are anticipated, according to Pate.

RCPD: 19-year-old arrested for double homicide 

SALINA– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), and the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) were involved in a shooting following a car stop Friday in Salina.

KBI agents were attempting to locate a male subject who was believed connected to a KBI case, and who had arrest warrants. They requested help from KHP troopers to locate the subject.&nbsp;

The man was observed getting into a vehicle that then left the area. Just before 4p.m., KBI agents and a KHP trooper initiated a car stop near Choctaw and Cherokee in Salina. The driver stopped, and as they approached the car, the law enforcement officers took gunfire from occupants in the vehicle. Two KBI agents and a KHP trooper returned gunfire hitting two male subjects.

Life saving measures were attempted at the scene. Both subjects were transported to area hospitals with critical injuries. No agents or troopers were injured in the incident.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was asked to investigate this incident.&nbsp;

As is standard practice, and in accordance with Kansas Highway Patrol policy, the trooper involved will be placed on administrative leave while this case is being investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Also, per KBI policy, the agents will be placed on administrative leave.

Update: 2 suspects wounded during KBI investigation in Salina

 Upon arrival, deputies located Kaylee M. Hogue, 30,&nbsp; of Topeka, asleep inside a 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander. During the investigation, it was determined that Hogue was under the influence, according to Hogue.

Deputies arrested Hogue and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested&nbsp; charges of possession of methamphetamine and opiate, distribution of a certain depressant, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence.

Sheriff: Kan. woman jailed after found asleep at gas pump

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the 2019 shooting death of a Kansas teen have made an arrest.

Just after 3p.m. November 12, 2019, police were dispatched to the 2400 Block of SE Maryland in Topeka about a possible shooting, according to&nbsp;Lieutenant Jerry Monasmith.

On arrival, officers located the 15-year-old Owen Hughes suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased by medical personnel on the scene.

On Thursday evening, the Topeka Police Department and Kansas Fugitive Apprehension Task Force arrested Darnell Tyree-Peppers, 23 of Topeka, and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of 1st Degree Murder, Attempted Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Burglary, according to Monasmith.

Larry Huggins III, 19, remains in custody in connection with the crime. Police arrested him after he showed up at a hospital&nbsp; with a gunshot wound, three hours after Hughes and 21-year-old Reginald McKinney Jr. were fatally shot. Witnesses told police that they saw people running from the area after the shooting.

Task Force helps arrest Kan. man wanted for 2019 fatal shooting 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A nine-months-pregnant Black woman whose arrest by a Kansas City police officer sparked outrage and an occupation of City Hall grounds was so overcome with emotion Thursday that she was unable to address a rally to demand police reform.

Deja Stallings ended up on the ground with an officer's knee in her back during the Sept. 30 arrest that was captured on video. Civil rights organizations and others have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-kansas-city-health-kansas-racial-injustice-02d510348e588646ec876a492b281809">camped out at City Hall since</a>&nbsp;and have vowed not to leave until the officers involved and Police Chief Rick Smith are fired.

The protesters also want the city to redirect 50% of the police department’s budget to social services supporting the Black community.

On Thursday, Stallings struggled to walk from the car to the steps of City Hall, where she was expected to address the crowd. When her time to speak arrived, she managed to get out only a few words before she started to cry and had to sit down.

Stallings lawyer, Stacy Shaw, read her statement, in which she described the physical pain and a bruise that endures on her back a week after the arrest.

“I cry every day because I am scared for my baby,” she said. “My baby girl has not even been born yet and she is a victim of police brutality. I am trying to stay strong but I know my baby is a fighter. She needs to be the last child who is a victim of the KCPD. She needs the demands of this occupation to be met.”

Shaw said doctors have checked the unborn baby, named Dsyre, and she appears to be healthy.

Stallings was issued a municipal citation for hindering arrest after police said she interfered when they tried to arrest a man, and that she was put on the ground to be handcuffed because she resisted arrest.

Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jean Peters-Baker is reviewing the arrest.

Police said in a statement Thursday that the officers involved remain on duty.

“We are reviewing the incident as well," spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina said, adding that police are cooperating with the prosecutors' investigation.

Civil rights groups have said for months that Smith should resign or be fired because his department is plagued by racism and does not investigate or respond to unnecessary force or fatal shootings of Black people by officers.

Smith has said repeatedly that he does not intend to resign but otherwise has made no statement since the arrest. Mayor Quinton Lucas has said he does not believe it is feasible to reduce the police budget by 50%.

“We have stated that we will occupy the seat of government, right here on this lawn, until our demands are met or we are forcibly and violently removed from the property,” Shaw said.

"And if we are violently removed, we'll be back the next day,” she said.

City Councilmen Brandon Ellington and Eric Bunch spoke in support of police reform and vowed to help the protesters achieve their goals.

Bunch said he would push the council to take the necessary action to “completely re-imagine what public safety means.”

He said the police department's $272 million budget this year is more than the combined budgets of several other departments, including parks, health, neighborhood services, indigent medical care and housing and homeless services. He noted that as the city continues to steer more money to police, violent crime and homicides keep increasing.

“We literally do not have the money to support the vital health care and quality of life issues precisely because we have resigned ourselves to a reality in which law enforcement is the only tool to address these complex issues," he said.

(AP) — A nine-months-pregnant Black woman whose arrest by a Kansas City police officer sparked outrage and an occupation of City Hall grounds was so overcome with emotion Thursday that she was unable to address a rally to demand police reform.Deja Stallings ended up on the ground with an officer's knee in her back during the Sept. 30 arrest that was captured on video. Civil rights organizations and others have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-kansas-city-health-kansas-racial-injustice-02d510348e588646ec876a492b281809">camped out at City Hall since</a>&nbsp;and have vowed not to leave until the officers involved and Police Chief Rick Smith are fired.<figure>

When her time to speak arrived, she managed to get out only a few words before she started to cry and had to sit down.Stallings lawyer, Stacy Shaw, read her statement, in which she described the physical pain and a bruise that endures on her back a week after the arrest.“I cry every day because I am scared for my baby,” she said. “My baby girl has not even been born yet and she is a victim of police brutality. I am trying to stay strong but I know my baby is a fighter. She needs to be the last child who is a victim of the KCPD. She needs the demands of this occupation to be met.”Shaw said doctors have checked the unborn baby, named Dsyre, and she appears to be healthy.<figure>

Jacob Becchina said, adding that police are cooperating with the prosecutors' investigation.Civil rights groups have said for months that Smith should resign or be fired because his department is plagued by racism and does not investigate or respond to unnecessary force or fatal shootings of Black people by officers.Smith has said repeatedly that he does not intend to resign but otherwise has made no statement since the arrest. Pregnant Kansas City woman arrested by police attends rally

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman was charged in connection to the weekend shooting of a Topeka man in his home, Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said Thursday.

Tishara Renee Moran, 27, is charged with felony first-degree murder and aggravated robbery linked to Saturday’s gunshot slaying of 28-year-old Christopher J. McMillon.

Police were called Saturday morning to McMillon’s home after a family member checking to see why he failed to appear at a youth basketball game&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shootings-topeka-6f82581c039302cfcde2ea8f4e08afe9">found him dead.</a>

Neighbors reported they had heard gunshots about 12:50 a.m. that day, Kagay said.

“The subsequent investigation led law enforcement to believe Moran was involved in the homicide,” he said.

Moran was arrested Monday and is being held in the Shawnee County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Officers arrived in the area and found that an altercation had taken place in the parking lot of a local business. Two subjects involved in the fight suffered what appeared to be non-life threatening gunshot wounds. EMS transported them to a local hospital.

A couple of hour later, police reported they located a third shooting victim who was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police arrested 20-year-old Jacob Reisinger and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Battery and Criminal Damage, according to Trimble.&nbsp; Police have not released names of the victims.

3 shot, Kan. man in custody after fight outside motel

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a home invasion robbery.

Just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a shooting call at a residence in the 800 block of South Fern in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers located a 59-year-old man with a gunshot wound.&nbsp; He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed two unknown suspects entered the residence, pointed handguns at the victim and a 20-year-old woman and demanded property.&nbsp; 

The suspect took property and shot 59-year-old, according to Davidson.&nbsp; The woman fled the home before officers arrived, according to Davidson.&nbsp;

Suspect shoots Kan. man during home-invasion robbery 

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest in Manhattan.

Just before 2p.m. Wednesday, a 25-year-old woman reported a suspect identified as Aaron Lewis, 25, Manhattan, kidnapped&nbsp; and injured her, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers arrested Lewis connection on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, violation of protection order, interference with Law enforcement officer, criminal trespass, aggravated intimidation of a witness/victim, and seven counts of failure to appear, according to the report. Lewis is being held on a bond of $63,750.00&nbsp;

He has previous convictions for burglary, criminal threat and domestic battery, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. He had been out of prison since July of 2019.

Just before 2a.m. Wednesday, sheriff's deputies responded to report&nbsp;of a single vehicle rollover accident in the 7200 block of NW U.S. 75 Highway, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 Upon arrival, deputies found two individuals trapped inside a&nbsp; 2007 Chevrolet Trail Blazer in the ditch. Soldier Township Fire Department assisted in extricating both occupants.

American Medical Response transported both occupants including a&nbsp;38-year-old female passenger to the University of Kansas Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, according to Christian.

During the investigation, deputies discovered that the driver, Christopher J. Clay, 42, of Topeka, had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Shawnee County. Clay, a convicted felon, was also in possession of a firearm. 

Clay is facing requested charges of driving under the influence (DUI), aggravated battery, driving while suspended and improper driving &nbsp;on a laned-roadway, failure to wear a seat belt and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Christian.

Police also arrested a 17-year-old boy from Topeka on requested charges of commercial sexual exploitation for transporting the victim.

Sheriff: Kansas man attempted to meet teen at motel 

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A registered Kansas sex offender was charged Tuesday with rape and kidnapping in connection with a September attack on a woman in Wichita, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 7 p.m. Sept. 22, police were dispatched to a sexual assault case in the 800 block of South Sylvan in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz.

Upon arrival, a 48-year-old female victim, told police she was walking in the area of Lincoln and Oliver when a suspect later identified as 34-year-old Darrius Johnson approached and grabbed her, forcing her into his Toyota Camry.

Johnson drove the victim to a separate location and sexually assaulted her. Johnson then drove the victim back to Lincoln and Oliver where she was released. Through the investigation and examination of evidence, Johnson was determined to have been involved in the attack. 

Police arrested Johnson October 1, in the 2100 block of South White Oak in Wichita without incident.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Johnson has a previous felony conviction in 2010 for attempted aggravated sexual battery where victim is overcome by force or fear, according to the KBI offender registry.

At the time of his arrest, Johnson was out on bond for a separate alleged sex crime, according to Cruz.

Johnson is being held on a&nbsp; bond of $350,000. Attorneys in the case will discuss it on October 22, according to the district attorney.

HUTCHINSON— A Kansas man arrested in January for a 2017 shooting and robbery waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered guilty pleas to lesser charges.

Maique Rodriguez-Faudoa was charged with attempted first degree murder in the May 2017 shooting of his uncle, Jesus Faudoa.&nbsp; Police found Faudoa shot multiple times at a home in the 700 block of E. 7th Avenue in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Rodriguez Faudoa then took the victim's cell phone and pickup

Despite his injuries Faudoa was able to recover.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, Rodriguez-Faudoa pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and robbery.&nbsp; &nbsp;Sentencing is set for November 4.

On Tuesday afternoon, detectives conducted&nbsp; a “buy/bust” operation, according to sheriff Brian Bellendir.

This is a type of drug sting in which an operative purchases drugs from a suspect with money which has had the serial numbers recorded. 

Once the transaction is made, the suspect is immediately arrested and taken into custody. Surveillance of both parties is conducted during the sting.

During the drug sting in the 500 Block of Frey Street, deputies arrested Frank Relmar Jr., 32 of Great Bend.

 Relmar was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Barton County Jail. He is currently being held on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. His bond is set at $50,000.&nbsp;

Sheriff busts Kansas felon during drug sting 

ELLIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a 3-county chase Tuesday.

Just before 4:30p.m. Tuesday, Ness County Sheriff's Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a white 2017 Chevy Cruz for a minor infraction at H Rd on K96 Highway in Ness County, according to a media release.

During the stop, K9 Kaia was deployed and indicated an odor of narcotics on several areas of the vehicle. As Deputies requested the female driver to exit the vehicle she fled from the stop and pursuit ensued. Ness County Emergency Management overheard the radio traffic and shut down vehicles at the K96/U283 Highway Junction in Ness City.

The vehicle was chased through Ness City, and Ness County into Rush County and continued north on 183 Hwy into Hays, Ellis County. 

The Pursuit encompassed approximately 75 miles at speeds exceeding 115 mph. Spike strips were deployed and were unsuccessful 4 times during the pursuit, and 1 successful deployment just inside the south city limits of Hays, Kansas. At one point the driver used her vehicle to swerve at law enforcement officers attempting to use spike strips to stop the pursuit. The pursuit was ended when Kansas Highway patrol performed a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) maneuver on the vehicle, in the 1900 block of Vine Street in Hays.

After a preliminary probable cause search of the vehicle, approximately 30 - 40 individual containers of THC, THC paraphernalia and other drug paraphernalia were located in the trunk and passenger area of the vehicle.

The vehicle is currently being held by Ness County Sheriffs Office for further investigation. The female driver was arrested on charges including: Felony Flee and Elude, Possession of Marijuana with the intent to distribute, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

No injuries to pursuing law enforcement, general public or suspect in this incident were reported, according to the release.

 </figure>ELLIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a 3-county chase Tuesday.Just before 4:30p.m. Tuesday, Ness County Sheriff's Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a white 2017 Chevy Cruz for a minor infraction at H Rd on K96 Highway in Ness County, according to a media release.During the stop, K9 Kaia was deployed and indicated an odor of narcotics on several areas of the vehicle. As Deputies requested the female driver to exit the vehicle she fled from the stop and pursuit ensued. Ness County Emergency Management overheard the radio traffic and shut down vehicles at the K96/U283 Highway Junction in Ness City.The vehicle was chased through Ness City, and Ness County into Rush County and continued north on 183 Hwy into Hays, Ellis County. The Pursuit encompassed approximately 75 miles at speeds exceeding 115 mph. Spike strips were deployed and were unsuccessful 4 times during the pursuit, and 1 successful deployment just inside the south city limits of Hays, Kansas. At one point the driver used her vehicle to swerve at law enforcement officers attempting to use spike strips to stop the pursuit. Suspect jailed after 3 county high-speed chase

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have two suspects in custody.

Just after 11:00 a.m. Friday, police were contacted by a 27-year-old man who reported unknown suspects stealing tools and other property from his pick-up truck on in the 12100 block of East Killenwood Court in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

The victim also reported that the stolen property was being sold on Facebook Marketplace.

Officers worked with the victim and located the suspects who were attempting to sell the property at a business near Pawnee and Meridian. 

Police arrested 37-year-old Todd Webber of Wichita on requested charges of burglary, theft, and possession of paraphernalia. They also arrested 31-year-old Richard Crouch of Wichita on requested charges of burglary, theft, and possession of methamphetamine.

Police were able to return the property to the owner.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Activists who were outraged when a white Kansas City police officer knelt on the back of a Black pregnant woman during an arrest last week have set up camp outside City Hall and say they plan to stay until the officer and police chief are fired.

They also want the city redirect 50% of the police department’s budget to social services aimed at the city’s Black community.

The unusual protest entered its fifth day Tuesday, with about 20 tents on the lawn and a well-organized “people’s city” that includes food, sanitation products, an arts area, a library of racial injustice-related books and private security.

Only 100 people are allowed on the site at once.“We’re at the seat of government and we’re having a social justice occupation that hasn’t been seen in Kansas City,” Shaw said. “People are excited that we are taking such drastic action and sticking to it. So we’re not just here for 15 minutes or a couple hours, that we are actually sticking to this and demanding justice.”The city currently has no plans to evict the campers, a spokeswoman for Mayor Quinton Lucas said. Other than a confrontation when police tried to evict them early Saturday when the tents were first set up, the protesters have not had any conflicts with police or city officials.The occupation was sparked by the arrest of Deja Stallings, 25, on Wednesday during a memorial event at an east Kansas City intersection that has been the scene of protests and civil rights actions for years. It drew attention after videos of the arrest circulated on social media.Police said officers were called to the scene by a business owner who reported a fight. They said Stallings, who is nine months pregnant, interfered when officers tried to arrest a man who refused to leave and she was put on the ground when she resisted arrest. She was issued a municipal summons for hindering an arrest.Ryan Sorrell, of Black Rainbow, said Stallings remains the central focus of the protests but activists also are tired of city officials not responding to complaints about how police treat the city’s Black community.“We’re not going to go anywhere,” Sorrell said. “They don’t want to arrest us. They don’t have the moral authority right now. They’re going to look bad if they do. This is an organized, peaceful, friendly community and they have no legal reason to remove us.”
