Kansas’s
 36th attorney general was infamous for popping out of trunks, inciting 
gunfights on buses, and going toe-to-toe with other lawmen and 
politicians. It was this unabashed, brash approach to law enforcement 
that earned Vern Miller the nickname "Lawman of the State."

“He 
was just kind of a cowboy who did things his way,” says Jim McLean, 
senior correspondent with KCUR’s Kansas News Service. “The narrative of 
the state of Kansas where you had these marshalls, sheriffs, of these 
Wild West communities, that would take matters in hand and clean up the 
town, right? Well, there's a certain amount of that to Vern Miller.”

But
 Vern Miller was not a Wild West sheriff. Miller wielded much of his 
power between the 1960s and the 70s, a socially and politically 
tumultuous time in Kansas and across the country.

Growing up in a hardscrabble community outside of Wichita, Miller worked at a dairy farm and got into a lot of fights as a kid.

“There was a lot of scrappin’ going on,” says Miller, now 91 and living in Phoenix. “Everybody scrapped at that age.”

After serving in Korea in the 1950s, Miller returned to become a road
 patrolman in the sheriff’s office. And he quickly became known for 
physical altercations.

One legend says that, as a traffic officer
 following a high-speed chase, Miller whipped a man in the face and 
dragged him through the car window.

As another story goes, Miller
 fought his boss — the sheriff — in the sheriff’s own home, ultimately 
costing him his job. In 1964, in a twist of irony, Miller won the race 
for sheriff of Sedgwick County, the state’s most populous county at the 
time.&nbsp;

Not shy about his new role, Miller traversed the county, 
busting folks for any and every possible infraction. He even went so far
 as to tell churches to suspend their cash bingo games.

“A lot of old ladies in town didn’t like that,” Miller remembers. “They like to play bingo.”

With
 a long history as a prohibition state, Kansas still had restrictive 
drinking laws at the time, which prevented the sale of liquor by the 
drink.

“Kansas for so long hadn’t had any laws enforced, along 
those areas,” Miller says. “I wanted them to know what the law was, and 
tell them they need to obey the law. And if they didn’t… then there’d be
 trouble about it.”

Besides bingo and drinking laws, Miller made 
headlines in the summer of 1968 for inciting a deadly gunfight on a bus 
in Wichita in order to nab two men suspected of murder in Missouri. And 
in 1967, he veered dangerously close to starting a mini-civil war in 
Kansas after making disparaging comments about officials in Leavenworth 
County. Miller was subpoenaed by the Leavenworth County prosecutor, who 
threatened to arrest him. In turn, Miller threatened to kill the men who
 came to arrest him. What resulted from that incident was the passing of
 Miller’s Law, which makes it illegal to resist an unlawful arrest.

Despite these controversies, or maybe because of them, Miller became a
 popular force during the social and political upheaval that dominated 
the 1960s, so much so that Democratic Gov. Bob Docking asked him to run 
as attorney general. It was Docking’s hope that Miller would turn out 
Democratic voters in populous Sedgwick County. Miller felt reluctant; a 
Democrat had not held the attorney general position in 80 years, and 
Miller had planned on going into private practice (he earned his law 
degree in Oklahoma by flying back-and-forth in a private plane).

“And I told ‘em, ‘I don’t know nothing about being attorney general,’” Miller recalls.

In 1970, he was elected attorney general of Kansas.

Traditionally,
 the attorney general is primarily concerned with managerial duties: 
ensuring that state laws are enforced through memos and deciding where 
to deploy investigative and prosecutorial resources. John Frieden, who 
was on his staff at the time, says Miller saw the job differently.

“The
 attorney general is the chief law enforcement officer in Kansas,” 
Frieden remembers Miller communicating. “And he was hands on.”

One of Miller’s campaign promises was to “land in the middle of the drug-ridden hippie commune at Lawrence with both feet."

Within
 his first few weeks in office, the newly-minted attorney general 
directed and personally executed raids at the University of Kansas in 
Lawrence.

Susan Hudgens, who now lives outside of Topeka, says 
she witnessed one of those raids when she cruised into Lawrence with her
 friends. They found themselves hanging out near one of the KU dorms 
when cars pulled up and Miller appeared.

“Sure enough, the trunk popped open and out comes this guy in a suit and a hat,” Hudgens says.

That was Miller with his signature move, and Hudgens remembered watching as he and his men converged on the dorm buildings.

“He
 acted more like the FBI guys chasing Bonnie and Clyde than a bureaucrat
 passing papers and writing reports, and that impression stuck,” Hudgens
 says.

Miller was especially keen on enforcing alcohol laws in Kansas. In 
the early 1970s, he made sure Greyhound and Trailways buses traveling 
through Kansas followed the state’s restrictions on selling liquor by 
the drink. And when Miller found out that Amtrak still sold liquor on 
trains passing through the state, Miller had a plan to enforce the law.

Here’s
 how he did it: An Amtrak train made a late-night stop in Newton, 
Kansas, Miller showed up, unannounced, and proceeded to storm the train 
with officers by his side. Together, they confiscated all of the alcohol
 on the train, threw the conductor in jail, and left the passengers 
stranded in Newton all night.

“So the train sat all night there in Newton, Kansas,” Miller says. “A little podunk town.”

The
 incident resulted in a lawsuit that Amtrak took all the way to the 
Supreme Court, which ruled that the Constitution gives states the power 
to regulate alcohol consumption.

Miller says lawyers for airline companies began asking how he would enforce the state’s alcohol laws on airplanes.

“And
 I said, ‘Well, fellas, I believe we’re under the same law and I believe
 you’re subject to it, so if you stop I won’t be raiding the plane,’” 
Miller recalls. “So they said, ‘Oh, it'll stop.’ So they stopped serving
 liquor over Kansas for a couple years.”

Although these actions 
drew ridicule from late-night talk show hosts, Miller’s popularity 
skyrocketed. In 1972, he won every county in Kansas during his 
reelection campaign. Two years later, as Kansas Gov. Bob Docking decided
 to run for U.S. Senate, Democrats looked to Miller to run for Governor.

“There
 was a poll run right before he ran for governor. In that particular 
poll, he had the support of 85% of people of Kansas.” says Democratic 
campaigner John Frieden. “I have never seen a poll that favorable to a 
candidate.”

Regardless of the polls, Miller lost the governor’s 
seat to Republican Robert Bennett by only 3,677 votes. And one place 
that came out against him was Douglas County, home of the “drug-ridden 
hippie commune” of Lawrence.

After leaving public office, Miller 
continued to practice law in Wichita, and eventually retired to Phoenix.
 Miller also received an honor from the Kansas Bar Association.

Meanwhile,
 Kansans voted in a referendum in 1986 to change the state constitution 
to allow liquor sales by the drink, paving the way for bars and 
restaurants to openly serve alcohol in the state.

Looking back at
 Miller’s legacy as a law enforcement officer, his aggression on the job
 would be scrutinized through a new lens: one that, in recent years, has
 become critical of police brutality and violence against civilians. 
That Miller largely sailed through his political career without much 
public criticism is perhaps more a reflection of the times than the man 
himself.

Still, John Frieden says it was Vern Miller’s pugnacious ways that led to his most lasting contribution to the state.

“And
 I think anybody who looks back at those times, the laws that he 
enforced that people were kind of uncomfortable with, they changed the 
laws,” Frieden says. “The laws were changed because of that and we came 
back into the 20th century.”

Meet the punch-throwing AG who inspired Kansas to open its saloons

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating the shooting death of a man in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Wichita and have identified the victim as&nbsp;35-year-old Laramie Miller of Wichita.

Just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to a shooting call at an apartment complex in the 7100 block of W. Shade Lane, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.&nbsp; Upon arrival, they located Laramie in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound.&nbsp; EMS transported Laramie to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police have developed several leads through eyewitness interviews and area surveillance video, and investigators are piecing to the case together. However, detectives are still requesting the community’s assistance.

Just before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, police an apartment complex in the 7100 block of W. Shade Lane, according to officer Paul Cruz. Police found a man in his 20s. with a gunshot wound to his upper body after a woman reported hearing a single gunshot and looking out her window to see a man on the ground.

EMS transported the man to a local hospital where he died.&nbsp; Police have not released his name or reported an arrest.

Police ID man who died after shooting at Kansas apartment complex

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects in connection with a carjacking and robbery.

Just after 9 p.m. March 7, police responded to a carjacking call at a home in the 1300 block of North Green in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; 

A 50-year-old woman who reported selling a green 2006 Ford Focus to 21-year-old Samantha Thompson.&nbsp; While speaking to Thompson about the sale, she saw Thompson’s boyfriend identified as 25-year-old Deandra Gilkey inside of her residence.

The victim confronted Gilkey who pulled out a handgun, pointed it at her, and took the keys to the Ford Focus.&nbsp; Both Gilkey and Thompson left in the vehicle.

Through the investigation, investigators learned of Thompson and Gilkey’s involvement in the incident.&nbsp; Through community tips, officers located Gilkey and Thompson Tuesday in the 200 block of South Hillside in Wichita.&nbsp; They were arrested without incident.&nbsp; Officers also recovered a handgun and illegal drugs. 

&nbsp;Gilkey is being held on bonds of $225,000 on requested charges of aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a felon, and an outstanding warrant through the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; 

Thompson is being held on a $75,000 bond on requested charges of aggravated robbery and possession of marijuana, according to online jail records.

In February, Gilkey had been reported as an absconder by the Kansas Department of Corrctions. He has previously been arrested and convicted of charges that include criminal damage to property, criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, attempt to flee and elude police, criminal threat, and domestic battery.&nbsp;

 </figure>The victim confronted Gilkey who pulled out a handgun, pointed it at her, and took the keys to the Ford Focus.&nbsp; Both Gilkey and Thompson left in the vehicle.Through the investigation, investigators learned of Thompson and Gilkey’s involvement in the incident.&nbsp; Through community tips, officers located Gilkey and Thompson Tuesday in the 200 block of South Hillside in Wichita.&nbsp; They were arrested without incident.&nbsp; Officers also recovered a handgun and illegal drugs. &nbsp;Gilkey is being held on bonds of $225,000 on requested charges of aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a felon, and an outstanding warrant through the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; Thompson is being held on a $75,000 bond on requested charges of aggravated robbery and possession of marijuana, according to online jail records.In February, Gilkey had been reported as an absconder by the Kansas Department of Corrctions. He has previously been arrested and convicted of charges that include criminal damage to property, criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, attempt to flee and elude police, criminal threat, and domestic battery.&nbsp;

Police: 2 jailed for alleged carjacking at Kansas home

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating after a body was found in a home following a standoff and fire in Salina.

Just after 9a.m. on Wednesday, a police observed a subject riding a bicycle on West Walnut Street near South Chicago Street in Salina, according to a social media report from police.

 This officer was aware that the subject had an active Saline County District Court felony burglary warrant for his arrest.

The officer attempted to make contact with the subject but he attempted to evade the officer while still on his bicycle. The officer was able to determine that the subject had run into a residence located at 133 S. Chicago. While officers were outside waiting for backup, several individuals exited the home and stated there was a white male inside who had a gun in his mouth. An individual who exited the home advised that he knew the subject who had burst into his home, and he also confirmed that the subject was in possession of a handgun.

Officers were also advised that there was a female inside and they did not know if she was there of her own free will.

Additional officers and deputies from Saline County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and the remaining occupants of this home were ordered to exit with no response.

At 10:06 a.m., the SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called out to attempt to resolve this incident involving a barricaded and armed suspect with a possible hostage.

Continuous efforts were made to communicate with the occupants via a PA system from a patrol vehicle.

At 11:30 a.m., a phone was delivered to the front porch by SWAT officers in an attempt to initiate communications. Over one hour of on-and-off communications occurred between the female and the negotiators and it became clear the female was not being held against her will.

This female advised on several occasions that the male, who she identified by name, was suicidal and had a handgun. She also said several times that he intended to burn the house down if law enforcement personnel tried to make entry.

The male refused to speak with negotiators and also refused to exit the residence per conversations with the female. At no time during the incident did police negotiators speak with the male.

At 12:44 p.m., the female, identified as Danielle Reed of Salina, agreed to exit the residence. She confirmed that the male was the only subject left inside and he did have a handgun. This female was taken into custody for an outstanding District Court felony warrant for a probation violation. Additional charges regarding her actions at this scene are under consideration.

At 12:57 p.m., SWAT officers injected four rounds of CS cold gas into the back of the residence in an effort to have the subject exit. This gas is delivered in a micro-powder form which is not considered flammable as it does not create heat. No officers attempted entry to this home during this standoff.

Approximately two minutes later, a white male was observed in the front portion of the home and within minutes, it was clear there was a fire in the same front portion. Shortly thereafter, officers heard several gun shots from inside the rear of the home.

The Salina Fire Department arrived on scene at 1:04 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire. A deceased subject was found in the rear portion of the home.

At the time of this release, the Kansas State Fire Marshal was en route to the scene to investigate the origin of the fire.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death for the individual found in the home. The identity of the deceased subject is not being released pending next of kin notification.

The Salina Police Department noted that it appreciated the assistance of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and the Salina Fire Department during this incident.

As this is an ongoing investigation, any further inquiries should be directed to the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Salina Fire Department information noted.

Police: 1 dead after standoff, fire at home in Salina

BARTON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have made an arrest..

Just before 11p.m.&nbsp; Tuesday, police&nbsp; were dispatched to the 5600 block of 10th Street in Great Bend in reference to a shooting, according to a media release.

Officers located Richard Fletcher Jr.,23, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

EMS transported him to the hospital in Great Bend and he was later flown to Wichita with critical injuries, according to the release.

Investigators have identified two persons of interest in the case. These people are identified as Ismael Montelongo, 20, and Noah Holden, 19.

On Wendsesday, offices responded to an address in the 1500 block of Hubbard in Great Bend, after receiving information of a possible location where Montelongo and Holden were hiding. 

Ismael Montelongo, Noah Holden, and a juvenile male suspect were arrested without incident. Ismael Montelongo, Noah Holden and the juvenile male suspect were all transported the Barton County Detention Center and booked in lieu of bond. The juvenile male was then released to the custody of Juvenile Services.

The suspects are being held on requested charges of&nbsp;Attempted Murder in the 2nd Degree, Endangerment, Criminal Carrying of a Weapon, Interference with Law Enforcement

UPDATE: Suspects in Great Bend shooting investigation in custody

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)— Two bank robbery suspects are in custody after leading police on a chase through parts of the Kansas City area that reached up to 110 mph.

Police spotted the suspects' black SUV and a chase began along Interstate 435 through Kansas City, Missouri, and into Kansas, where at one point the SUV reportedly reached speeds of about 110 mph. The suspects abandoned the SUV and ran into a neighborhood before Overland Park, Kansas, officers arrested them.

Dickinson County authorities located an armed robbery suspect for Saline County in Solomon on March 5th. According to Dickinson County Sheriff Gareth Hoffman his department's Drug Enforcement Unit located Dvonte Johnson who had been suspected of committing an armed robbery in Saline County hours prior to be located.

Hoffman said the Drug Enforcement Unit aided in the arrest of Johnson and then subsequently applied for and was granted a search warrant to a house known to have been used by Johnson for both drug activity and stolen property.

A house at 216 East 6th Street in Solomon was searched by the Drug Enforcement Unit in conjunction with the Saline County Sheriff's Department. Various items were seized including drugs, drug paraphernalia and firearms.

Hoffman said the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department is requesting charges of Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Controlled Substance, Possession of Controlled Substances and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The investigation is ongoing and other arrests are possible.

RILEY COUNTY —A man listed on the Kansas Public Offender registry for two drug crimes including heroin distribution has been arrested for an alleged child sex crime in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Police arrested Miles Loren Martin, 60, Manhattan, on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and Sexual exploitation of child, according to a report from Riley County Police Department. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

He was in custody Monday for an alleged burglary and theft.&nbsp; The sex crime is alleged to have occurred Monday, according to the RCPD.

Due to the nature of the crime that involves a minor, police are not releasing additional details.

Registered offender jailed for alleged child sex crime in Manhattan

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges after a weekend traffic stop.

Just after 11p.m. Saturday, a sheriff’s deputy  stopped a 2005 Infiniti for an alleged equipment violation near 134th and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Deputies arrested the driver, Ryan Michael Fidler, 36, of Topeka for driving while revoked and driving while a habitual violator. He has previous convictions for arson, forgery and theft, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The passenger, Samantha Louise Townsend, 36, of Topeka was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Both subjects were booked into the Jackson County Jail.

Just before 5p.m. Monday. officers filed a report for aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, aggravated child endangerment, criminal damage to property and criminal restraint in East Manhattan, according the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 29-year-old male victim of a stabbing was transported to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries. 

Police arrested Arayah Perez, 21, of Manhattan in connection with the alleged crime on requested charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, aggravated endangering a child and criminal restraint. Perez is being held on a bond of $20,000.00.

RCPD: 21-year-old Manhattan woman jailed for alleged stabbing

JACKSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Florida woman on numerous charges after a high-speed chase in Kansas.

Just after 5p.m. Friday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a person in Brown County near the Sac and Fox Casino reporting a south bound dark colored SUV driving reckless and passing vehicles on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 75, according to sheriff Tim Morse.

The sheriff's office receive more calls reporting the vehicle was driving at excessive speeds and passing vehicles on the shoulder. 

A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy located the Jeep Cherokee bearing Florida tags north of Jackson Heights on U.S 75 Highway and attempted to stop the vehicle near 262nd Road when a vehicle pursuit ensued.&nbsp; The Jeep continued southbound on through the City of Holton.&nbsp;

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle by deploying Stop Sticks without success south of Holton. 

The vehicle continued into Shawnee County where further attempts were made by other agencies to stop the vehicle with tire deflation devices without success. 

The Jeep continued south across the Kansas River and into the City of Topeka. 

Shawnee County Sheriff’s deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper assisted in the pursuit. The driver identified as&nbsp;Engy Arthur Kerr, 23, of South Daytona, Florida stopped the vehicle at 10th and Warren Street and surrendered to law enforcement. 

Kerr was transported to the Jackson County Jail where she is being held on felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and numerous traffic offenses. In addition three dogs were removed from the vehicle without injury, according to Morse.

Just before 5p.m. Sunday, police responded to the 1100 block of SE Locust in Topeka on a report of a shooting, according to police Lt. John Trimble.&nbsp;

Officers were able to find a victim identified as&nbsp;Khalil I. Austin, 22, Topeka.  at a nearby location suffering from what appeared to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound. EMS transported him to a local hospital for medical treatment.

On Monday morning, police reported the arrest of a suspect identified as 18-year-old Shardell S. Jackson of Topeka on requested charges of&nbsp; Aggravated Battery, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Discharge of a Firearm and Criminal Damage to Property.

Police: Kansas teen in custody for weekend shooting 

BARTON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on numerous charges after a weekend drug bust.

Just after 5 p.m. Saturday, deputies executed a search warrant at 609 E. Third in the city of Hoisington, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Kansas man held on $100,000 bond after weekend drug bust

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after a 2-county chase.

Just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, a patrol officer observed a gray 2015 Honda Civic driving without tail lights in the 200 block of North Broadway Boulevard in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to stop and sped southbound and led police on a chase through the south part of Salina before getting on southbound Interstate 135.

&nbsp;Saline County Sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers took over the chase. The vehicle eventually stopped because troopers put out spike strips in McPherson County.

The driver, Mason Barnes, 19, Salina, was arrested on requested charges of felony flee and elude, no drivers license and multiple other traffic violations.

KHP uses stop sticks to help arrest Kansas teen during weekend chase

HUTCHINSON— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on numerous charges after a weekend drug bust.

Just after 1:30a.m. Saturday, the Hutchinson Police Special Operation Unit served a search warrant in the 800 block of Lincoln in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

Officers seized over two ounces of cocaine, just under a pound of marijuana, sixteen units of ecstasy, hundred and nine units of amphetamine, two counts of marijuana wax, drug paraphernalia, over $2,200 in cash, and four firearms.

Twenty-one year old Joshua L. Just after 9:00 a.m. March 5, officers executed a search warrant at at home in the 1300 block of Menor Street in Winfield, according to a media release.

At the scene, police collected evidence&nbsp; to facilitate the arrest of a suspect who is believed to have orchestrated the February 18, robbery at Graves Drug Store, 905 Main Street.&nbsp; The robbery in the early afternoon hours prompted the lockdown of schools. Police described the suspect as wearing a black hoodie and orange mask who was considered armed and dangerous.

Steven Eugene Anstaett, 38, is being held in the Cowley County Jail on requested charges of robbery and is expected to make a court appearance this week.

Suspect remains jailed for alleged Kansas drug store robbery

WICHITA- A Kansas a man was sentenced Friday to 30 months in federal prison for bank robbery, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Jeremy Vos, 21, Wichita, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. In his plea, he admitted that on July 23, 2019, he robbed Intrust Bank at 5500 E. Harry. He gave the teller a handwritten note saying, "This is a robbery. No (dye) bags. I have a gun." Police arrested Vos the same day as the robbery.

Wichita police reported Vos had made a false report to 911 shortly before the robbery.

21-year-old going to prison for Kansas bank robbery

TOPEKA, KAN. – A federal grand jury indicted a Kansas man March 5 on charges of drug trafficking, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Dustin Schultz-Bergin, 40, Olathe, Kan., is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to documents filed in federal court, on Jan. 23, 2020, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers attempted to arrest Schultz-Bergin at Matfield Green service area on the Kansas Turnpike. 

He fled in a Nissan Altima and troopers stopped the car about 10 miles north of the service area. Schultz-Bergin was armed and troopers shot at him after he got out of the car and ran into a field. Troopers stopped him with the help of a police dog.

The Drug Enforcement Administration recovered more than 7 pounds of methamphetamine from the car and a .380-caliber handgun.

If convicted, he could face not less than 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $10 million on the methamphetamine charge and up to 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the firearm charge.&nbsp;

Man faces $10M fine, prison after chase on Kansas turnpike

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital and have made an arrest.

Just before noon on March 1, police responded to a shooting call at a residence in the 2900 block of East Timberlane in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers contacted a 53-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound to his body.&nbsp; He was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Through the investigation, it was learned that a disturbance occurred inside the home between the 53-year-old victim, a 26-year-old man, and a suspect identified as 21-year-old Deamonte Reese.&nbsp; 

Reese and his 22-year-old girlfriend, the victim's neice, left the residence but returned a short time later.&nbsp; A second disturbance occurred between the 53-year-old, the 26-year-old and Reese.&nbsp; During this disturbance, Reese pulled out a handgun and fired one shot that struck the 53-year-old man, according to Davidson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reese then fled the scene with his girlfriend in a green Kia Sportage.

Police located Reese Thursday&nbsp; in the 8300 block of East Kellogg, and he was arrested without incident on a requested charge of aggravated battery and an outstanding warrant and a parolee violation through the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; He is being held on total bonds of $130,000, according to online jail records.

&nbsp;He had a previous conviction on a charge of criminal possession of a firearm, according to Davidson.

Just after 7 a.m. Friday, the Shawnee County EmergencyCommunications Center received a call regarding a motor vehicle in the water near the south boat ramp at Lake Shawnee, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.
