The event will be at the High School in the Event Center Parking Lot at 1100 Blue Jay Way. Registration for the car show is 8:00-11:00 a.m that morning. Registration can be paid ahead of time online for $16 or in person at the gate for $20. The Geary County Senior Center announced they will be hosting a Community Health Fair on Wednesday, April 2. The Health Fair will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m., at the Senior Center located at 1025 S. Spring Valley Rd in Junction City.&nbsp;

At the Hampton Inn on March 26, the JC Breakfast Optimist Club members had guests Judy Sanner and Renee Schmedemann share their stories about growing up in a German culture. Even though the two had not met prior to the meeting there were many common experiences they told.

Both of their mothers were born and reared in Germany. Each married a U.S. Army soldiers. Celebrations of American holidays were “big deals” in both households. German was spoken in each of their homes.

However, Judy admitted to being “stubborn and did not want to be different from her English-speaking friends. When mom spoke to me in German, I would not answer back in German.” Her ability to speak German in sentences is limited.

Renee stated that she learned the language and continues to speak it with her brother, other family members and friends. Since both of their mothers came from different parts of Germany, each had a different dialect.

Judy shared that this is true with students in her English Learners classes at Junction City High School “who speak Spanish, but students from different countries and/or locations within a country have a different dialect and, in some cases, cannot understand each other.”

Renee worked as an OMS Assistant at Fort Riley and recently retired from her work. She said “Some of my Spanish speaking co-workers wanted to learn German words and we exchanged. I would teach them a German word and they would teach me the Spanish equivalent.”

Renee told club members that she still prepares German meals she was taught by her mother. Some of the dishes include kartoffelknodel, which are potato balls or dumplings; streusel kuchen, a coffee cake; jager sauce, which is the sauce to pour onto schnitzel for example; schnitzel is made with veal or pork tenderloin; spatzle or egg noodles and rouladen made with thinly sliced beef. She said that her husband, “Marty, is the baker in the family. He bakes the brotchen, which are like Kaiser rolls, to go with some of our meals.”

Both agreed that the diversity of cultures in Junction City is what attracted their parents to live here. “This is a welcoming community” and both are glad they chose to live here.

Friends Night at Blu's Restaurant will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 2 from 5:30 - 7 :30 p.m. The year in review for the Friends of the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library will be celebrated and funds will be raised to support the library.

Blu will donate 20% of all the participant's food and beverage purchases from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to Friends of the Library. This will increase their budget for supporting library programs and contribute to the library expansion / renovation project.

The Junction City Fire Department will be continuing the process of hydrant testing starting March 31 during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday. Fire Chief Jason lankas said that the City hydrants will be tested to ensure they're operable and able to produce the required water pressure when needed to supply water for firefighting purposes.

Because this testing must be done during normal operating hours, it is impossible to know in advance just where or when exactly the testing will take place in any specific area.

Opening hydrants can sometimes cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes. The discoloration is not harmful in any way and can be cleared up by running the water for a few minutes.

This kind of testing not only ensures the protection of Junction City residents, it's also an evaluation indicator used by the Insurance Services Organization which rates cities according to the fire protection they offer. The recent Insurance Services Organization rating resulted in the elevation of the City of Junction City to a Class 3 protection rating. By maintaining a system of checks and maintenance on the City’s fire protection assets, the department is working to maintain and potentially lower the overall Insurance Services Organization’s current rating.&nbsp;

The following areas are where this year’s testing of hydrants will be:

1st concentration – Zone 211 300 block of W. 7th to I-70 and Madison to Reynolds

2nd concentration – Zone 208 Buffalo Solider Dr. to 8th St. and Madison to Grant Ave.

3rd concentration – Zone 204 Grant Ave. to the Fort Riley Gate

For families who choose to remain in the Fort Riley area during their soldier's deployments Rone noted that there are family support groups and others available to help them.

The annual Earth Day clean up called "Operation Clean Sweep" will be held Saturday, April 12 in Junction City.

Kansas wheat growers know that success starts with strong, resilient varieties. Few understand this better than Dr. Guorong Zhang, a wheat breeder at Kansas State University's Agricultural Research Center in Hays. In a recent episode of the Wheat’s On Your Mind podcast, Zhang discussed his breeding philosophy, career path, and the future of wheat development in Kansas.

Zhang’s journey began on a small farm in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, where his family farmed rice and jute on less than an acre. After studying at Zhejiang Agriculture University, he spent time in barley research before coming to the U.S. for a Ph.D. in plant breeding at North Dakota State. That experience led him through research roles in soybean and biofuel crops, and eventually to K-State in 2012, where he took over the Hays breeding program.

“At the beginning, yield was my main focus,” Zhang said. “Farmers need high-yielding varieties to be profitable. Over time, I added more objectives—disease resistance, drought tolerance, and quality.”

His program has produced widely adopted varieties including Joe, KS Dallas, and KS Bill Snyder. Named in honor of the Hall of Fame football coach, the Snyder variety gained attention for its strong yield potential and broad adaptability. Zhang continues refining its drought tolerance as part of ongoing improvements.

Kansas weather has created some of Zhang’s toughest hurdles. In 2021, a hailstorm destroyed up to 80% of his trial plots in Hays, setting the program back significantly. These experiences have reinforced his focus on resilience in both environmental and disease-related stress.

“We’re getting better data, faster,” Zhang said, referencing the integration of double haploid breeding and drone phenotyping into his program. “The goal is to develop varieties that can handle both environmental stress and disease pressure.”

Field testing takes place across eight locations in western Kansas, including five farmer-managed sites. These trials give Zhang’s team insight into how lines perform under real-world growing conditions. He values the feedback received during field days and uses it to refine breeding goals for future releases.

“The western Kansas variety has strong resistance to Triticum mosaic virus and wheat streak mosaic virus, as well as improved drought tolerance,” Zhang said of two new releases expected this year. “The central Kansas variety has exceptional yield potential and strong disease resistance.”

His breeding program also includes collaborative work with universities like Colorado State to tackle new threats like wheat stem sawfly. Together, they evaluate new lines and share research data to speed up resistance development for high-risk regions.

Even as technology and challenges evolve, Zhang stays grounded in the basics: better yield, better disease resistance, and better quality. “We want Kansas farmers to have access to the best possible wheat varieties,” he said.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas couple on multiple allegations after a traffic stop arrest.

Just before 12:30a.m. Tuesday, a sheriff's deputy&nbsp;initiated a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle for excessive speed and equipment violations in the vicinity of Kansas 4 highway and Wakarusa Road just north of Eskridge in Wabaunsee County, according to the sheriff's department.&nbsp;

Two sheriff's department officials made contact with the vehicle occupants and their subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of the driver, identified as 33-year-old Colter Weeks of Louisville, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was taken into custody on scene without incident on requested charges of driving while suspended, possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant (two counts); Methamphetamine and HCL base crack cocaine.

The passenger, identified as 34-year-old Jerah Weeks of Louisville, Kansas&nbsp; was arrested on requested charges of possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant (two counts); Methamphetamine &amp; HCL base crack cocaine and for unlawfully obtaining prescription drugs.

Colter Weeks has a previous felony conviction for battery on a city or county corrections officer, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Geary County Historical Society Executive Director

The Geary County Historical Society will host their third annual History Alive reenactment event from 10am-4pm on Saturday, April 26th at the Spring Valley Historic Site. Visitors will be invited to step back in time and meet reenactors depicting life in the late 19th&nbsp;century.

Visitors to the site will be able to imagine life in the past through presentations and hands-on demonstrations, while also exploring the authentic log cabins and one-room schoolhouse on the Spring Valley Historic Site. Skilled tradesmen demonstrating flint knapping, hide tanning, and more will have pieces for sale.

Spring Valley Historic Site is a registered historic site located at 721 N. Spring Valley Road, Junction City and features two authentic 1850s log cabins and the original one-room schoolhouse used by children in the area from 1871 to 1958.

Light concessions will be available for sale, and a suggested $2 per person cash donation will be taken at the gate. All proceeds from the event help support the upkeep of the historic site. There have not been any measles cases reported in Geary County. But 23 cases have beeen reported in southwest Kansas and others farther south in Oklahoma and Texas.

Geary County Health Department Director Charles Martinez is working to educate the public on this subject.

This memorandum provides a situational overview of the current measles threat in Kansas, with specific implications for Geary County, and outlines public health actions necessary to mitigate potential local transmission.

Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, has seen a sharp resurgence across several U.S. states. As of March 2025, over 300 confirmed cases have been documented in Texas, with additional outbreaks spreading into New Mexico and Oklahoma. Recently, 10 confirmed cases have been identified in southwest Kansas, increasing the likelihood of intra-state spread.

Measles is transmitted through respiratory droplets and can remain airborne for up to two hours after an infected individual exits the area. With a basic reproduction number (R₀) of 12–18, it is among the most transmissible infectious agents known.

Geary County currently maintains an MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination rate of approximately 75%, well below the 93.3% threshold required for herd immunity, as established by CDC and WHO guidelines. This places the local population, particularly young children, immunocompromised individuals, and those medically ineligible for vaccination—at elevated risk.

Complications from measles can be severe and include pneumonia, encephalitis, permanent hearing loss,and death. National surveillance data indicate that approximately 1 in 5 infected individuals require hospitalization (CDC, 2024).

The MMR vaccine is 97% effective after two doses and carries an excellent safety profile. To reduce local risk, the Geary County Public Health Department is mobilizing resources for expanded vaccination clinics, mobile outreach, and community education initiatives.

We urge all residents to verify their MMR vaccination status and take appropriate action. Individuals unsure of their immunization records should consult their primary care provider or contact the health department directly.

In light of the current risk indicators, the following immediate actions are recommended:

• Check your vaccination status. Ensure that you and your children have received two doses of the MMR vaccine. Individuals born before 1957 are generally presumed immune, but others should verify their records.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Warmer days may lead many to itch for spring and summer, but a Kansas State University entomologist cautions against a small mite that is likely to give you a less-pleasing seasonal itch.

Chiggers are active beginning in April, says K-State’s Raymond Cloyd, and are usually found in areas with unmanaged vegetation, as well as parks, golf courses, sports fields and other grassy areas. The larvae attach themselves to humans, pets and other animals.

“Chiggers do not suck blood,” Cloyd said. “Rather, chiggers burrow and feed on dissolved skin. The larvae inject a saliva that causes the skin tissue to dissolve, and that is what the chigger larvae feed on.”

According to Cloyd, the larvae are difficult to see with the human eye. Humans often notice the presence of chiggers by a reddish-rash and itchy skin.

Cloyd cautions humans to resist the urge to scratch.

“You want to avoid scratching too often because you can promote a bacterial infection by opening wounds,” he said. “I’ve been bitten by chiggers many times, and I know it’s very tempting to scratch, but you don’t want to create a bigger problem.”

Cloyd said some topical ointments may help with the itch and a dermatologist may be able to provide recommendations.

Once attached, larvae feed for “a few days,” according to Cloyd, and then they fall off the host. The larvae become nymphs and then adults that reside in the soil. The nymphs and adults do not feed on humans or other animals. Instead, they feed on insects, mites, and their eggs in the soil.

The best advice, according to Cloyd, is to avoid getting bit in the first place.

“If you’re going to go into an area where chiggers are likely to be, use DEET or other repellants, and then when you come back inside, immediately take a shower to help reduce the itchiness caused by chiggers,” he said.

Chiggers are usually active from Spring (late April) until Fall, or until the first frost. The species of chiggers found in Kansas do not transmit disease, Cloyd said.

Chiggers in Kansas: K-State entomologist shares tips to avoid the itch

Kassidy Jahnke, daughter&nbsp;of Eric and Kristel Jahnke, is a junior at St. Xavier's High School and was selected as the JC Breakfast Optimist Club's Student of the Quarter from St. Xavier Catholic Schools in Junction City.&nbsp;

The Kansas Corporation Commission says the Cold Weather Rule ends on Monday, March 31. The Cold Weather Rule protects residential customers, served by KCC regulated utilities, from disconnection when temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees.

In addition, Monday is the deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, known as LIEAP. Applications for the federally funded program must be received by the Kansas Department of Children and Families by 5 p.m. on Monday.&nbsp;

When the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, regulated utilities are required to offer a 12-month payment plan upon request, even if a previous payment plan has been broken. When that protection ends on Monday, failure to make arrangements or failure to adhere to an already established payment plan could result in disconnection. Reconnection after March 31 may require past due balances be paid in full, depending on the utility's policy. That is why it is important to call now – while regulated utilities are still required to offer the Cold Weather Rule 12-month payment plan.

There was a noticeable drop in bad behavior during the recent Fake Patty's Day celebrations in Manhattan. That was a message from RCPD Director Brian Peete to the Manhattan City Commission.

He did report that there were 503 calls for service which was above the five year average of 435. Citations were at about the five year average. Transporting an open container was the most cited.&nbsp;&nbsp;One approach adopted by authorities involved keeping people moving.

Geary county Free Fair dates have been released by the Extension Office. Primary dates are July 21st to the 24th beginning with the arrival of 4-H livestock to the weigh-in of 4-H Market Beef, Goats and Sheep on the 21st.

Other highlights will include the 4-H Food Sale all day on the 22nd and the Beef Show at 7 p.m. on the 22nd, the Swine show at 7 p.m. on the 23rd, and the 4-H Project Auction and Livestock Auction at 6:30 p.m.on the 24th.

The annual 4-H Barbecue and Watermelon Feed is also scheduled from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on the 24th.

Other Fair related activities will include the 4-H Public Revue and the Royalty announcement at 7 p.m. on July 17th, and the 4-H Horse Show at 6 p.m. July 20th.
